I was just thinking about all the characters on this show. Everyone was single when they started at the mansion:

1) Benson (who was engaged to Senator Hartford in the last season. Whether they ever did marry or not we'll never know.)
2) Marcy (eventually married Dan but until then she was always complaining about not finding the right man.)
3) Taylor (who'd want to marry him? )
4) Clayton (see Taylor  ) Actually, Clayton was supposed to marry that Russian girl but that didn't work out.
5) Denise (came on the show single, then married Pete.)
6) Pete (came on the show divorced, then married Denise.)
7) Kraus (she was the perennial spinster on the show....never did marry Arnold and she was getting dumped all the time.)
8) Governor Gatling (he was actually a widower when the show started but strange he never hooked up with anyone during the show's run. He got dumped too.)

And Katie doesn't really count in this case because she was just a kid so of course she would be single.

I just mentioned this because it seems a little unusual now that I'm thinking about it. That many adults on one show all having serious relationship issues.

No, I wouldn't want to marry Taylor (although he was a very good dancer!) - didn't he have a thing for that lady with pink lip gloss? She ended up being instrumental in the bugging of the mansion.

They should've ended up calling the mansion the Lonely Hearts Club.

Yeah, Taylor got dumped by that woman...she was just using him.

Good name for the mansion! :D

Interesting thought, BensonFan!

1) Benson (who was engaged to Senator Hartford in the last season. Whether they ever did marry or not we'll never know.)
***
I couldn’t stand Sen. Hartford. And frankly, I can’t really see them lasting unless there was some give. They were both strong personalities and they would really have had to work at it, especially being in the public/political field.

2) Marcy (eventually married Dan but until then she was always complaining about not finding the right man.)
***
I just hope she stopped complaining, having found Sam, I mean, Dan. I am not fond of her, but basically she’s OK and I wish her well.

3) Taylor (who'd want to marry him? )
***
Hmm, I can’t imagine either, but I’ve seen odder couples out there. There’s *has* to be someone!

4) Clayton (see Taylor ) Actually, Clayton was supposed to marry that Russian girl but that didn't work out.
***
I knew about Svetlana, but didn’t know any follow-up on that relationship. Was that mentioned in another episode?

5) Denise (came on the show single, then married Pete.)
***
I liked them being married. I think they were good for each other. Love them both and missed them when they left.

6) Pete (came on the show divorced, then married Denise.)
***
Actually he was in the middle of the divorce proceedings, wasn’t he?

7) Kraus (she was the perennial spinster on the show....never did marry Arnold and she was getting dumped all the time.)
***
Yeah, she fell for a couple of losers, especially that married scum ball. But there she dumped *him*!

8) Governor Gatling (he was actually a widower when the show started but strange he never hooked up with anyone during the show's run. He got dumped too.)
***
Well, he dated the telephone tech for a bit, but I think Rose was the only who ever came close. Still, with that ring on his finger, I wonder if he was really looking. He waited long for Olivia, and it didn’t seem as if the marriage lasted very long, sadly. Maybe he couldn’t quite move on from her.

And Katie doesn't really count in this case because she was just a kid so of course she would be single.
***
But the future was scary! Marrying that football player, and getting a quick divorce! No!

1) I didn't like Senator Hartford either. Benson got "trapped" into that one in a sense. But it's not like he backed out either after he found out about the misunderstanding, so whatever!

Here's what I thought was strange about Benson: why is it that he was so in a hurry to marry Francine in Season 1 but then in Season 3 (ish) he was avoiding the marriage topic with Jennifer? He said to the Governor, "I'm not ready for marriage!" Apparently he just wasn't ready to marry HER. I also thought to myself, not ready for marriage? Jeez, you're about 50, when do you think you WILL be ready?

2) With Clayton, we can assume the thing with "Sveddy" didn't work out because in one of the very last episodes we find out he's been going to that trendy nightclub trying to pick up women. Sveddy was never even mentioned again (as far as I can remember) after Clayton was appointed Budget Director.

3) I liked Pete and Denise as a couple too, and I was also sorry to see them go. They added a nice dimension to the show that was lacking after they left. And you're right; I think Pete was in the middle of his divorce proceedings.

4) You're right; Kraus was the DUMPER once, rather than always being the DUMPEE.

5) With the Governor, I wonder what happened to Betty (the telephone repair lady). They were really tight for one whole episode and then she's gone with no explanation. He fell too soon for Rose and the way she led him on really ticked me off. She didn't deserve him anyway. And I thought she was nuts; he was adorable (and ironically, she used that same word to describe him yet she still dumped him anyway. And over a career? Lame excuse. She could have had both.)

6) Katie was too intelligent to marry a loser like that! Talk about a wild dream. :happyface

Here's my two cents worth.

1) Mrs. Cassidy (she was widowed after her poor husband was ran over by a steamroller.)

2) Did you notice how Marcy left the show after her marriage.

3) Katie didn't even have a boyfriend in high school.:( Unless maybe she was sneaking around under her fathers radar screen. ;)

4) Only a truly desperate woman would take up with Clayton.

Hey, you reminded me about Mrs Cassidy too. Boy, everyone who came to work at that mansion just had lousy luck, huh?

True about Katie. She had guys who were interested in her but her dad was so strict. He didn't even want her dancing with boys (remember that episode?) Might have hurt her too that she had an "older" dad. They were probably stricter about those things.

Well, Clayton had money. Superficial women might go for him for that reason, but then they'd have to put up with his obnoxious personality. (Guess it's just not worth the money! )

I think you're right on the money about Gene. Not only was he an older dad, but she was his only child. His wife was dead, so Katie was all he had. It makes sense then that he was so strict with her.

Yes I agree, Katie's social life would have been very restricted due to those factors plus the fact that for security reasons the State Police probably escorted her around.

As attractive as she was, it still would've been pretty difficult finding a date when she had those Highway Patrolman hanging around all the time.

Interesting points. Despite all that, Katie was a level-headed, reasonable girl. Her dad, Benson and Kraus helped keep her grounded (figuratively and literally ).

Isn't it strange everyone was single on the Golden Girls as well. It was another Witt, Thomas, Harris production and come to think of it they all hung out in the kitchen a lot just like on Benson. :eatarrow:

The Golden Girls did for cheesecake what Benson did for milk! I like the girls, but not the cake; I love both Benson and milk though.

Anyway, I think that Gene's ultra-protectiveness for Katie could have been caused by a fear of losing the last of his little family.

It could also be a much milder form of how GIbson Gatling handled his children; he pretty much wanted his own way in everything.

^ Totally. Gene was a much better father than his own dad was.
