There are two possibilities that come to mind:

1) Marvin Lee Smith had an accomplice who has yet to be idenitfied.
2) The extra set of footprints may have been a coincidence, perhaps having been made at another time, causing UM or the authorities to mistakenly (or prematurely) arrive at that conclusion.

However, with the latest development in the case, it is too soon to know for certain as to why three sets of footprints were found at the crime scene. I guess we'll have to wait until the case progresses further.

In any event, it is good to hear that they have obtained enough to arrest someone. It may have come 17 years late, but it shouldn't be too long before justice is served.

I wonder if he gets convicted of the sexual assault if they will charge him with the murder afterwards and if they are waiting to charge him with the murder to put pressure on him to give up the others that participated in the crimes against Jessica Lyn Keen. This was one of those cases that scared the crap out of me whenever I would watch it like the I-70 Killer, the Blind River rest stop killings, the Dorothy Donovan murder, the realtor that got murdered, the guy meeting the guy early at his office one morning and got murdered in the elevator, the case where the possible killer phoned in the murder of the woman from a payphone, the Asian girl stabbed and dumped in a dumpster in an alley by the crazy looking yuppie in a track suit, the "We did it Omar!" arsons, or the Dana Satterfield murder.

If you're squeamish, or if you just don't like to hear horrific tales of human suffering, you might not want to read on from this point, because we now know exactly what happened to Jessica Keen that April day in 1991 that turned out to be her last.

Smith abducted her from a Weinland Park bus stop around 6PM. He must have driven her out of the city (the Dispatch article isn't clear), but she escaped her bindings when they were near Foster Chapel cemetery and ran for it. Police found torn pieces of duct tape and tattered clothing along the path she must have taken in a desperate attempt to flee her kidnapper. But she hit a wooden fencepost and was knocked to the ground.

Marvin Lee Smith, Jr. caught up with her there, and it was there that he pulled a 70-pound tombstone out of a nearby grave and used it to beat her to death. It broke in two while he was using it as a bludgeon; afterward he threw the pieces over the back cemetery fence.

So...there we finally have it. The whole story. Not a good one, but at least a complete one. And this nondescript country cemetery was the scene of the whole nightmare ordeal. What more can you say? The world can be a terrible place sometimes.
