View Full Version : Sacha Baron Cohen is causing trouble again

Sacha Baron Cohen’s alter ego Bruno has recently been causing trouble in Kansas, shooting the follow-up to Borat, titled Brüno: Delicious Journeys Through America for the Purpose of Making Heterosexual Males Visibly Uncomfortable in the Presence of a Gay Foreigner in a Mesh T-Shirt (now try to say that five times fast). Security was put on red alert when “a German film crew member” started “stripping down to tight shorts and dancing in the lobby of Wichita Airport” (see video of this at the bottom of the post). A church in Kansas also reported that a strange European camera crew showed up to their Easter play with the on air personality in chains.
Mike Walker of the National Enquirer reported the following on the Howard Stern Show on Thursday: Ben Affleck called comedian friend Sarah Silverman after completing a sit-down interview with a person he was told was a “very famous openly gay fashion journalist”. Ben called the interview “the weirdest sit-down he has ever had with a reporter” explaining that the interviewer’s (wholm he refered to as an “idiot”) first question was “How Do You Like ******s?” After a stunned silence, Silverman asked Affleck “Was this guy’s name Bruno?” Then and only then did Affleck actually realize that the whole thing was a gag. There is no doubt that this interview will be featured in the final cut, which is currently scheduled to hit theaters in October 2008.

Ireneparalegal 03-29-2008, 11:31 PM Aren't his 15 mins. up? I mean, what is it with this guy that people like? Seriously. I wish he'd just leave.
Cactus Jack 03-30-2008, 01:40 AM Sounds HILARIOUS!!!!!
TripperFan 03-30-2008, 11:35 AM I agree Irene.
A pretty sad commentary that more people have looked and commented on this thread about some no talent idiot who's career should have died when his Borat persona did but nobody seems to give a crap about a guy like Dith Pran dying of pancreatic cancer. Or that Robin Williams wife filed for divorce even.
Actually, I'm pretty disgusted lately at the threads that are getting attention - especially on the Chit Chat forum lately.
No wonder good members have left or only post sporadically now. This site has become very superficial and shallow. Not like it was 2 - 3 - 4 years ago. :(
I guess it's just me, but I do not find any of the Borat or Bruno shtick amusing. I just don't see what's funny about ambushing regular people on camera.
I do admire Cohen's dedication to the bit. He stayed in Borat mode not stop while making and promoting that movie. Not too many performers are willing to put that much into a character.

Good post. Seriously, I can't stand the guy. He could fall of the face of the earth and I wouldn't blink an eye. I think I might smirk. Can't the guy get a real job or just avoid the limelight? Why does he even get attention? That is a rhetorical question.
Dean Winchester 03-30-2008, 04:37 PM I personally think Cohen is a comedic genius... you're either going to get it or not. It's not fair to put him alongside the Jackasses and Tom Green's of the world, because unlike those two, Sacha is actually funny. Da Ali G Show was brilliant, and Borat was hilarious as well. I don't care if I'm the only one here who thinks so, but I can't wait for Bruno to see what shenanigans he gets into this time.

Ditto
Dean Winchester 03-30-2008, 05:05 PM I just don't get the hate. I've been a fan of Cohen's since Ali G first came on HBO several years ago. I am sorry if I've been looking forward to this movie since he announced it two years ago. I never saw The Killing Fields so I don't really know the story enough to be moved that the guy died, and with Robin Williams, funny guy and shame, but we hear about celebrity breakups every other week.

You noticed that too, huh?
Dean Winchester 03-31-2008, 01:33 AM out of curiosity, why is it that a Borat thread is where everyone comes to complain? I mean, if someone went into the the Dith Pran thread with "who cares? Sacha Baron Cohen's making a new movie!!!", I could understand the sentiment, but I don't get why suddenly this thread is where everyone complains about what they hate about SO in general. I mean, if you don't like Cohen's brand of comedy, don't go see Bruno when it comes out. But people like Jack and myself are still going to see it, sorry if there's a problem with the fact that some of us think the man is hysterically funny.
friendsfan77 03-31-2008, 01:47 AM I'm not that quite big a fan of Sacha yet but I do find him entertaining. I didn't think he was making any new movies or anything for a while.
I'm sorry to hear Robin Williams is getting divorced, it's sad to hear, but those things happen sometimes. And it's always a downer when a celebrity dies, but I know for me it's a bit difficult to reply to a thread like that if it's someone that I'm quite not familiar with. But that doesn't mean people don't care about either subject and are implying disrespect by not replying.

I agree. I wish he'd disappear, I thought he wasn't doing Borat anymore? His stupid comedy has been done already by the late Andy Kaufman, we don't need any wannabe's trying to copy what's already been done.

he's not doing Borat anymore, he's doing Bruno, a totally different character.
Anyways, Andy Kaufman isn't the alpha and omega at creating alter egos and assuming their identity, it's been done by other comics before and since as well.
By your same logic, musicians should just give up, I mean, all groups with guitarists and bassists and drummers are just following The Beatles lead, right? I've seen a lot of Andy's work, Andy and Sacha are completely different. Andy's antics were all staged, Sacha's is all improvised. The similarity between them is no different than when you consider KISS, Alice Cooper, David Bowie and Prince (not as blatant as the other three, but he went through the Camille period and the Christopher Tracy persona period, etc...) have all created musical alter egos in the past and publically assumed a specific identity to go with the work. Prince doing Camille and Gene Simmons putting the demon makeup on are really no more similar than Andy doing Tony Clifton and Sacha doing Borat.

Don't take it so personal if there are some people here who don't think Cohan is funny.
I'm not crazy about him, but i payed him a compliment, remember?

I was mainly referring to TripperFan's comment (I like Cohen, so shoot me!), and those who backed her up about how this thread represents everything wrong with SO. I'm not sorry I created this thread, and I'm not sorry if there was interest in it.
