View Full Version : Has there ever been a Sitcom that still succeded after adding a CHILD?
TVFactFan 03-02-2008, 05:31 PM I'm asking because I wonder why so many other producers of TV show tried to do the same thing when it rarely works? Like Good Times Failed after adding a child in the 70's so why was this attempt to add a child repeated so many times in the 80's and 90"s? What show actually benefited from adding a child?
friendsfan77 03-02-2008, 05:42 PM I liked Andy on Facts of Life, and the show was still doing well with the addition of him, it lasted for three more seasons. Pippa in the last year I could have done without though.
Mikado 03-02-2008, 06:52 PM I dont think adding Andy hurt Family Ties (What killed it was NICK :barf: and moving the show to Sundays so Cos could get the time slot for his overated spin-off show "A different World" :barf: :barf:)
PlayOn 03-02-2008, 07:22 PM They added Joey to 'All in the Family.' It was still successful.
Brieannas21 03-02-2008, 08:24 PM Penny didn't kill GT the lack of a mom and dad is what killed Good Times, plus a lot of the episodes just sucked.
Hanging with Mr.Cooper was great even after Raven was added also Step by Step was still ok after they add Lilly.

Lets not forget when Raven played Olivia on The Cosby Show. She was the best, IMO. I'm glad they added her.
Ireneparalegal 03-02-2008, 09:00 PM Hey, you took my question and made it into a thread. NOT FAIR!!!!!
J/K
Joey on AITF to me is an exception because he was a child whose parents were on the show and it wasn't like we seen him a lot in the episodes, like Olivia on the Cosby Show who rambled on and on like a damn adult. Or like the twins born to John Stamos' character on Full House. Just in your face and not necessary.
Here was my response on the Cosby Show thread regarding the show jumping the shark after season 5:
Has there been any show where a sitcom was a success AFTER the introduction of a little kid? Olivia, in my opinion, is the epitomy of the worst addition ever on a sitcom regarding little kids. Not to mention the way she was introduced has got to be the all time worst.
Brieannas21 03-02-2008, 09:52 PM Lets not forget when Raven played Olivia on The Cosby Show. She was the best, IMO. I'm glad they added her.
I Agree, Olivia didn't bother me either, I liked her on the show along with the other add ons. Elvin is the character that I couldn't stand at all
Ireneparalegal 03-02-2008, 09:53 PM Elvin did act like a child so I add him to the "child list."
Buffyboy323 03-02-2008, 10:27 PM They added Joey to 'All in the Family.' It was still successful.
And depending on how you look at it (whether it counts as the same show or not), Stephanie was an added child character that lasted four or five years.
The awful Nikki and Alex on Full House lasted for four seasons.
Dean Winchester 03-02-2008, 10:54 PM Gimme A Break did just fine with the addition of Joey. The show didn't get hurt until Dolph Sweet died in 1985, and that was two seasons after they had Joey in.
Family Ties and Facts Of Life were still watchable when the two Andy's came on, but I do think both shows had both peaked before they joined, but I think it was age in their cases, they were both far more watchable than Diff'rent Strokes was when Sam came in at least.
TVFactFan 03-02-2008, 10:58 PM Penny didn't kill GT the lack of a mom and dad is what killed Good Times, plus a lot of the episodes just sucked.

Hangin With Mr. Cooper was never in the Top 30 again after adding Raven so the show did suffer

LOL-we are a team Irene in keping up the activity on the board

What was wrong with Elvin?
Mikado 03-02-2008, 11:04 PM He was a bit(?) of a Chauvinist Solomon
TVFactFan 03-02-2008, 11:06 PM He was a bit(?) of a Chauvinist Solomon
Only in season 1
Ireneparalegal 03-02-2008, 11:08 PM Elvin was thrown in so that Claire could give a few good licks regarding how he thinks what women should and shouldn't be. How Sondra ended up with someone like that I will never know. I can't imagine that strong-headed girl would want someone who was chauvinistic. I can see her with someone like her father, but Cliff was never chauvinistic.
So, Elvin was a terrible child.
Brieannas21 03-03-2008, 12:53 AM Hangin With Mr. Cooper was never in the Top 30 again after adding Raven so the show did suffer
Raven was on the show for 4 out of the 5 seasons that it was on. So the show didn't do that bad after she was added. It was better JMO
Brieannas21 03-03-2008, 12:54 AM He was a bit(?) of a Chauvinist Solomon
EXACTLY, Thank You
Brieannas21 03-03-2008, 12:55 AM Only in season 1
he was insensitive and stupid
Ireneparalegal 03-03-2008, 12:57 AM Maybe calling Elvin a child is giving him too much credit. A child wouldn't be insensitive and stupid. Thanx Brie for enlightening me. ;)
Elvin WAS A DOG!!!!
Furienna 03-03-2008, 09:01 PM Hey, hey, hey! I actually LIKED Elvin! He might have said things, that were the wrong things to say, but he was basically a good guy. And really, Sondra really liked him, and she probably knew him better than what you do.

I know enough of that turkey that I wouldn't want him for my husband. Too much work trying to change a guy who thinks that a woman's job is at home. Not to mention all the other stupid stuff he said. Sondra could push him around, that's why she had him.
Besides, it is only a character, he is not real, just like all tv characters.
Mr. Television 03-03-2008, 09:32 PM They just put Elvin on TCS so Clair would have another person to put down. He was an idiot.
Mikado 03-03-2008, 09:34 PM :happyface Hey, hey, hey! I actually LIKED Elvin! He might have said things, that were the wrong things to say, but he was basically a good guy. And really, Sondra really liked him, and she probably knew him better than what you do.Well, I'm a GUY and even I thought Elvin was a chauvinistic, egotistical JERK!
Ireneparalegal 03-03-2008, 09:35 PM They just put Elvin on TCS so Clair would have another person to put down. He was an idiot.
 That's similar to what I said on the previous page.
There was no reason whatsoever other than to have that Claire play off of him. If Sondra had married a "real man", there would be no fun in that.
Let me add, the dude was FUGLY.

It's funny because Sandra who was the smart daughter ended up with Elvin and Denise who was...ummm.....less than smart ended up with a better man in Martin. How did that happen?

I was waiting for a ROSEANNE type finale where we find out it was all a story written by Cliff. Martin really was Sondra's spouse.
Remember how the actor who played Martin was first shown as Sondra's boyfriend? They should have kept it that way. ;)
Furienna 03-03-2008, 09:46 PM Oh, COME ON! Elvin wasn't that bad! It was just that in the beginning, he had the misfortune of saying the wrong things at the wrong times... And if smart Princeton graduate Sondra could stick with this guy and even marry him, I think you could stop bashing him too. In the beginning, it did feel like he was just added on the show, so there could be some arguements between men and women and yada yada. But they even stopped that, or at least cut down on it. So what the heck? Give the guy a break! Sondra was the one, who would look for petty little things to fight about anyway. And maybe this is because I'm conservative, but I'm a girl, and I still wouldn't argue over most of the things Elvin did.

In the beginning, it did feel like he was just added on the show, so there could be some arguements between men and women and yada yada. But they even stopped that, almost. So what the heck? Give the guy a break! Sondra was the one, who looked for petty little things to fight about anyway. And maybe this is because I'm conservative, but I'm a girl, and I wouldn't mind most of the things Elvin did.
You need to stop making arguments out of something we are making light of. We know the characters are not real. Just like Jaimee Foxworth's character on Family Matters is not real, which is why it was no big deal to get rid of her.
We are having a fun discussion and are not bashing a real live person. Geez. Get real.
Furienna 03-03-2008, 09:52 PM Get real yourself. :p
Ireneparalegal 03-03-2008, 09:54 PM Oh wow. You need to stop interjecting your feelings for tv characters. If you don't like what we say THEN DON'T READ THIS THREAD. Simple as that. How much more simple can it be said?
Mikado 03-03-2008, 10:00 PM ok time out girls ...pulls Irene back to a neutral corner ;)
(How I wish ;) )
Ireneparalegal 03-03-2008, 10:02 PM ok time out girls ...pulls Irene back to a neutral corner ;)
(How I wish ;) )
Now don't try and tell me that Elvin is a real live person now. The rest of us live in the real world. ;)
Furienna 03-03-2008, 10:03 PM But for Heaven's sake!
Jaimee Foxworth never got a chance. She was treated like crap. Those people could have worked just a little bit with the Judy character. They could have given her some plots. But no, they just threw a poor thirteen-year-old actress out instead. And she went into drugs and porn. This is a tragedy, nothing to joke and laugh about.
And about Elvin, please stop bashing him! There ARE differences between men and women. See, I said it too! Does that make me an egoistic jerk too? Elvin might have made some mistakes, but so did Sondra and everyone else on the show, and calling him a child is ridiculous!
Mikado 03-03-2008, 10:10 PM Were calling a fictional character a jerk, but, thats how he was written...oh well, I dont think this is going anywhere. Irene, sweetie, youre on your own  ;)
Furienna 03-03-2008, 10:13 PM Well, if Elvin was supposed to be a jerk, they did a very bad job making him look like one. They did a better job making Kenny look like a jerk, and still, Cliff called him "Elvin" as a deragotory name.

 Cliff did good right there calling him "Elvin."
Furienna 03-03-2008, 10:25 PM But I think Kenny was worse in that episode than what Elvin ever was. He was rude, which Elvin never was.
Ireneparalegal 03-03-2008, 10:30 PM But I think Kenny was worse in that episode than what Elvin ever was. He was rude, which Elvin never was.
So because Elvin wasn't rude, that makes it better? A chauvinist is a chauvinist, whether he is rude, crude or lewd...or in Elvin's case, he was a moron who was afraid of Sondra. ;)
Mr. Television 03-03-2008, 11:07 PM But Kenny didn't know better...he kept listening to his big brother. I swear I think all the men on TCS were wimps or jerks.
TVFactFan 03-03-2008, 11:12 PM But Kenny didn't know better...he kept listening to his big brother. I swear I think all the men on TCS were wimps or jerks.
Dabnis was a NICE GUY-lol That was my Boy
Ireneparalegal 03-03-2008, 11:16 PM But Kenny didn't know better...he kept listening to his big brother. I swear I think all the men on TCS were wimps or jerks.
I concur. I have said that a few times.
Brieannas21 03-03-2008, 11:16 PM Dabnis was a NICE GUY-lol That was my Boy
Yeah I liked him too, and he wasn't a jerk
Ireneparalegal 03-03-2008, 11:28 PM Vicky on the Love Boat was added to the show and it didn't change the quality of the show. I liked it. Probably one of the few times a child was added and it helped the show.
Ireneparalegal 03-04-2008, 06:38 PM I guess there aren't that many child actors who were added and made a show just as great or better Solomon. There aren't that many posts giving examples.
TVFactFan 03-04-2008, 07:03 PM I guess there aren't that many child actors who were added and made a show just as great or better Solomon. There aren't that many posts giving examples.
I saw the girl who played JUDY on Family Matters on Celebrity Rehab and I will say she looks better than RUDY-lol It's shame she took that path because she is HOT
Ireneparalegal 03-04-2008, 07:08 PM Hopefully she will kick her habit and maybe do some HOT pics so you can look at her. She is pretty, really pretty.
Furienna 03-04-2008, 07:59 PM I believe she has started living a better life now.
Gemini_89 04-12-2016, 08:20 AM When they added Amanda Bynes to All That it helped the show.
Before this turns into a no holds barred chick fight (and if you have to fight, PLEASE include a video!) I think I have the definitive answer for you:
I Love Lucy!!
Lucy had her baby in Season 2. The show was more popular than ever. So there you go. Case closed!
andress_jade 04-13-2016, 11:23 PM Ross' ex wife Carol had a baby at the end of season 1 of Friends and the show went on for 10 more years.
Rachel and Ross had Emma at the end of season 8, and the show went on for two more years. The episode where Rachel gives birth was one of the most watched episodes. Even Jennifer Aniston herself said that it's one of her favorite episodes.
Jackie gave birth to Andy fairly early in the series on Roseanne and the show continued to be successful.
Rebecca gave birth to Nicky and Alex on Full House and the show went on for a few more years.
Nicky was born on Fresh Prince and the show went on for three more years.
After Andy on Family Ties was born, the show continued to be successful for awhile longer.
Even when Growing Pains added Chrissy, the show went on for a few more years as well.
Bringing a baby onto a show isn't necessarily a death knell for a show, most of the time it revitalizes it and brings new life to a show.
