When Ann married Sam Royer, did the writers realize that they were making Barbara and husband Mark Royer, step brother and sister??? What dopes!

I loved the Sam Royer character. I detested the character was Barbara's father-in-law and step-father at the same time. ICK!!!!!!! Why couldn't Ann just meet Sam, date him and marry him, without the connection to Barbara's husband? Stupid indeed.

Exactly, Sam didn't have to be Mark's dad, he could've just been a neighbor in the building or something. I guess incest = comedy!

Ewwwww

I don't get it. Like we wouldn't accept the character unless he was related to someone? Not many liked the Sam Royer character, I wonder if that was the reason why? I liked him a lot. He suited Ann perfectly. He was soooo much better than David.

I'm one of those who disliked the Sam character. It really didn't have to do with being Mark's father (Although that didn't help), it had more to do with Sam being too bland.

Really? I didn't know that is how you felt abt the character. I guess I see it as we didn't need to have some outlandish character or some loud-mouth, someone over the top to be the husband of Ann. She was loud and brassy, she had enough sass for everyone.

Very true, but a personality of some kind would've been nice. ;)

Too dull for ya? ;) I know, spice is what you like. Sam could've used just a tad of that.

Hot and spicy...HOT DAMN!!!!!  ;)

Yeah, I hear ya, Sam could've been not so dull. Hell, he was better than David though. God, I couldn't stand David. I always felt like he was a lovesick high school guy rather than a man.

well, I think it would've been disgusting if Ann and Sam married first, and THEN Barbara and Mark hooked up. But vice versa, I don't think it was so bad. It's no different than Mark/Becky and David/Darlene on Roseanne IMO

similar to what happened on Fresh prince when the writers had Lisa's father propose to will's mother-lol

Haven't seen those episodes in years but I suppose after playing Dr. Johnny Fever, they wanted to give Hesseman a different character to play?

Out of the men that Ann was with Sam was my favorite. I could not stand Nick. I was so glad they did not go another season with those two. No chemistry between those two.

I agree 100% about David...he was just so CLINGY (plus I've known a couple of men just like him - shudder). They could've made Sam Mark's uncle or cousin if they'd had to make them relatives. Of Howard Hesseman's three well-known characters - Sam was dullsville compared to Charlie Moore (Head of the Class) and of course, Dr. Johnny Fever (WKRP). Did anyone else see him as one of Bob's group therapy patients on The Bob Newhart Show?? Hilarious!!

I like David. When it comes to matters of the heart, I'm still a lovesick high school guy and not a man. I can relate to poor David.

Right now the second season is being aired here in Chicago. Infact, it ended last Sunday and season three will begin next weekend. As much as I loved the first season, I thought that the second was better. I have been taping all the season two episodes incase they never make it to DVD...which I hope that they will.
