View Full Version : is it me or was season 8 better than 7?
Dean Winchester 04-09-2008, 02:10 AM I always thought the show died the moment Sam came in in mid-season 6. But at least from the three season 8 episodes on the BET marathon, I actually enjoyed the show. Granted, the new set was hard to adjust to, but the three ABC episodes BET showed reminded me more of the 1980-1983/4 heyday episodes instead of the Sam-infested 1984-1985 crap.
Pavan 04-09-2008, 10:58 AM I don't know why people thought the last two seasons were bad because of Sam and Maggie. I enjoyed them more than the first two seasons.
The last season became more focused on Arnold again.
TVFactFan 04-09-2008, 11:24 AM Yes give me the last two seasons over the first two any day of the week. My least favorite season is season 1.
JethroSimpson 04-09-2008, 01:04 PM The problem with season 8 is that although there were some great episodes (eg Bulimia, Sam kidknapped) there were some really really bad ones such as Arnold's Tangled Web and Love on The Run. I did enjoy a lot of season 8 but think 7 was probably more consistant.

The only things that really get me though season1 are Charlotte Rae and Conrad Bain.
Arnold here is too precocious and Willis is too ill mannered.

Yeah I notice I like season 1 pretty much for Charlotte Rae and Charlotte Rae only. I love Mrs. G's quirkiness on DS! Willis annoyed me on the early eps.

mrs garrett was definitely my favourite maid and i was dissapointed when she departed for the facts of life, her counterparts faired no better compared to her

I think Adelaide was her best replacement, no doubt about it and I wish she had stayed on the show... Pearl I can't stand though.

I agreee with Pav. The last two seasons were good and the focus was on Gary again. Sorry Sol, but I loved the first season of the show. Now the set for the last season great. I liked it. The other set for the mid 80's getting a little out of style for my taste.
TVFactFan 04-09-2008, 08:26 PM TV critic said this about the Arnold character in season 1 in 1978
"He was annoyingly playful"
LOL

I can buy that totally.

Was Nedra Volz ill when she was replaced or just could no longer handle the workload?
ThomasE 04-09-2008, 11:45 PM That is a good question. You have got me to thinking Jude.
willjarmon 04-10-2008, 11:02 AM The second half of Season 7 was good I thought and Season 8 had some good shows but I think some of those shows still needed some follow up and the biggest Mistake was not having the whole cast in no episode after the Premire and Untill the next to last epside you almost forget Drummond is married there was so much to be done if there was a season 9 and suppositly there 4 episodes taped for season 9 but hence forth have never been seen
willjarmon 04-10-2008, 11:03 AM oh and Adelaide was the best of the housekeepers don't know why she never got billing
snl 70s show fan 04-10-2008, 07:16 PM Was Nedra Volz ill when she was replaced or just could no longer handle the workload?nedra left to co star on filthy rich wich also costared dixie carter
GARFIELDKOOL 04-10-2008, 07:31 PM Season 7 was bad, season 8 was horrible! Season 8 just pushed Willis aside. Whenever you seen him, he may have been walking through the room and that was all you saw of him.
One thing people don't realize is that Mr. Drummond changed the last two seasons. He got a little nasty towards Arnold, and favored Sam. I hated it.

Thanks!
the irony being that once FR got cancelled, Dixie would go to DS!
Jude The Obscure 04-11-2008, 02:04 AM I hated the bedwetting by Sam episode--Arnold is treated like dirt here and I was rooting him on when he sassed Maggie back! :D

I hated that ep too! Sam was treated and acted like a big baby! I hated Drummond too around this time. He was so one sided when it came to Sam and Maggie! Maggie was a bitch, you could tell she didn't like Arnold. All she cared about was her brat Sam and Drummond's money.

Dixie Carter's cold as fish performance really came through. Her first season Julia on DW resembled her Maggie a lot!
icecream 04-15-2008, 03:33 PM Season 8 would probably be my least favorite as it doesn't have Kimberly.

Once again I truly hated early season 7 cause eveything was about Sam then all of a sudden you had like 3 Willis shows in a row then all is focused on Arnold from like February to May 1985 (except the 2 episodes about Drummond's company)
OnTheMarkTexas 05-10-2008, 12:20 AM I actually enjoyed the final season as well. For starters, I was so glad to see they updated the set. That dingy yellow paint had to go !
Also, I thought the writing had been a bit better than it had been the past couple of seasons on NBC.
You could tell that the producers were really trying to keep the show going and I felt that ABC should have given it at least one more season to prove itself.
Jude The Obscure 05-10-2008, 01:29 AM It will be to me "new" episodes--season 8, because I really didn't watch DS anymore after the switch to ABC, nor with Dana Plato really not being on the show.

You stopped watching because of Dana?-lol
Jude The Obscure 05-10-2008, 01:36 AM No, I stopped because whatever was on at the same time as DS was more interesting to me

Dana was featured more on season eight than he was on season seven. She was in four episodes. Basically, you can say that others characters did roughly several more than that. LOL. With the way that other characters were seldom seen, Kimberly's name could have been added to the credits.

Wasn't Todd Bridges in the process of being phased out himself?

Jude I think by season 8, Kimberly and Willis were tood old to be apart of the show so to me there limited roles were understandable

Sort of like if The Brady Bunch had a season six, you know Greg's appearances would have had to be limited. Barry was already near 21 at the time and just how many more of the kiddie type plots could he have done?

Exactly, once the oldest child in a family sitcom is out of highschool they will have to be in college-ON SCREEN or OFFSCREEN-lol

the exception to this rule is JJ on GT

And now you can see why Esther Rolle and James Amos was so upset about the GROWTH of his character-lol
He was supposed to be working or going to college not just sitting around the house acting crazy
Natalie1969 06-01-2011, 01:23 PM I really liked seasons 6-8. Maggie and Sam breathed new life into the show. Also it was cool watching Arnold hang with his friends-you can always count on something crazy to happen. I also liked season 1 very much. It laid the foundation for the rest of the show's run. The rich v poor and black v white theme was done very well. It was great seeing how the characters from diffrent backgrounds interacted. It was an interesting culture clash.
