April 12, 2008 -- PAULA Abdul won't be performing on the "Today" show, after all.

The "American Idol" judge, who hadn't performed live in years, has cancelled her April 25 live concert, part of the show's annual Summer Concert Series. She'll be replaced by Alicia Keys on April 21.

"Paul Abdul is no longer part of 'Today's' concert series at this time, however, she is always welcome at 'Today,' NBC said in a statement yesterday.

Abdul's representative did not respond to a request for comment.

Meanwhile, Michael Johns, voted off "American Idol" Thursday night, awoke to a phone call yesterday - from Dolly Parton.

"She was saying what a fan of mine she was," Johns told reporters yesterday. "It was so surreal to hear her say, 'I can't wait to duet with you one day.' "

Parton "mentored" the "Idol" contestants last week, when Johns nailed her song, "It's All Wrong, But It's Alright." The self-described "rock soul singer" said he didn't think he made a mistake by belting out Aerosmith's "Dream On" Wednesday night (this week's theme was inspirational music).

"I pick songs that mean something to me lyrically and emotionally," he said.

Paula did perform for the Super Bowl, and Randy Jackson played for her.
I fail to see how a lack of performance could affect if you're qualified to
judge AI. What about Simon? You will probably NEVER see him perform!

When was she ever qualified to judge a singing show? She's better off judging one of those dance shows, since her bread and butter was always choreography.

Sorry, I just don't see what that has to do with her being a judge on American Idol. I think she does an outstanding job, and nothing else she has going on should effect her part of AI.

She's just not as good a judge as she was when the show first began. I have to agree - she really isn't as qualified to judge the show anymore. I wouldn't be the least upset if they replaced her.

I just feel that the contestants deserve to be judged by someone who can act like a true professional and give constructive criticism. Paula has proved time and again that she is incapable of doing that. It's time to replace her.

i think all 3 of the judges are burnt out at this point. Simon is still pretty on, but Paula is kind of a joke (though i think this is her best year since Season 3) and Randy seems really off this season.

Randy seems really MEAN this season. At some times, even meaner than Simon. He's getting on my nerves too this season.

But, Paula is really a whole different person this year. She offers almost no good advice to the contestants at all.

shes been that way since like Season 3 though lol. i think she's been getting better this year. she's getting a little more constructive, and she doesnt seem totally insane all the time. there were times in Seasons 5 and 6 i thought she would like fall out of her chair and pass out or something.
