View Full Version : Johnny Depp Vows Never To Make A Romantic Comedy
Brian Damage 04-17-2008, 06:29 PM Johnny Depp has vowed never to star in a romantic comedy because he considers the genre "boring." The 44-year-old shot to fame in the 1991 fantasy epic Edward Scissorhands and has since made his name by taking on a variety of quirky film roles - including turns in Sleepy Hollow, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, and most recently in Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street.
And Depp insists he will never be drawn to roles in light-hearted films - no matter how much money he is offered.
He says, "There is a dark side in me, like in each one of us. I only feel the fun factor when turning to a dark role, like in my most recent film 'Sweeney Todd.' I wouldn't want to be in a romantic film, where it's about the boy meeting the girl, losing the girl, and getting her back. That would really bore me to death."

coffield3 04-17-2008, 08:09 PM He's awesome, romantic comedy's bore me too.
But I would walk five hundred miles,
And I would walk five hundred more
Just to be the man
Who walked a thousand miles
To fall down at your door (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Benny_%26_Joon)

 Yes but that was more of a quirky romantic movie, not your typical one.

That's funny... I feel the same way about watching Pirate movies.

coffield3 04-22-2008, 08:32 PM Fair do's

That is correct :)
Cactus Jack 04-22-2008, 10:17 PM Edward Scissorhands was a bit of one
Tweety 04-22-2008, 10:49 PM It could be just a case of Depp refusing to be in any movie where he doesn't get to wear eyeliner. In a good romantic comedy, if anyone wears eyeliner, it's usually the woman , not the guy.

Again, not exactly your typical romantic film, but it is classed as one.
Where was this info from?

I agree. I think the genre wouldn't be so stereotyped as boring if the writers would step outside the box a bit, and make it original like that one. Not Johnny related, but I also really enjoyed P.S. I Love You for the same reason. It wasn't your typical, overly predictable romantic comedy. l didn't think it was amazing by any means, but I definitely thought it was well above average.

catlover79 04-22-2008, 11:53 PM I couldn't see him doing a straightforward romantic movie anyway. He's made such a name for himself doing oddball roles that I don't think it would work. (Just my 2 cents!!)

Alot of his work is farce to some, like wearing eye make-up :)
rissycup 04-26-2008, 11:26 PM it just wouldnt look right if Johnny Depp was in a romantic comedy so im glad he'll never be in one. if he was i probably wouldnt watch it
Ireneparalegal 05-01-2008, 03:36 PM I might be in the minority, but I can't stand romantic comedies. It is a rarity if I do. Pretty Woman is a great movie but I am so sick of these romantic comedies that are being shelled out. It seems everytime I see a promo for one "coming soon to a theater" it is the same old storyline. Boy wants girl, girl wants someone else, boy gets girl. Or, poor girl wants rich man, rich man doesn't notice girl until she dupes him into thinking she is rich girl, truth comes out but love rules. They are all the same it seems.
