did Mike Evans sing on the theme song? It sure sounds like him on the male lead part.

Thats a good question Jude. I've always heard that none of the cast members sang on the song, but if you listen closely, it sure does sound like their're voices. To me it does anyway.

Mike Evans did not sing the song. It was performed by someone named James Gilstrap. Alan Bergman and Marilyn Bergman wrote the lyrics.

I agree. It sounds like John Amos and Ja'net DuBois to me.

It does sound like John Amos when the guy says, "Temporary Lay offs" When I was a kid, I thought it was him.

Most definitely. It's so strange that it's not him, when it sounds just like him.

John has that very deep voice. So I never thought it was him. If you listen to Mike Evans and his speaking voice on AITF or The Jeffersons, you will see why I thought it was him. But glad to know the mystery for me has been solved.

James Gilstrap was a prominent backup vocalist to Stevie Wonder, Syreeta, Quincy Jones, etc. during the 1970s. He sang the first lines of "You Are the Sunshine of My Life".

I know Mike Evans was co-creator of the series. Beyond that, I have no idea what his responsibilities were on the show.

I always heard the reason he left The Jeffersons was because he was working on Good Times scripts--now I just said, that's what I heard--not that it was a fact. Is it a coincidence that the proposed Black family was renamed the Evans'? And the youngest son was Michael Evans?

No he left the Jeffersons after season 1 because he felt his role became too small on the show and asked off the show.

He made some guest spots, like on the Practice in 1976, and on the Richard Pryor Show in 1977
