LOS ANGELES -- Kaley Cuoco is the only female in the main cast of the CBS Monday night comedy "The Big Bang Theory." That's OK by her.

"All my life, I have always had more guys who are friends than I have girls. I don't know why that is. It just is," Cuoco says in an interview just before the launch of the series.

What could be the reason? The 22-year-old California native is a former model. She was a ranked tennis player, and her athleticism helps her stay in shape. One men's magazine ranked her as one of the "100 Sexiest Women in the World" in 2005.

Gosh. You think it's a real mystery about those guy friends?

Cuoco, who has acted for more than 15 years, has another idea about why she has more male acting friends. Most of the actresses she has met have not been as easy to talk to as actors when it comes to show business.

"That's why I can relate to this character. She is comfortable around men. She is comfortable around women. She's easygoing," Cuoco adds.

She has to be easygoing since Penny, her character, shares the screen with four guys who are supposed to have massive IQs. Penny becomes the source of social training for the mega nerds.

Over the years, Cuoco has bounced between drama and comedy with roles on a variety of series, including "Charmed" and "8 Simple Rules ... for Dating My Teenage Daughter."

Cuoco wants to do all types of acting. But she finds the most comfort in comedy. And it is comedy where she has learned the most about her trade.

While working on "8 Simple Rules," she got to watch comedy master John Ritter work. He died in 2003.

"That was such an amazing part of my life. Just being around him every day and doing these scenes with him, I was watching and I was learning every day," Cuoco says.

"He made the audience want to keep watching, and it was very interesting.

"He was just so wonderful to be around, which is part of it too. He made us all want to be there and want to do better. I mean, he was just hilarious, hilarious."
