Ocoee Toddler Dies After Finding Gun In Home, Shooting Himself

OCOEE, Fla. -- Monday, Ocoee police detectives said they may decide whether someone should be charged in the death of a 22-month-old boy. The toddler found a gun in his home early Sunday morning and shot himself in the face.

On top of losing his son, the boy's father may face charges if police determine the .38 caliber gun was not properly secured. Residents of the quiet Admiral Point subdivision said they can't believe something like this could happen.

It was a tragedy police in Ocoee said could have been avoided. A 22-month-old boy found his father's revolver and then shot himself in the face.

"I saw 10 police cars and four ambulances and I had just seen the residents of the home talking to police and everything," said Jarvis Wheeler, a neighbor.

The accident happened early Sunday morning. Devastated family members carried the wounded toddler desperately hoping someone would do something to save his life.

"The fire department and EMT's responded and attempted to revive the child. The child was dead on the scene," said Bill Richardson of the Ocoee Police Department.

The baby's mother wasn't home at the time of the shooting. Detectives questioned the baby's father to try to figure out how the toddler managed to get a hold of the .38 caliber handgun and why the safety lock hadn't been installed.

"The family has advised us it was an accident. The child retrieved the gun while everyone was sleeping," Richardson added.

Ocoee police said there was a strong possibility that the medical examiner's report could be released Monday afternoon.

This should've never happened; I will never understand how people can be so stupid,
and careless especially when there are young children around.

This story is crazy. I'm all for people owning guns but do they not realize if they have a toddler in the house, they have to put the guns on high shelves or in a gun safe? THAT'S WHY THEY WERE MADE, PEOPLE!!!! Stupid! I hope all these "people" get charged. They should have have put the baby in his crib.

ohno: that is so sad. that's why when people own guns they need to put it in a place the child can't access. and it should be in a case, that is locked. that child should not have gotten his hands of the gun. that's such a tragedy.
