View Full Version : Censorship
LuLu Rogers 03-08-2008, 10:01 PM I've been wondering about this for a long time, so I thought I would get your opinions on this.
I was watching an interview with Alan Alda earlier and he was talking about Network Censorship during M*A*S*H. He recalled a scene he had written where Margaret comes into the VIP tent to talk to Sidney. She refuses to talk to him until he covers up the jock strap he has lying in a pile of laundry. The network wouldn't let him show the jock strap or even a pile of clothes that might imply it was there. They also refused to let them refer to it as a jock strap. In the final scene, Margaret tells him that she won't talk to him until he gets rid of "that thing" and points below the camera. Sidney then looks below the camera and says, "What, the athletic supporter?" That's the only way the Censors would allow it, yet, in MANY episodes of M*A*S*H we see women's bras, underwear and stockings hanging from clothes lines. Alan was laughing at how crazy that was.
In today's movie and such, you see a good bit of female nudity. No, I don't mean porn or adult films, I mean regular movies, but how many do you see with male full frontal nudity? Very few.
My view on this is the "All or Nothing" principle. If you can show female, you should be able to show male, if you can't show male then you shouldn't be showing female.
No, I'm not looking for more nudity in movies or tv, so just drop that from your mind right now. I'm simply saying that if you allow one, why not the other?
How do you guys feel about this?
Mikado 03-09-2008, 12:28 AM You may think this sounds sexist but, think about it...women dont mind looking at half naked women, but most guys dont want to look at other men....if you put a lot of male nudity, a lot of men will tune out and that will hurt ratings.

Yep, that sounds pretty sexist to me. Not all women enjoy seeing other women naked all the time, it can be kind of degrading sometimes. That's a pretty big assumption there.
If you're going to allow one, you should allow the other. Male viewers shouldn't rule the world.
vtunie 03-09-2008, 12:36 AM This goes back a very long way, I think. I think there've been many more female breasts and even loins depicted than the male genitals, in Western art of the last 1500 years.
I suppose it's because the erect phallus was and is a sacred symbol in the many of the pagan religions, so a christian society would be very careful to stay away from depicting the male organs even in the unengorged state.
Consider the (pre-christian) wall frescoes in Pompeii. Their depictions of female nudes (even in ritual flagellation) have been in art textbooks for the last 200 years; but the totemic images of Priapus (the MALE demigod of fertility, retribution, and several other things, I can't remember which), always shown with enormous genitals in full view, have been kept behing locked doors.

 I appreciate you being objective about it.
Dutabi84 03-09-2008, 01:08 AM I think part of the deal is aesthetics. The curviness of a shapely female is overall probably more pleasing to the eye than those things that we carry around that look like they belong on some frightening mythical beast.

How do you guys feel about this?
I fully agree with you. In fact, i was just thinking about this a while back when i saw some movies in the theatre. I saw 27 dresses and another one and i can't think what it was, but get this, in each of these movies, they had a scene where a guy was in the room and the woman was getting undressed for bed or whatever. I dont know what it is about these scenes, but they always show a female getting undressed down to her bra and panties, and they make damn sure to get her to stay with them off as long as possible while having a conversation with the male (male being either a gay friend or a husband). I am sick of seeing this, i'm no prude, but i'm definitely not for women stupid enough to undress for the sake of drowning in a male audience. But how often do we see a male getting undressed for bed down to his underwear? I mean yeah, maybe once or twice, but not nearly enough as much as a woman.
I know that guys may say they dont like to see another man naked, but i can honestly tell you from my straight female opinion that i do not like to see another woman's breasts or her bra and panties. I am at the very least interested in what is underneath a woman's clothes. I'm no homophobe, its just that i'm not into it. So I think movies need to either drop showing a woman in her undies (or nude) or start showing a man naked, groin area and all. I'm with you, it's gonna be all or nothing. I'm tired of all the sexism in this century of all things.

You mean everyone MALE loves boobs. ;)

Well, I don't mind seeing female nudity, I just think that if I can handle seeing female nudity, men should be able to handle seeing male nudity. Tit for Tat.
junecleaver 03-09-2008, 01:21 AM You mean everyone MALE loves boobs. ;)
I dont see what's so good about boobs. I'm glad my fiance isn't a boob man, i'll just say he goes for the more functional parts, lol.

That's right. They can do what i do when a naked woman is on, cringe.
PlayOn 03-09-2008, 01:23 AM LuLu, since you don't like sexism, don't watch 'Good Luck Chuck.' The star of the movie herself said it was sexiest (why she signed on to it, I don't know.) I saw it last month and I was kicking my own self in the ass, which you need to be friggin' double jointed to do. lol.
Of course I did that, after seeing the boob-age.
;)

 Men!

dawsongirl 03-09-2008, 02:21 AM Most of the time nudity isn't even an essential part of the plot, so it's only thrown in there for shock value or just to say "look what we can get away with." Dumb. I think people will let their imaginations take them pretty far anyway, so implying nudity seems to me to be the better way to go.

The male junk is nasty to look at, period. I see nothing exciting about boobs either, but they are nicer looking.

You always take the words out of my mouth dawsongirl, lol. Now days, you can't get a movie with imagination. It seems back in the days when movies were made (where you really couldn't get away with much nudity etc) they were wayyy more creative and imaginitive. Especially 80's movies, which are my favorites.

Hahaha. Good Luck Chuck was a movie you can tell was probably entirely made by sex starved (because usually when you aren't getting any is when you think about it constantly) men. The story line was OK but gross, because i think most women would rather be single the rest of their lives then sleep with a guy who probably has numerous STD's and catch a few.

I agree. TV seems the same way. Constant sex jokes is not a sign of creativity...that's just looking dirty jokes up on the internet. Sex is not the thing that sells everyone.
PlayOn 03-09-2008, 03:03 AM Now that I think of it, we did see ONE male nudity shot on TV. Shipowitz (I think it's Shipowitz anyway) did the infamous butt shot on NYPD Blue. I was young when that show came on, but I heard about.
Janice 03-09-2008, 03:09 AM Oh well, I guess before Janice censors this whole thread...

Nope, I don't censor anything. All I do is enforce TJ's rules.
Max Whittaker 03-09-2008, 03:15 AM I don't want to see naked men.
But I do see the double standard.

LOL, I didnt know jessica Alba said that, I do know that Katherine Heigl said a similar thing about Knocked Up ( which is AWESOME by the way, check it out!)

That's my point, the double standard. It's not the actual nudity that bothers me, it's the double standard.

At least I think it was GLC. If you want to check it out, it's in the Movie forum. You may have to go back a-ways.
Mikado 03-09-2008, 04:56 AM That's my point, the double standard. It's not the actual nudity that bothers me, it's the double standard.
But, that wasnt your original Q...you wanted to know WHY theres more woman flesh showing and the reason is, if you put naked men onscreen, men wont watch, thus less ratings and less money.....boobs=$$$$$$$, men parts =$ (And Hollywood revolves around $$$$$$$) it's not a double standard so much, as a business decision. (If it makes you feel any better, female models are much higher paid than their male counterparts, for the same reason....bet those women dont complain about the double standard)

unless some gay guys do. no offence
sunshinefizzy 03-09-2008, 10:11 AM I can see the double standard. At the same time though, I agree with what's being said about boobs being softer and easier to look at. I'm a heterosexual female and I think those male things are as ugly as sin.
*ClassicPinUp* 03-09-2008, 10:53 AM Now that I think of it, we did see ONE male nudity shot on TV. Shipowitz (I think it's Shipowitz anyway) did the infamous butt shot on NYPD Blue. I was young when that show came on, but I heard about.
And don't forget the TV show Oz! That's when most women fell in love with Christopher Meloni (aka Detective Elliot Stabler from Law & Order: SVU). I think that man's package got more camera time then anything else on that show. And that show was all about male nudity
Zebra 3 03-09-2008, 12:26 PM What he said...
It's simple: Everyone loves boobs. The end.
junecleaver 03-09-2008, 02:20 PM Male parts are gross, but i think if everyone doesn't want to see a man, then quit showing the ladie's boobs. Unless the movie has something to do with nudity, then it is entirely unneccessary to show anything. For example, a show like sex and the city, now i dont know anything about that show but i kinda want to see the movie. I am prepared to see nudity (if sex and the city even shows it) because the title is "Sex and the city". Now if i'm going to see a regular romantic type comedy, i dont expect to see a woman's boobs and i dont desire to see them. I wish they would put nudity where it BELONGS instead of adding it into movies in which it has nothing to do with the story line. Even when a couple is having sex, I dont need to see anything to know they are. Just show the couple under the covers with no nudity and that's it, we get that they are doing it.
junecleaver 03-09-2008, 02:23 PM But, that wasnt your original Q...you wanted to know WHY theres more woman flesh showing and the reason is, if you put naked men onscreen, men wont watch, thus less ratings and less money.....boobs=$$$$$$$, men parts =$ (And Hollywood revolves around $$$$$$$) it's not a double standard so much, as a business decision. I just wish women who did REAL jobs could get paid more. This must be about the only job in the world that lets women get paid more than men. At least this is true in my area, not sure about other parts of the U.S.
Mikado 03-09-2008, 05:04 PM You may be right about that......here in Canada, women are supposedly paid equal pay for equal work by law, but, even here, female models are better paid than male counterparts, and that may be the only time you can say that.
