i watched the espn dvd the top 10 heavyweights of all time recently. i was very very amazed at the fight footage on this one. some of them go all the way back to 1908...CLASSICS! Bert Sugar named Joe Louis as the #1 of all time.
i saw the 13th round ko by marciano against walcott. OUCH!!!
this was voted by espn as the number 1 ko of all time.
i highly recommend this dvd for any boxing fan!

sorry but ali was the greatest boxer ever

i can kind of see why somebody would say that.
but on the other hand I think that the 12 year consecutive reign of Louis as undisputed champion gives him the edge in this one.
too bad Ali and Louis could not have fought!!!
now that would have been a fight for the ages!

i watched the Long Count fight yesterday... it seems Dempsey forgot the rule of going to a neutral corner.
I read in his previous fights he had the habit of standing over his fallen opponents... too bad for him! probably cost him the championship.
i was amazed to see that there were 120,000 people there!
i think maybe because boxing is in the shape its in now is the reason there are no really huge crowds like this anymore

Ali was the greatest Heavyweight in my lifetime. I can't judge any of the fighters before I was born.

i think showmanship wise ali maybe had an advantage.
my personal favorites while i was growing up were foreman, lennox lewis, and holyfield, as well as tyson.
i haven't really watched boxing since the lewis-holyfield fight over 10 years ago that was fixed...
i have a real fascination with the historic fights, especially from MSG.
I like the atmosphere the fights seemed to generate back then, the way the microphone was lowered into the ring, and even the way the announcer would introduce the fights and announce the winner.
i think its important that people learn to appreciate the greats of the past, because they really were that: GREAT!
plus fights like Louis-Schmeling I and II. the Nazis were touting the supremacy of the Aryan race after Schmeling ko'ed Louis in their first fight.
then Louis won the second fight and the Nazis were very upset.
they then sent Schmeling to the front lines in Crete!

i remember reading that Jack Johnson and Jess Willard, in their 1915 title fight in Havana were scheduled for 40+ 3-minute rounds! Johnson lasted until the 26th when he was supposedly "knocked out".
