Teens Arrested Over Taped Beating

CBS News
Posted: 2008-04-08 08:14:58

(April 8) - Eight teenagers have been arrested after filming the beating of another teen and threatening to post the video on the Internet, sheriff's officials said.

Victoria Lindsay was attacked on March 30 by six teenage girls when she arrived at a friend's home, the Polk County Sheriff's Office said.

Two girls confronted Lindsay when she walked in, yelling and threatening her, an arrest report showed. Another girl struck her in the head several times and then slammed her head into the bedroom wall, knocking her unconscious.

"That is animalistic behavior. It's pack mentality. They lured her there to beat her," Sheriff Grady Judd said.

When she woke up, she was on the couch in the living room surrounded by the six girls. The teens blocked the door, held Lindsay down and began beating her, the report said. Two teenage boys waited outside the home as lookouts.

Portions of the video were released by the sheriff's office and posted on CBS affiliate WTSP-TV.

All eight were charged last week with battery and false imprisonment, which are third-degree felonies, the report said.

Lindsay was taken to the hospital by ambulance and treated for a concussion, damage to her left eye and left ear, and numerous bruises, the report said.

Lindsay's father said the teens' motivation for the attack was to produce a video that would become popular on YouTube, a video-sharing Web site.

"I want stiffer punishments for these shock Web sites that entice kids to make these videos so they can be famous on the Internet," Lindsay's father, who declined to give his name, told The Ledger in Lakeland, Fla. "That is the motive, I am sure of it. It's crazy and it's terrible and they're gonna pay."

But the mother of one of the girls said that Lindsay had provoked the other teens by threatening and insulting them on MySpace, a social networking Web site.

After the girls were arrested, Christina Garcia told the newspaper she looked at Lindsay's MySpace page and saw the message: "hahaha all in jail."

"A lot of people think, 'I can say whatever I want on here and nobody's gonna say anything,'" Garcia said. "A fight is a fight, but this was a beatdown. She did not deserve what she got, but I don't know how she's that messed up and able to get on the computer and talk about that."

It's not immediately clear if the video was ever posted on the Internet.

Another group of kids who just don't get it.

I have said this before in situations like this, they should release the name of these kids to the public. None of this "protect ing juveniles" crap.

They forfitted thier rights to be treated like kids when they beat this poor girl. Let everyone know who they are. Let them know the horrible things they did.

That doesn't make sense. They're minors because they're legally minors. However, I do agree with you that I don't see the point in withholding their names from the public.

One of the boys who was the "lookout" while the girls inside beat this girl to a pulp was interviewed on the news and his attitude was, "They were just doing what young girls do, what is the big problem here and why am I in trouble?"

DUH!!!!!! A**HOLE, because you are an accessory to a felony crime. These teens should be in jail merely for being stupid.

What I meant was they have thier identities protected becasue they are kids. Their actions shouldn't give them that privilage.

Totally aware that they are minors. But thanks for pointing that out anyway.

When taking to Jail, one of the girls said "Does this mean I'm not gonna be able to make it to cheerleading practice". What did she expect? These girls shoudn't get off with just a slap on the wrist, there needs to be some serious action taking against them.

I knew what you meant. Their identities are protected because they're legally minors or kids. Neither are inseparable.

I think for the mere fact they couldn't wait to get their "fame" on the internet, they did not care at all abt their identities. So why should the media hide their identities now?

It is a rhetorical question. I know the legal reason behind it.

No, I don't agree with that law either. If someone commits a crime, why can't their names be disclosed?

I think the media showing the videotape on every newscast defeats the entire purpose. All they're doing is giving the girls the attention they were craving when they filmed it.

the part that makes me sickest about the ordeal is that they just attacked the girl for no reason. I honestly think things would be so much better if they were going to stage a fight and film it on YouTube (since so many of the YouTube videos are staged) and she had been along with it, and the punches weren't as hard as they were, that'd be another thing. But to just attack a poor girl is another thing. A lot of the fight videos on YouTube are obviously staged and all parties involved were aware of their contribution.

I find it amusing that the mother of one of the attackers says the daughter got what was coming because on her Myspace, she afterwards made a comment that she's glad they all went to jail. Wow, she is so horrible for being happy that the people who assaulted her were arrested, isn't she?

Or a judge like Leslie Crocker Snyder, who was notorious in NYC as a no-bullsh*t judge who THREW the book at defendents when merited--a drug lord going before her got a 232 yr sentence. She was so well known for her harsh sentences that she had to have extra protection.

 god these kids know nothing. i would have known at seven or eight years old that the police don't take inmates to their extracurricular activities.

i want their identities released so i can find them on myspace and watch them get yelled at. out of curiosity i found the victim's profile (http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendid=312823289) and it's private, but she states in the public sections that she's ok.

http://www.local6.com/news/15831787/detail.htmlExpert Jill Gentry said the over exposure to violence in our culture may be behind the girls' apparently inability to feel empathy for the girl they are attacking.

While that may be a factor, she's leaving out another important reason for this increasing type of behavior- lack of a moral compass.
No moral compass, no reason not to do something like this.

I doubt it. Their actions don't warrant any sort of reward. Putting them on TV would only give them more attention.

I saw the girl's mother on t.v. and the police officer who got to them and put them in their place. I'm happy she is going to fully come back physically. I think she would be happy that people are rooting for her and she shouldn't be ashamed for what happened. Those a*&holes are going to get what they deserve. Victoria you were 1000x better than them before the incident and now your 10,000,000 now and forever will be.

I have to agree with you. Society isn't to blame for their actions. Let's blame them first, judging by their age, they should know right from wrong. MTV, Mortal Kombat or whatever isn't to blame, it's these dummies.

Second, let's for once, put blame on their parents. Everyone loves to blame outside sources but doesn't put the blame on where it needs to be. The home!
