View Full Version : Episodes you just can't stand!
Jude The Obscure 04-08-2008, 02:06 PM I really really despise, "Tri State's Most Wanted"--I avoid it whenever it plays. I can't hit on why exactly but maybe I just don't like the way Mama is portrayed as too gullible.
I also don't like the episode with Fran's Will is read......it just seems very petty to have the situation and esp that skinflint of a lawyer!
gidgetgrape 04-08-2008, 02:48 PM I don't like the one where Mama is a detective.
Jude The Obscure 04-08-2008, 02:51 PM You mean, the one where Iola's mother is missing and Mama dreams she is one of those old film noir detectives? I kinda like that one. :)
jterry 04-08-2008, 03:02 PM I don't like the one where Mama is a detective.
I completely agree! That is my least favorite episode ever. I don't know why, but I always turn the channel when its on. It gets on my nerves.

I was going to reply in this thread that there aren't any Mama's Family episodes that I can't stand, but then you reminded me of that one, and yeah, I can stand it, but I don't like it much.
While it does come closest to one that I can't stand, I would still rather watch it than most other things on tv.
Penny Lane 04-09-2008, 09:46 AM Mama's Girls
PlayOn 04-09-2008, 10:02 PM i like them all.
Myles 04-09-2008, 11:52 PM Mama's Silver.
Episode just annoys me, for all I care Claude can go jump in a lake.

the way Mama yells....."CLAUDE CANEMAKER!!"
For the longest time, that episode would end up playing as the first episode in reruns--though it makes no sense, storyline wise with the rest of the season.
I wonder if he was intended to be a supporting character because he was also in the Vint Tries to Marry an Illegal Alien episode, which for some reason ION tends to skip.
Jonathan 04-10-2008, 01:05 AM I don't like the one where Mama is a detective.
I really dislike this one. I never make it to the end.

Yeah, that one and also the one where Vint marries that foreigner. I like the Iola/Bubba years SO much better!:happyface
ilovethe80s 04-10-2008, 01:43 PM I like most of the episodes but I don't really like the one were she has to babysit Eugene I don't know I guess he was supposed to be a brat he was just annoying in my opinion.
ilovethe80s 04-10-2008, 01:48 PM Yeah, that one and also the one where Vint marries that foreigner. I like the Iola/Bubba years SO much better!:happyface
I agree I like Iola/Bubba years more too no offense to any one who likes the earlier seasons I think they are ok but I think those seasons are funnier.

Thats where I have to disagree with most people here. The earlier ones were just classic. But I am warming up to the Bubba/Iola ones. Lost its camp and theatricality though.
Anyways, the only Mama episodes I dont like at all is when they go to Hawaii. That was just a mistake. The detective one was not great, but I could tolerate it.
Jude The Obscure 04-11-2008, 12:26 AM I love the Bubba/Iola years, although Vinton was just a tad too wimpy/sissyfied. Sometimes, I just wanted to smack him and tell him "oh grow a pair!" In the early episodes, I sometimes felt there were just too many characters at times, but there Vinton was a little more self assured and Naomi was more direct in her sarcastic remarks :D

I dont think "sissyfied" is quite the right word. More like "babyfied". Vinton just got dumber and dumber (well maybe just not as quick witted)
ilovethe80s 04-11-2008, 12:42 AM well it's not that i totally dislike the earlier episodes it's just I think i could of done without Buzz and Sonya and I'm not the biggest fan of Eunice either but that's just my opinion I agree that it seemed like their were too many characters. I still like the show though.
rperegrine75 04-11-2008, 12:45 AM Vint had a mind of your typical 9 year old sometimes.
I remember a episode where he was digging his hand though the Dino Puffs cereal for the prize inside, a small plastic T-Rex,
Bubba found it when he pored cereal in his bowl. Vint grabs the toy and starts playing with it on his arm then starts doing T-Rex imitations. Priceless......

Fair enough. But actually Eunice was the main character on the Family Sketches, lol. I guess what was hard when they transcribed Mama from a small sketch on the CBS to a 1/2 hour sit com, it was hard because Mama all of a sudden was the main character, whereas on CBS Eunice was.
I guess thats how it goes. I like Eunice. CB is funny as heck!
The later shows actually got too watered down and more conventional sit com-ish without character driven jokes, more joke_punchline format. Plus, at the very end it was more like Vicki Lawrence in a wig than a real grandma.

yeah i actually sort of agree with you in some ways. I actually never really watched The Carol Burnett Show that much I know my parents did and they said it was really funny and i agree she is funny. I guess she is supposed to be over the top sort of. I actually watched this show in reruns i didn't watch it when it originally aired.

Did you know that after Mama was canceled by NBC and before the syndicated version got underway, Carol had called Vicki to revive the show as "Mama and Eunice"? When she found out that Vicki had been in discussion to revive the show with Carol's ex, Joe Hamilton, she got angry with Vicki and for awhile, they didn't speak. This was mentioned in Vicki's autobiography.

Im glad they patched things up. Janet and Chrissy from Three's Company still aren't speaking to each other.
Jude The Obscure 04-11-2008, 06:41 PM ^ Yes, I'm glad. As for those other two, makes you wanna just slap them silly--life is so short, people! I lost my older brother last year and he was just 41--so glad we were friends at that point in his life.
MikeLutton 04-14-2008, 09:59 PM i didnt know that i also didnt like childs play and the fourtune teller episode that was kind of dumb and one about who knocked out mama with the pan when ellen and eunice was making mamas strawberry jam

Wow, thats a first. The gooseberry jam episodes IMO is one of the best ever!

Certainly is the best episode featuring Eunice, IMO.
Myles 04-17-2008, 08:20 AM Certainly is the best episode featuring Eunice, IMO.
I agree. I'm not particularly fond of Eunice, but that episode is downright hilarious. I love Eunice's side of the story the most. Naomi and her motel sugar packet collection.

I love that one!! LOL
Eunice, as a character was very annoying.....but I know she was supposed to be! I really don't like the episode where her and Mama go to jail. You'd think they would allow for some growth of character and leave it at that, but no, they have to end it with them two arguing over petty things.
MavFan92 04-17-2008, 11:00 PM I'm not real wild about the Mother's Day episode where Vint wins a dinner for two at Abdul's Garden of Eatin'. Or the one where Mama is a detective looking for Iola's mom. They were BOTH on last night on ION.

Definitely agree about the detective one. The Mother's Day episode isn't too bad.. its kinda funny- "Abdul's Garden of Eatin'"..
Jude The Obscure 05-11-2008, 12:31 AM Just thought of another one--the one where Mama slips at the bank and the rest of the family tries to convince her to sue so they can get a windfall. The characters here are really greedy, just like the tax audit episode.
Loopie63 06-06-2008, 01:38 PM Can't stand Mama's Girls. Also I prefer the Bubba/Iola episodes hands down.

that one is pretty funny.
I couldn't stand that episode where Mama agrees to be more giving to her family. They asked to use HER stuff and then when they did get her stuff, things went wrong. And then they turn around and BLAME HER for the problems they have! I wanted to scream at the TV after seeing this one.
Loopie63 11-10-2008, 12:10 PM I also dislike the one where Mama is left alone for the weekend and she watches Iola's goldfish. BORING!
MikeLutton 11-12-2008, 04:18 PM I love that one!! LOL

I thought that one was funny.
The ones I cannot stand are:
Alien Marriage
Flaming Forties
Where's There Smoke
Mama See's Red
Flounder's Day
Guess Who's Going to Dinner
