This is the kind of story that makes you want to say 'it couldn't have happened that way!'

But it did.

It started last week in the city of Dortmund, Germany when a thief broke into a home and stole a victim's collection of rare coins worth an estimated US$80,000. The crook kept the valuables for a few days and then suddenly realized that some other criminal might want to get his hands on the collectibles, so he did what any of us might. He took them to the nearest bank and prepared to deposit them for safe keeping.

And that's where this tale takes an almost Twilight Zone-like twist. As the thief handed over the coins to the bank official, the employee stopped short, stared at the valuables and instantly recognized them.

They'd been stolen from his home just a few days before.

The bank worker called police who rushed to the financial institution and arrested the startled robber. "I don't think the thief was expecting that," a police spokesman ventured in something of an understatement.

A 36-year-old man is accused in that robbery and several others. Cops say a search turned up a host of other long missing loot.
