View Full Version : I saw nothing wrong with Tootie snapping on Mrs. Garrett about Jermaine Jackson
TVFactFan 04-12-2008, 05:35 PM I mean the Girl received a call letting her know that she was chosen to receive tickets to the concert who was one of her favorite singers and Mrs. Garrret Tells her NO she can't go? i would have snapped too
Mrs. Garrett: "I'm sorry Tootie but we can't go"
tootie: "I"M GOING!!!"
I also heard some of the audience members laughing when Tootie was CRYING and Hugging Mrs. Garrett-LOL
BTW: Why would a grown a$$ man grip up a 13 year old girl even if he she was running toward Jermaine jackson? He had his arm around her neck and arm behind her back. Damm he was a IDIOT-lol
Child_of_the_80s 04-12-2008, 06:29 PM
I was laughing my butt off when Tootie snapped at Mrs. G, even back then. But all of that crying and screaming made me dislike Tootie until the next season.

But she was given tickets to a concert of her favorite singer. And mrs. garrett statement was not going to make her feel better-"there will be other concerts"
HUH???-lol Other concerts?

That part made me go "WTH?", Other concerts? This is Jermaine Jackson, not Michael, what other concerts?
I think that statement alone is what made Tootie get overly emotional and all "I'll run away then."

i also liked when mrs. garrett said-"we are supposed to help jo" and tootie's funny a$$ reply-"i was but that phone call changes everything"
LOL

That was funny!
Funny how the other girls were all mad about Tootie going to the concert, I'm pretty sure if they were Tootie, they would have picked the concert.

did tootie have that dumb mushroom hairstyle in season 4?
Brieannas21 04-12-2008, 08:42 PM She was in a "Stocker" frame of mind. I think she was a bit out of control, especially for Jermaine Jackson.

i don't blame her, mrs. g wanted her to pass up on some free tickets-lol

That girl was out of control over a concert, she was acting like Jermaine was her boyfriend or somebody.
TVFactFan 04-12-2008, 09:07 PM That girl was out of control over a concert, she was acting like Jermaine was her boyfriend or somebody.
that's like me being 13, a huge fan of bernie mac and I received a call telling me i will get some free tickets to his show and then told by my mom I can't go because I have to help someone with something?? Iwould have popped a blood vessel-lol
catlover79 04-12-2008, 09:16 PM I haven't seen every FOL episode, but of the ones I have, this is hands down my least favorite. Tootie went psychotic!! It was just a hammy episode all around.
RoryGilmore 04-12-2008, 09:42 PM Yeah I thought the whole thing was stupid and Mrs. Garrett was totally right in trying to get her not to go.
TVFactFan 04-12-2008, 09:46 PM Yeah I thought the whole thing was stupid and Mrs. Garrett was totally right in trying to get her not to go.
so she should have passed up free concert tickets?
RoryGilmore 04-12-2008, 09:59 PM so she should have passed up free concert tickets?
I dont necessarily think she should've given up the tickets but she shouldnt have snapped at Mrs. G. like that. Mrs. G was only looking out for Tootie, and obession like that isnt healthy

I agree, she was beyond happy about concert tickets, the girl actually thought that Jermaine knew who she was. The girl was a little whacked out of her mind.
RetroJessica 04-12-2008, 11:24 PM I remember being a little creeped out by this episode when I saw it for some strange reason. But watching it now, I can see what the whole point of this episode was to show that alot of teenage and pre-teen girls become so obsessed with a certain celebrity that they sort of forget that there are other things and people in life. You start to neglect your family, friends and your responsibilities. I admit I had my share of rock star crushes in my day (Nick Rhodes and John Taylor from Duran Duran and Joe Elliott from Def Leppard spring to mind) and I did get a little like Tootie when I was told I couldn't see them in concert. This is one of those weird but poignant episodes. And, I know Michael was unavailable, but...Jermaine Jackson??? Really???
ThomasE 04-12-2008, 11:39 PM Solomon, to answer your question, yes Tootie did have the mushroom hairstyle througout season four. Tootie started struting that mushroom style during the middle of season three.

ThomasE 04-13-2008, 12:01 AM It was gone at the beginning of season five.

Back then, I was laughing my behind off, mainly because of the way she said "I'm going!", that was so unexpected. I can sort of understand Tootie's behavior, I also had my share of crushes and almost blew up at my own father for not letting me go see Purple Rain, at nine years old mind you, but Tootie was a little "touched" in this episode, even though I wouldn't pass up a free ticket, her emotions were all over the place.
RetroJessica 04-14-2008, 12:22 AM I kind of thought it was sad at the end though. Jermaine seemed a little cold towards her.
Are You Right?
Tootie was SO OBSESSED with Jermaine Jackson that she totally blew off a promise that she made to Jo to help out at a scholarship fair and Tootie was slacking in her schoolwork as well.
It was like nothing else mattered to her at that point. Mrs. Garrett was trying to get her to see that what she was doing wasn't right and YES, they did have a prior commitment with the fair. I mean, it made no sense for Mrs G to just drop everything to take Tootie to a concert, BUT Tootie freaked out and after seeing her this way, Mrs. G out of fear said "We'll go".
But Tootie got a rude awakening at the end with her ruined present. It took that to make her see that she was "starstruck".
Tootie was wrong for snapping at mrs. Garrett, but she was in the wrong before her freak-out.

Yes I believe she was right, we are talking about a young teenage girl who was given free tickets to a concert of one of her favorite singers and why would she not go??? What was she supposed to do with the tickets? throw them in the trash?

I can understand Tootie being upset and crying because she was upset. AND when Mrs. G told Tootie that it was ok that she could go Tootie was still freaking out and crying like a mad person.
No one is saying that Tootie didn't have the right to be upset and cry. But she didn't have to become inconsolable and act like a mental patient.
Like my grandpa would say "The girl went to the other said of her mind."

She was only acting like that because Mrs. Garrett wouldn't let her take advantage of FREE CONCERT TICKETS!!-lol I would have been n shock myself, "ARE YOU KIDDING ME??? I have free tickets and and you are telling me I can' go???

Yes she was wrong for disrespecting Mrs. Garrett but not wrong for anything else
RetroJessica 04-19-2008, 12:34 PM I wonder how Kim made herself cry and react that way, because in real life, Jermaine and the rest of the Jacksons, from what I've heard, were actually friends of hers and her family. I guess it was just really good acting.

Mrs. G. was not Tootie's mother. But she was the girls' guardian. I am sure Tootie's mother or father would NOT have allowed Tootie to go to the concert and therefore, Mrs. G. did what she thought her parents would do in the situation. No mention was made of Tootie's parents in this episode and in a lot of episodes, so I am sure her parents left Mrs. G. in charge to make decisions the way they would.

Let me add to my post above. Tootie had an obligation to Jo and to make scarves. Tootie was too young to be at a concert by herself and Mrs. G. had more important things to do than to escort Tootie to a concert.

lol
Ireneparalegal 05-06-2008, 02:09 PM She can say whatever the heck she wants, she just better watch her mouth and not disrespect her elders. I expect a 13 yr. old to be upset, but that won't get her what she wants in my book. ;)

Ireneparalegal 05-06-2008, 07:33 PM So FREE JERMAINE JACKSON tickets wasn't more important than helping jo??????????-lol
Tootie ALREADY HAD A COMMITMENT! She did not say to Jo, "I will help you but if anything comes up, I won't." That is how life works Solomon, you are an adult you should know if you promise something, you must hold up your end of the deal. Tootie was being immature and stupid. She even realized AFTERWARDS that she was not Jermaine's number one fan, she was nothing to him.

Oh I expect the behavior, BUT she should NOT have gone to the concert. Mrs. G. should not have allowed it. Mrs. G. is her guardian and as her guardian she is doing what she expects Tootie's parents would do in that situation. I doubt Tootie's mother or father would have allowed it. As a parent, I would not have.

pfeifferobsessed 05-07-2008, 05:25 AM mrs. g was responsible for them after the whole "the new girl" part 1 incident...so she shouldve taken the role of her parents...and told tootie "no"! when you make a commitment, you stick to it...regardless of your age! thats how i was raised, anyways!

Exactly. I was a 13 year old at one time  and as many rebellious things I have done one thing I learned from those times is that THE PARENT IS IN CHARGE. Until you are an adult, making your own money and living in your own place, you follow the rules of the house that you live in.
TVFactFan 05-07-2008, 06:32 PM I just don't know how a parent doesn't let their 13 year old daughter go see her favorite singer for free-lol

So you would have really told your daughter no?-lol
Ireneparalegal 05-07-2008, 06:59 PM In a heartbeat. My daughters know if they make a commitment, they better keep it. You have to teach kids responsibility. That responsibility doesn't stop because a concert comes up.
Besides Tootie felt like a fool at the end of the episode. She realized it wasn't worth going after finding out the hard way she was no one special to Jermaine. You got to understand the whole episode, not just the free tickets.

In one respect it was a lesson learned. But she did not learn the lesson that once you make a commitment, you stick with it. She was also rude to Mrs. G. I bet Tootie would not have had that attitude with her mother. If she did, her mother would have put her in her place. ;) Respect your elders.

Mrs. Garrett: Sorry Toootie you can't go
Tootie: OH I"M GOING!!!!!!!!
LOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Ireneparalegal 05-07-2008, 09:25 PM I remember saying things like that as a teen...IN MY HEAD! If I was told "NO" it meant NO!
What Mrs. G. should have done was get Tootie's mother on the phone, told her mother the obligation Tootie made and then handed the phone over to Tootie and say, "Here ask your mother if you can go." That would have been the end of that. ;)

Ireneparalegal 05-07-2008, 09:30 PM I don't think she would have like Mrs. Garret anymore if she had done that-lol
Too damn bad. Tootie was left in the care of Mrs. G. If she didn't like Mrs. G, she should have left, but until her obligation with Mrs. G was over, she had no choice. Tough chitlins.
mstewart 06-03-2008, 09:21 AM When Tootie went nuclear on Mrs. Garrett about going to the concert she got scared and let Tootie go. It was wrong giving in to a child's temper tantrums and some serious discipline should had taken place. Once Mrs. G said no she wasn't going and Tootie went there by telling Mrs Garrett that she was going. That was straight up not being respectful of her elders and plain talking back. That whole act with Tootie was way over the top. You can see the bit that she did on YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IubygCvXB_Y
I don't blame the girls for being angry with Mrs. Garrett about giving in to Tootie. Tootie should had been dealt with. If this was real life when I was told no it meant no and I wasn't going to go there and braced up to my parent and tell them I am doing this whether you like it or not. Tootie was outright disrespctful toward Mrs. G.
littlebelle 06-03-2008, 07:56 PM Tootie's whole tantrum freaked me out. Although I do understand obsessions... so I guess it was some what normal. It probably made me feel uncomfortable because it was pretty realistic.

Yes, it was. It looks more like Michael these days!! I also like Jermaine's "Tell Me I'm Not Dreaming" (which also has Michael singing backup) and his duet with Whitney Houston: "Nobody Loves Me Like You Do".
Nighthawk76 06-12-2008, 01:03 PM Even though "Starstruck" isn't exactly my favorite episode, I don't dislike it either. I think that Tootie's reaction wasn't at all uncommon for a girl of her age. I think that most of you have seen footage from the 1960's of teenage girls getting hysterical over the Beatles. Also, when I was in middle school, I saw the same reaction of girls my age over New Kids on the Block. The fact that Tootie went nuts over Jermaine Jackson is realistic.
I think the major problem of this episode is that it is one of the few FOL episodes that is truly dated. Most people don't listen to Jermaine Jackson anymore. Infact, I don't much remember him period. Younger viewers of the show probably don't have the slightest idea who he even is.
Jude The Obscure 06-12-2008, 07:15 PM Yes, Mrs G refers to the same frenzy you mention about the Beatles. I just wish Mrs G would have done a Cher on Tootie! "SLAP! Snap out of it!!!"
I think the writers simply subbed Jermaine in here for Michael, since Jermaine was obtainable for a guest spot. in every other episode, Tootie gushes on and on about Michael--not once about Jermaine. If Jermaine had been her crush all along, we might have bought it more readily.
LoveMrsG 06-27-2008, 03:23 AM Personally, I think that everybody's right here. I think that Tootie was completely in the wrong for being so disrespectful to one of her elders, which is why I think the audience ooed and aahed and laughed a little bit when she actually did so. When I saw this episode for the first time, I couldn't believe that one of the girls would dare speak that way to Mrs. Garrett. I think it equally shocked the audience. I also think that it makes a lot of sense that a thirteen-year-old girl would react the way that Tootie did in that situation, but that doesn't make Tootie right by any means. Of course she wasn't happy that Mrs. G. was telling her that she had to stand by her promise to Jo and that she couldn't accept free tickets to see one of her favorite singers in concert, but that's not the point. The point is that Tootie gave Jo her word that she would help out at the fair, and that Mrs. Garrett was right in trying to make her stick by it. And yes, I think Mrs. G. was wrong by giving in to Tootie, but I understand her reasons for doing so when, in the next scene with the other girls, she's talking about people's unhealthy obessions with the Beatles and how scary it was. Mrs. Garrett did what she did because she saw that Tootie's love of Jermaine Jackson was clearly turning into an unhealthy, even frightening obsession. And, also I think because by nature, Mrs. G. is a very soft-hearted person, and she just didn't have it in her to completely be "the bad guy," even though when you're in a parenting role like she was, sometimes you clearly have to be.
LoveMrsG 06-27-2008, 03:36 AM Sorry, everybody. I just joined tonight and I should've introduced myself. I just jumped in and started replying. I LOVE Facts and especially Mrs. Garrett. I've been a fan ever since Facts first came on Nick-at-Nite and then the Hallmark Channel. I don't get Comcast and I've basically been in mourning ever since Sony obviously fell asleep at the wheel after releasing season three.
Anyway, I just wanted to add that I've noticed that the "Starstruck" episode seems to be one of the most hated eps amongst Facts fans, and I for one am kind of sorry to see it. I like it myself. It's what the show is all about -- growing up. Yes, Tootie is annoying and immature, but when you're 13, it comes with the territory. I also wanted to say that as a whole, I feel so sorry for Tootie throughout season three. I think one Internet article said it best when it said that "As a whole, season three was not a very kind one to Tootie." The girls are mean and insensitive to Tootie in the season 3 premiere, "Growing Pains," and they make fun of her, pushing her to get drunk -- which is something ALL the girls did in that episode, not just Tootie. Then the other girls bully Tootie into lying about a romance in "Dear Me." Then, of course, there's the Jermaine Jackson ep. Poor, poor Tootie. Life just ain't fair if you're the youngest, is it? :)

catlover79 06-27-2008, 04:07 PM Yes, Mrs G refers to the same frenzy you mention about the Beatles.
Maybe Tootie never mentioned Jermaine again because she was so embarrassed after that whole incident. Remember when Kim Fields (Tootie) played the friend of Janet Jackson on Good Times?? Ironic, huh?
Nighthawk76 06-27-2008, 05:29 PM I wasn't trying to say that Tootie's behavior was right, I just think it was normal. When I was 13, I remember all the girls getting into a crazed frenzy over the New Kids. Infact, I remember one girl coming to school in tears because her parents would not let her go see the New Kids in concert.

That's a good point. Jermaine was never mentioned prior to that episode or after it. Tootie's crushes were on Michael Jackson and Billy Dean Williams.

I don't even know what channel FOL was on when I made this thread lol
I;m guessing On Demand
Gemini_89 08-10-2018, 08:59 AM Kim Fields acted her butt off in this ep! The fact that it has a big impression over all of yall decades later is proof of that.
Schmoopie 06-24-2019, 03:00 AM OMG, have you ever had an episode of a show in the back of your mind for years and you can't really place the show, but then you finally see it? I had this experience last week! I'm making my way through all nine seasons and when I got to this episode it wasn't quite the same as I remembered it to be. The only thing I really remembered was the way that paper mache head was handled by Jermaine Jackson's manager/staff. It wasn't that memorable of an episode but I think that seeing that part kind of got to me b/c I have sent a lot of letters to celebrities and that kind of showed some reality of what can happen. Or what could have happened back in the 80's.

Yup, lol, that's always neat.
It wasn't that memorable of an episode
Tootie going into an uncontrollable fit of hysteria, defying Mrs. Garrett, Natalie pulling off the paper mache Jermaine's nose, the backstage chaos at the concert, Tootie screaming when grabbed/held by Jermaine's security, her paper mache of him ruined in the shower, and Jermaine Jackson showing that meeting celebs isn't always what it's cracked up to be "isn't that memorable"??
It's sure always been memorable to me! lol :)

Tootie is always hysterical over something. That's why I can't stand her. I agree the ep does stand out which is probably why I remembered it after all these years. It just wasn't as great as some of the other eps. That's what I meant when I said it wasn't memorable.
'80sSitcoms 06-28-2019, 01:51 PM Tootie is always hysterical over something.
Well, certainly not to this degree, lol.
