View Full Version : Eliminate The State
BensonFan 04-08-2008, 10:38 PM Alright, let's play a new game here. (Although I plan to continue the A-Z; that's endless fun for me! :p )
There's always been a lot of speculation over the home state of the show. In which state is Governor Gatling actually governing?
Of course, we know that supposedly NONE of them are the correct answer but I figured we could have a little fun with this.
Name a state (ONE PER POST ONLY SO WE CAN KEEP IT GOING FOR A WHILE!) and tell why it is NOT where the action takes place.
I'll start:
IDAHO
In the very first episode, Governor Gatling asks, "Why couldn't I have been the Governor of Idaho? Kill a few potatoes, who'd care?"
robyrob 04-08-2008, 11:22 PM well, its not in Washington D.C. because they travelled 900 miles to go see the president
svt65 04-09-2008, 12:39 AM It's not in Oregon, where Gene said those beavers were being relocated to.
Boy, I just watched the pilot -- love those outside shots of the Mansion!
BensonFan 04-09-2008, 07:59 AM It's not CALIFORNIA;
In the episode when they are experiencing tremors and Katie says something about it being an earthquake, Benson says, "An earthquake? This isn't California."
robyrob 04-09-2008, 12:54 PM its not Hawaii - they dont have any LUMBERMILLS (like the kind the Governor ran) in Hawaii!
BensonFan 04-09-2008, 08:33 PM It's not COLORADO...
In one of the early episodes we meet the Governor's father who said he's glad he moved out of the state talking about his son being the Governor (he's such a great guy, isn't he? ) and from what the Governor said, he lived in Colorado.
svt65 04-10-2008, 01:14 AM It's not New Mexico, b/c that's where they were heading for the solar energy conference.
blink 04-12-2008, 09:49 PM I'm still looking for the information in my 1956 encyclopedies. For some reason I can't find anything about Alaska or Hawaii even being states.
svt65 04-18-2008, 01:49 PM OK, now I'm working from memory, as my tapes are currently stored away.
It's not Texas, b/c that's where they called to talk to J.J. Gallagher (the rich Kraus double) and also b/c that's where Pete and Denise moved for her new job.

Well, Texas is a pretty big state, but you're probably right. Houston is the place we're talking about for both of the things you mention, and the state capital of Texas is Austin. That's not all that far from Houston geographically, so it's highly unlikely moving to Houston would be such a big deal if they were already in Austin.
BensonFan 04-19-2008, 12:13 AM It's not ALASKA...
In one episode when Benson plays big buddy to a young boy, the boy's father is interviewing for a job, and the boy said he is applying for a job in Alaska. I don't think you'd say that if you were already living in Alaska.
BensonFan 04-19-2008, 11:16 AM It's not GEORGIA; Benson mentioned a couple of times having some trouble "down in Georgia."
blink 04-23-2008, 07:53 PM It's not Arkansas or Georgia, because the Governor's daughter was way too cute. Although Chelsea Clinton has become a very attractive young woman, does anyone know what ever happened to Amy Carter?
BensonFan 04-23-2008, 08:03 PM does anyone know what ever happened to Amy Carter?
Nope!
It's not FLORIDA; they mentioned travelling there when Benson was given an honorary degree and also when Clayton's friend owned real estate, he had land deals "down in Florida." This safely excludes that state.
And blink, I don't think you can discount Arkansas just because Katie was too cute.
blink 04-24-2008, 08:32 PM You know you're right. I need a better reason it can't be Arkansas other than Kattie's cuteness.
Oh, I got it. There's no desert around here for Clayton to crash a helicopter in. :smash: :snob:
BensonFan 04-24-2008, 10:24 PM It's apparently not NEW JERSEY; in one episode Pete says (about doing a Johnny Appleseed day) "we tried something like this in New Jersey once but it didn't catch on" or something like that.
Ironically, some people thought the state might be NJ. For one thing, Clayton said at Benson's apartment, "I never tasted a New Jersey chablis before." They thought this implied they were in NJ. Also, I read somewhere that the map behind Benson's chair in his Budget Director's office was a map of NJ. Was never able to confirm that though.
faubert 04-25-2008, 05:47 PM The map behind Benson's desk is not a map of New Jersery. Its a map of Long Island NY. I had the same map on my bedroom wall.

Oh, ok....thanks for clearing that up! :D
robyrob 04-25-2008, 08:35 PM well, it CAN'T be New York, because thar haint no deserts nor indian reserves in New York state (are there?)
BensonFan 04-27-2008, 01:46 PM well, it CAN'T be New York, because thar haint no deserts nor indian reserves in New York state (are there?)
Yeah, it's not NY anyway, because in one episode Pete asks the Governor why he's bringing in "that guy from New York" to help him with his image.
It's also not LOUISIANA because Pete mentioned that Clayton's rich friend owned land down in the southeast, and mentioned LA. as one of the places.

Here I am quoting myself.
It's also not TENNESSEE because he also mentions this state in that same sentence (I just watched the episode again, so I know.) :D
BensonFan 05-27-2008, 10:23 PM It's not IOWA...
In the episode where Clayton meets his blind date, he says to her, "Well it's obvious Iowa has more to offer than corn." (She was a former Miss Iowa)...doesn't seem like something you'd say if you were already in the state.
blink 06-02-2008, 10:40 PM It's not Louisiana, because they had counties and not parishes. :bluesbros
megamanj2004 06-03-2008, 11:44 AM It's not UTAH, b/c Utah is a desert state.
It might be Washington state, but who knows.
