View Full Version : Did you know that Linda Lavin had a short lived sitcom AFTER Alice?
Brian Damage 04-20-2008, 08:05 PM I have been watching “Alice” reruns on cable, and I love them! It seems like that after the show went off the air, the star - Linda something - was in another series with a young woman as her daughter. What was the name of that show?
A: Well, “Alice” rerun-lover, “Linda something” is Linda Lavin, and the show you’re thinking of is called “Room for Two.” It ran on ABC from 1992-1993. Lavin played Edie Kurland, who moved from Ohio to live with daughter Jill (Patricia Heaton, pre-“Everybody Loves Raymond”), who was the producer of a network news show. Edie’s outspoken nature led to her joining the show as a commentator. Not-really-hilarious complications ensued.

I remember when it was on but I never actually watched it. I believe it was on opposite NBC's powerful Thursday night lineup so that's probably why it didn't have much of a chance.

Yeah, it looked like it sank faster than the Titanic!

Actually the first season, as a mid-season replacement, was in the Top 10, due to a great time slot. Then come fall, ABC gave the show The Ropers/Flo treatment--kicked it out of a cushy time slot where the show didn't have a prayer to survive.
catlover79 04-20-2008, 10:59 PM I watched that show when it was on...it got a lot of press here in the Cleveland area because Patty Heaton is a native.

Was it any good?

I remember very little about the show itself (I was only about 12 when it was on), but I remember liking what I saw.
Ireneparalegal 05-05-2008, 12:41 AM I think I saw only one episode and that was it for me. Not at all memorable. Who would have thought back then Patty would bloom into the star she is now. ;)
Jude The Obscure 05-05-2008, 12:44 AM I actually liked Patty in the shortlived DW spinoff "Women of the House".
Ireneparalegal 05-05-2008, 12:45 AM Now that show, I did not watch at all.
Jude The Obscure 05-05-2008, 12:48 AM I was (and still am) a BIG Delta Burke fan....of when she was thin and not-so-thin
Ireneparalegal 05-05-2008, 12:50 AM Oooo, nice to know. I like her for being her. Big or small. She shows that it is hard to maintain a skinny life. She had some medical issues recently with her meds. I hope she is alright now.
Jude The Obscure 05-05-2008, 12:53 AM Another reason I kinda identify with her. she is diabetic and so we know that struggle--of keeping blood sugar in check, meds, diet.......just take a look at my avatar!
Ireneparalegal 05-05-2008, 12:54 AM Yep. My youngest daughter has diabetes too. I love your avatar! Did you make that?

I would love to take credit for that, but I found it somewhere on the net and saved it. I have another one that says "A Clean House is a sign of a wasted life"

Hey now, I have a very clean house. :snob:

mstewart 05-05-2008, 09:30 AM Room for Two was a very good show and could had a nice run but once it was scheduled against Cheers it did not stand a chance.
OnTheMarkTexas 05-12-2008, 09:20 PM I remember this show quite fondly. The writing was pretty good, the acting was top notch, and as usual, Ms. Lavin sang the theme song, which by the way, was kinda catchy.
Sadly the first season's success did not guarantee it would be able to withstand ABC's mismanagement.
For the life of me, I can not fatham why any network would take a series that fininshed its first season in the Top 10 and start moving it all over its programming schedule and/or tweaking with the formula (does "Angie" and "Mork & Mindy" come to mind?)
If a series sucks and you want to give it an dignified send off, just place it on Saturday nights -- when no one is at home to watch TV.
catlover79 05-17-2008, 11:20 PM ^ I remember the theme song - quite a catchy tune.
