Leona Lewis, who has taken the world by storm with her international hit single "Bleeding Love," has now conquered the U.S, claiming the Number One spot on the Billboard Hot 100 charts. It has been 21 years since a British female solo artist has achieved this milestone, not since Kim Wilde's cover of The Supremes' "You Keep Me Hangin' On" in 1987, according to Billboard Magazine. Leona's debut single "Bleeding Love" entered the Hot 100 chart six weeks ago, and each consecutive week has increased over 40 %, and in the last two weeks, the single has exploded with 80% increases each week.

Leona performed her worldwide smash hit "Bleeding Love" on the The Oprah Winfrey Show last Monday, March 17th and The Tonight Show with Jay Leno this past Monday, March 24th.

Lewis' debut album Spirit is set for release in the U.S. on April 8th. The U.S. album includes two new brand new songs from Akon and Madd Scientist and completely new versions and mixes of songs from the international release, featuring tracks by superstar collaborators Ryan Tedder, Dr. Luke, Ne-Yo, Max Martin, J.R. Rotem, Stargate, and more.

Leona is scheduled to perform on Good Morning America, Live with Regis and Kelly, The Ellen DeGeneres Show, Jimmy Kimmel Live, and MTV's "TRL" the week of release.

The video for "Bleeding Love," has scored the coveted video channel programs MTV's "Discover and Download" and Vh-1's "You Oughta Know, " and the track is the most played and most requested single at Top 40 and Rhythm Radio.

it's funny that the winner of the British Idol scored a US #1 single and Jordin Sparks hasn't even had a #1 single yet

Yippee! A Britgirl on the U.S. charts again!

Maybe this will lead to a rediscovery of British rock in America and lead to a long-overdue new British invasion. Once again, we need our British cousins to save us from our own awful pop!

Though, to be honest, I was hoping that the next Britgirl to have a number one hit here would be Joss Stone, who was only a newborn when Kim Wilde (daughter of singer Marty Wilde) had her big hit.

Let's look for more British rockers and popster s from places other than London and Liverpool. Wiltshire! So what's from Wiltshire? :D

(Actually, Wiltshire did give the Brits Dave Dee, Dozy, Beaky, Micky and Tich back in the 60s, though Americans couldn't be bothered. )

Sorry but her music is so over played here, it is making me hate her music.

with Leona hitting #1 in the US, I wonder why they haven't tried to break Shayne Ward (who won X-Factor in 2005) in America. I mean, if the housewife market is so barren that they're drooling over Clay and Josh, they would eat Shayne alive because he makes the same type of music but eclipses them in the looks dept. I don't get what the holdup is on breaking Shayne in America since Leona was broken in the states after one freaking hit in Europe.

I think Leona has more going for her than Shane, but who knows give it time :)

true, but if the housewives will melt over Josh Groban and Clay Aiken (both in my opinion are ugly)... imagine what would happen if Shayne appeared on Oprah or something. It would be Beatlemania for soccer moms

no Idol has. lol

anyway i dont really care for Bleeding Love, but im not a big fan of that kind of music. it'll be interesting to see if she can actually have a steady career here or if it'll just be a one-time thing, especially with all of the pimping Bleeding Love got.

There's barely even a retail market for singles anymore, with Billboard's Hot 100 singles chart determined largely by airplay. At least, that was true until this week, when Kelly Clarkson's double-A-sided single ''Before Your Love''/''A Moment Like This'' hit stores and promptly sold 236,000 copies, according to SoundScan. The ''American Idol'' winner registered what Billboard called the biggest jump in the history of the chart, rocketing from No. 52 to No. 1 in one week. ''We're in uncharted territory,'' Billboard chart director Geoff Mayfield said Wednesday, noting that Clarkson's was the first single to sell more than 200,000 copies since 1999.

In fact, it sold more than every album this week save one. That was Disturbed's ''Believe,'' which debuted at No. 1 on the album chart on sales of 283,625. The hard rockers ended the three-week chart reign of the Dixie Chicks' ''Home'', pushing it to second place with 168,350 copies sold. Avril Lavigne's ''Let Go'' was also pushed down one place to third, selling 131,975 units. Nelly's ''Nellyville'' held at No. 4 and sold 125,300 discs, while Eminem's ''The Eminem Show'' slipped two spots to No. 5 and moved 116,975 copies.

^ Kelly, Clay, Fantasia, Carrie and Taylor all had #1's with their inaugural AI single. Last year was the first time that didn't happen because they gave up releasing commercial singles so there was no Jordin or Blake song that got a big push to make it #1 like in previous years

I thought more than one Idol hit #1 but I knew for sure Clarkson did so.

what is so funny about Kelly is that her only US #1 isn't even one of her more well-known songs. Everyone knows Because Of You, Since U Been Gone, Breakaway, etc... but not that many people associate A Moment Like This

i wasnt counting the winners singles though. but yeah Jordin's was the only ones who didnt go #1. well apparently Ruben's didn't either but i didn't pay attention to Idol then lol.

it always surprised me that no Idol's single (aside from the winners' singles) ever went #1 on the hot 100. Jordin is actually coming pretty close with "No Air", it probably won't hit #1 but it's already the highest-charting single from a winners' debut.

I wonder what position she'd be at without Clive Davis and Simon Cowell holding her hand and shoving her down everyone's throats...

lol, I know. It's obvious Simon pulled strings to get her Americanized, he was never a big Shayne Ward fan, therefore while Shayne won, you won't see Simon whoring him in America and bringing him on Oprah, same goes with Leon Jackson, who just won last season on X-Factor.

She even beat out Amy Winehouse for a chart topper!
