View Full Version : Name a spin-off that you think is better than the show it spun off from itself howierules86 03-09-2008, 12:50 PM I'll start: Cory In The House is better than That's So Raven. How about you? Mikado 03-09-2008, 01:06 PM Facts of Life was better than Diff'rent Strokes pretty much the only one I can think of Brian Damage 03-09-2008, 01:14 PM This one is debateable, because I LOVE Cheers, but I like Frasier slightly better. waichingliu81 03-09-2008, 03:18 PM i preferred the parkers over moesha and the jeffersons over all in the family Brian Damage 03-09-2008, 03:27 PM i preferred the parkers over moesha and the jeffersons over all in the family I also preferred Good Times over Maude. ;) treky 03-09-2008, 04:01 PM I prefered "ALL IN THE FAMILY" over all it's spinoffs: "GOOD TIMES, "MAUDE", "THE JEFFERSONS", GLORIA", "ARCHIE BUNKERS PLACE" Dean Winchester 03-09-2008, 04:09 PM Facts Of Life for sure As an adult, Laverne And Shirley is also far less cringeworthy than Happy Days IMO vtunie 03-09-2008, 04:31 PM One more vote for Laverne and Shirley. AfterM*A*S*H. (Yes, I know. :) -- I mean in places) JulieSomoski 03-09-2008, 04:32 PM Facts of Life was WAY better than Diff'rent Strokes. It's no contest when you compare the two today. I also liked The Jeffersons slightly more than All in the Family. Both were great shows, but The Jeffersons holds up better today than All in the Family. Another one that's close is Soap and Benson, but I think Benson has the slight edge over Soap, just because it wasn't so random like Soap was. HuntingtonM15 03-09-2008, 04:41 PM I also agree with Laverne & Shirley. megamanj2004 03-09-2008, 05:10 PM The Facts of Life - b/c their stories in their much later season were more relevant than Diff'rent Strokes's later seasons were. Empty Nest - When I was a kid watching this show back-to-back w/ The Golden Girls, I actually preferred Empty Nest over TGG, b/c Empty Nest actually made me laugh more than TGG does at times. Plus, it had more depth and variety in their characters than TGG does at times. The Jeffersons - I watched this more than I watched All in the Family b/c 1). like another poster said, it holds a little better than AitF. Sanford (yes, the March 1980-81 version believe it or not!) - Despite the fat jokes and the fact that Demond Wilson was nowhere to be found at the time of this version, this was actually the 1st version of the Sanford family I watched before I even heard of Sanford and Son. And then watching this version and Sanford and Son, I thought that Sanford seemed a little more lighthearted and slightly less racy than w/ Sanford and Son was at times. Benson - I thought that Soap got boring sometimes, so I watched Benson a little more than Soap. The Pakers - I liked this show more than I liked Moesha. Plus, it took Moesha quite a long time to get off the ground, unlike this show. comedyfreak 03-09-2008, 05:51 PM Frasier- I liked this show way more than Cheers, the characters are more likeable and the show is simply funnier too, and even Bulldog was less annoying and funnier than Cliff Claven. Dean Winchester 03-09-2008, 05:56 PM one I am a little surprised hasn't been mentioned yet... The Simpsons. I think there's a lot of people who like it better than Tracy Ullman Show Mr. Television 03-09-2008, 06:39 PM one I am a little surprised hasn't been mentioned yet... The Simpsons. I think there's a lot of people who like it better than Tracy Ullman Show I think a lot of people forget that it was actually a spin-off from The Tracy Ullman Show. Ireneparalegal 03-09-2008, 06:41 PM HAPPY DAYS. It was a sort of a spin-off from LOVE AMERICAN STYLE. FACTS OF LIFE over DIFF'RENT STROKES. TV DVD Fan 03-09-2008, 08:16 PM In some ways I like LAVERNE AND SHIRLEY better than HAPPY DAYS--- mainly because it had more sight gags and stuff which I like. But for nostalgia and strength of the cast I liked HAPPY DAYS better. I like FACTS OF LIFE better than DIFF'RENT STROKES, but I still like that show too. FRASIER almost doesn't even seem like a CHEERS spin-off. They're two entirely different shows with one common link: Frasier. I love them both but I probably still like CHEERS just a little better. dlemond 03-09-2008, 09:00 PM Another vote for Laverne & Shirley. Also, though All in the Family may be a better show, I much prefer The Jeffersons. An 80s Guy 03-09-2008, 10:05 PM The Facts Of Life was better than Diff'rent Strokes Maude And The Jeffersons better than All In The Family Laverne And Shirley A Lot better than Happy Days icecream 03-09-2008, 10:23 PM my 5 favorite spin-offs 1. Frasier Although Cheers was a good show, Frasier was much better. 2. Benson I've never seen Soap, but from what I've heard Benson was more family friendly. 3. Happy Days never saw Love, American Style 4. Lou Grant I just recently discovered The Mary Tyler Moore Show and Lou Grant. They're both good shows, but I like LG a little bit better. It was definitely different spinning off a drama from a comedy, but if anyone could do that it was Lou Grant. 5. The Andy Griffith Show the first spin-off in TV history I never saw the show it spun-off from (The Danny Thomas Show) Furienna 03-10-2008, 01:06 AM I haven't watched "Perfect strangers", but I really like its spin-off "Family Matters". Pavan 03-10-2008, 01:30 AM I don't know, I like many of the original shows better. Perfect Strangers, Happy Days, All in the Family, Diff'rent Strokes, Soap etc. I do like the spin-offs of those shows (Family Matters, The Jeffersons, Maude, Facts of Life, Benson...well never liked Laverne & Shirley and Mork & Mindy much) though...just not as much as the originals. Maybe Good Times is slightly better than Maude, though. Zoneboy 03-10-2008, 02:13 AM Hello Larry over Differn't Strokes The Misadventures of Sheriff Lobo over BJ and the Bear Rock and Roll Jeopardy over Jeopardy Wait Till Your Father Gets Home over Love American Style S.W.A.T over The Rookies Lorimar Television 03-10-2008, 06:11 PM I haven't watched "Perfect strangers", but I really like its spin-off "Family Matters". Here's a clip of an episode, featuring Carl and Harriet: http://youtube.com/watch?v=lZ39lywANPs&feature=related Mikado 03-10-2008, 07:11 PM I just thought of another, the Andy Griffith show was better than Make Room for Daddy (AKA The Danny Thomas Show) from which it was spun BensonFan 03-10-2008, 07:37 PM This one is debateable, because I LOVE Cheers, but I like Frasier slightly better. Same here, and I like Benson more than Soap, although I do like Soap. (These two shows don't seem like one was spun-off from the other, though..kind of weird.) vtunie 03-10-2008, 07:38 PM Here's a few more I think are better, some listed already: Jeffersons > AITF Pinky And The Brain > Animaniacs (ok, it's animated, but still a sitcom) Tonight Show > Broadway Open House (ok, not a sitcom, but....) A Different World > Cosby Show Hello Larry > Diff'rent Strokes Absolutely Fabulous > French & Sanders Star Trek TNG > Star Trek (sorry) Pavan 03-10-2008, 07:57 PM Hello Larry was a show that just crossed-over with Diff'rent Strokes, not a spinoff. Furienna 03-10-2008, 08:01 PM Here's a clip of an episode, featuring Carl and Harriet: http://youtube.com/watch?v=lZ39lywANPs&feature=related Oh yeah! "Perfect Strangers" took place on a newspaper! vtunie 03-10-2008, 08:05 PM Hello Larry was a show that just crossed-over with Diff'rent Strokes, not a spinoff. The whole cast of Diff'rent Strokes appeared about a third of the way through. And Diff'rent Strokes was definitely the more popular show in 1979. Doesn't that count as a spinoff, even if after the fact? Mrgman 03-10-2008, 08:07 PM Yeah I like family matters slightly better then perfect strangers Zoneboy 03-10-2008, 08:57 PM Hello Larry was a show that just crossed-over with Diff'rent Strokes, not a spinoff. Damn, For nearly 30 years I thought it was a spinoff and every tv book I've ever read has said it was a spinoff plus Wikipedia says it's a spinoff but then again Wiki also claims that Twilight Zone is a spinoff of Desilu Playhouse. dawsongirl 03-10-2008, 11:01 PM I think a lot of people forget that it was actually a spin-off from The Tracy Ullman Show. Exactly what I was going to say. That alone says it all. dawsongirl 03-10-2008, 11:08 PM but then again Wiki also claims that Twilight Zone is a spinoff of Desilu Playhouse.  Inspiration maybe. Or where we first saw the genius of Rod Serling, but definetly NOT a spinoff. But I guess I can see where people get that. If Happy Days can spin-off an anthology show like Love, American Style, then that one lone TZ-ish episode of DP could be responsible for TZ. Ireneparalegal 03-10-2008, 11:09 PM Damn, For nearly 30 years I thought it was a spinoff and every tv book I've ever read has said it was a spinoff plus Wikipedia says it's a spinoff but then again Wiki also claims that Twilight Zone is a spinoff of Desilu Playhouse. I used to think Good Times was a spin-off of Maude, so don't feel bad. ;) Did I say I liked HAPPY DAYS over LOVE AMERICAN STYLE? I also loved LAVERNE & SHIRLEY a little more than HAPPY DAYS. We didn't have to see Chachi enter the scene and hear that loud roar from the audience. blairjotootienat 03-10-2008, 11:27 PM And I'll raise you one spinoff - Nurses was much funnier than Empty Nest. I found Empty Nest boring and un-funny. Sorry Kristy and Dinah. Zoneboy 03-11-2008, 01:09 AM Hello Larry was a show that just crossed-over with Diff'rent Strokes, not a spinoff. I haven't seen either show in years so I decided to look up the original broadcast dates and you're correct, It wasn't a spinoff. I guess my memory isn't what it used to be. friendsfan77 03-11-2008, 01:36 AM My biggest ones are already listed: FOL over DS, Moesha over The Parkers, Laverne & Shirley over Happy Days, Jeffersons over AITF I find The Parkers to be much funnier than Moesha. FOL could change with time for the most part better than DS to me and is much funnier. Laverne & Shirley is still always funny to me, while Happy Days has about zero rewatchability for me. The Jeffersons is funnier to me than AITF. megamanj2004 03-11-2008, 02:46 AM And I'll raise you one spinoff - Nurses was much funnier than Empty Nest. I found Empty Nest boring and un-funny. Sorry Kristy and Dinah. Especially the first two seasons. Why did they have to go and make Loni Anderson the star and have her business owning the hospital and on top of that, her character couldn't run a hosptial worth a damn. Shame that Nurses was cancelled after three seasons, b/c I also wanted to see David Rasche w/ a show that lasted more than 2 seasons, especially since I liked his scheming character on that show, since his character is almost a tiny throwback to his Sledge Hammer character. dawsongirl 03-11-2008, 10:59 PM And I'll raise you one spinoff - Nurses was much funnier than Empty Nest. I found Empty Nest boring and un-funny. Sorry Kristy and Dinah. I agree. I liked Nurses. Buffyboy323 03-12-2008, 10:59 PM Star Trek: Deep Space Nine (Star Trek: The Next Generation) Law & Order: SVU (Law & Order) Torchwood (Dr. Who) The Honeymooners (The Jackie Gleason Show) Laverne & Shirley (Happy Days) Mama's Family (The Carol Burnett Show) The Facts Of Life (Diff'rent Strokes) Family Matters (Perfect Strangers) Frasier (Cheers) thecroc 03-13-2008, 08:06 AM another vote for Frasier and Star Trek: The Next Generation over the originals santaburger 03-21-2008, 01:12 AM Laverne & Shirley > Happy Days > Love American Style Now if only there had been a Lenny & Squiggy spinoff, perhaps I could have continued with this inequality.... icecream 04-20-2015, 02:56 PM NCIS > JAG Star Trek: the Next Generation > Star Trek original CSI: Cyber > the other CSIs -Whether this is a spin-off could be debatable. It has the CSI name but I don't think even had a backdoor pilot on the others. my original post in this thread http://www.sitcomsonline.com/boards/showpost.php?p=3853766&postcount=19 I now like Lou Grant a lot more than Mary Tyler Moore. Unfortunately won't be able to see it much since it's been discontinued on DVD. :( I would love to have Antenna TV or one of the Encore stations pick up Lou Grant. bmasters9 04-20-2015, 03:05 PM From what I've seen of Trapper John, M.D. (not much), it looks like it's far better than M*A*S*H, IMO. yankeesrj12 04-20-2015, 03:51 PM NCIS > JAG Star Trek: the Next Generation > Star Trek original CSI: Cyber > the other CSIs -Whether this is a spin-off could be debatable. I believe CSI: Cyber aired its backdoor pilot during CSI in April of 2014. Bonniegirl 04-20-2015, 04:05 PM Laverne and Shirley better than Happy Days Rhoda better than Mary Tyler Moore Jefferson's better than All in the family UMFaninMD 04-20-2015, 09:02 PM Just the Ten of Us Benson The Jeffersons Laverne & Shirley Trapper John, M.D. Mama's Family veggie-tari-jenn 04-20-2015, 10:00 PM I liked Frasier way better than Cheers factsoflife 04-21-2015, 01:49 AM I think a lot of people forget that it was actually a spin-off from The Tracy Ullman Show. I think a lot of people have probably never even seen or heard of The Tracy Ullman Show. SitcomsOffline 04-21-2015, 10:21 AM I like the first 3 seasons of "The Game" better than Girlfriends. I'll take Frasier over Cheers any time. More likeable characters and I despised Carla. That ugly troll. My other favorite spin offs are Facts of Life and A Differant World. They have aged better and were more relevant. Gemini_89 04-06-2016, 07:17 AM I enjoyed Saved By The Bell more than Good Morning Miss Bliss. wickedmountain 04-10-2016, 04:38 PM If anyone else remembers this, I'll have a stroke: Pete and Gladys over December Bride I remember them both lol Edward216 04-11-2016, 01:45 AM I'd rate Diff'rent Stroke and The Facts Of Life about the same really. Frasier is usually better than Cheers. But Cheers has some pretty funny episodes too. And all of the Star Trek spinoffs were better than the original Star Trek series. Ed. king of comedy 12-29-2018, 10:16 PM I liked Facts of Life better. AMackII 12-29-2018, 10:33 PM Knots Landing was also twice as better Christopher 12-30-2018, 06:58 AM The Facts of Life Melrose Place (even though I was the targeted demographic for 90210, this show was more fun to watch) Family Matters Law & Order SVU The Jeffersons Maude Laverne & Shirley There's probably more but these are the only spinoff's that stand out to me that I find better than the parent show they spun from. JamesG 12-30-2018, 10:56 AM Xena: Warrior Princess over Hercules: The Legendary Journeys Angel over Buffy the Vampire Slayer MA 12-30-2018, 11:00 AM Frasier, but I still like Cheers though |
