Allergy Problems Can Lower Emotions

Allergies don't just make sensitive people itch and sneeze, they can also affect people's moods, according to a new survey.

A Harris Interactive survey of 1,000 allergy sufferers found that 62 percent of allergy sufferers say their allergies affect their mood. Fifty-one percent of sufferers feel annoyed, 48 percent feel irritable, and 42 percent feel frustrated.

Additionally, 22 percent say their allergies make them feel less attractive and 19 percent feel self-conscious.

However, people who suffer think that they don't get much sympathy. About half said their spouse or significant other doesn't think it is a serious health condition. They think even higher numbers of relatives, friends and coworkers see it as only somewhat serious or not serious.

A survey of 1,000 consumers -- some with allergies, some without -- found that 78 percent feel sorry for people who have allergies, but 36 percent believe that allergy sufferers overstate the severity of their symptoms and use them as an excuse to get out of something.

About 34 percent of allergy sufferers see a doctor for treatment when their symptoms are bothering them.

I have to agree with that. When my allergies or sinuses act up I get moody. I'm irritable and feel ugly. And when I complain about it people don't seem to care and when someone complains about their allergies I'm not too sympathetic towards them.

I'm not surprised. When you have a stuffy nose or are sneezing your head off, it is pretty difficult to be in a good mood.

I have allergy trouble's and I have to do nosie spree for my allergy.

I'm thankful that allergies are one thing I've never had to worry about. :)

I can see that. Allergies annoy the %#@$ out of me because I can't find a decent drug. And I can't go see an ENT through the free clinic unless I sit and wait 2 hours at the walk-in clinic. I'm not that sick!

I suffer from allergies year round, 365-366 days a year. I have been on zyrtec for about 3 full years now. Nothing i can do. I agree it has affected my mood, especially on days where i've either skipped a few doses or when i have been overexposed to grass, pets, and other things. I couldn't get my fiance to understand why i was in bad moods sometimes, until last week when he got some allergy thing and he was constantly coughing, sneezing and couldn't breathe. Now he knows :lol:

Zyrtec has helped take the edge off mine, but i still suffer from itchy eyes and a minor stuffy nose. If you haven't tried it, i reccomend trying it, and since the generic came out (since the regular is pretty expensive) i been using it. I get the same results.

Thank you Rob for that! :lol: I mean, c'mon now, I have seasonal allergies and it is so f***ing obvious that anytime you are under the weather or not feeling great, you will feel moody and irritable. :rolleyes: Geez. Same goes for when females have their monthly cycle, when they are pregnant, etc. I can't think of any ailment where one is HAPPY! duh!
