Why do the writers constantly have episodes about her? Her personality is a kid, and these episodes about her are unfunny and senseless. She's best playing off someone, not being the focus!

View Full Version : Any episode about Vera straight up sucked! GARFIELDKOOL 02-27-2008, 08:20 PM Why do the writers constantly have episodes about her? Her personality is a kid, and these episodes about her are unfunny and senseless. She's best playing off someone, not being the focus! Ireneparalegal 02-27-2008, 08:29 PM  Your thread title made me laugh. I hated the episode where Tommy fell in love with her. Too obnoxious. What else? Damn, I can't even think of any other ones right now. They are not that memorable. Brian Damage 02-27-2008, 08:32 PM There was an episode where she was acting psychotic about a movie star. I forget which one at the moment, but she thought the tv character was real. GARFIELDKOOL 02-27-2008, 08:35 PM Sorry about that Irene, but I stand by that statement. And Brian, that episode where she thought George Burns was real was dumb also. All episodes about her are far-fetched. Brian Damage 02-27-2008, 08:50 PM Sorry about that Irene, but I stand by that statement. And Brian, that episode where she thought George Burns was real was dumb also. All episodes about her are far-fetched. I agree, Vera was a great sidekick, but NOT a leading lady. Ireneparalegal 02-27-2008, 09:07 PM Did Jolene (other than when she first came on) have any episodes around her? I know Belle did, but I can't recall if Jolene did. GARFIELDKOOL 02-27-2008, 09:28 PM Did Jolene (other than when she first came on) have any episodes around her? I know Belle did, but I can't recall if Jolene did. Yes, obviously her debut episode, and one that came on the other day about some nitwit security guard liking her. There are a few more, but those came to mind first. Ireneparalegal 02-27-2008, 09:29 PM I haven't caught ALICE for a while, so I don't know if any episodes have shown Jolene having an episode revolve around her. I couldn't remember and the one you mentioned above, I still can't remember it. Brieannas21 02-27-2008, 09:38 PM Sorry about that Irene, but I stand by that statement. And Brian, that episode where she thought George Burns was real was dumb also. All episodes about her are far-fetched. OMG I so agree, that episode was so frustrating to watch. No one can be that naive. If I were Alice, that would have been the end of our friendship. ThomasE 02-27-2008, 09:46 PM Sorry guys, I am a big Vera fan and enjoyed those episodes. There will be no throwing of the tomatoes. LOL. Ireneparalegal 02-27-2008, 10:21 PM Sorry guys, I am a big Vera fan and enjoyed those episodes. There will be no throwing of the tomatoes. LOL. Don't throw tomatoes...or throw straws in the air. ;) FredScuttle 02-27-2008, 10:35 PM I don't know if they specifically center around her, but there's one where Jolene is playing softball, another one where she's a stewardess (or flight attendant, if you prefer :) There was another one that had a bunch of her family staying with her. Ireneparalegal 02-27-2008, 10:39 PM ^^^Thank you. I remember the softball one. I was just wondering if the Jolene character got her fair share of episodes to revolve around her. ThomasE 02-27-2008, 11:02 PM Don't throw tomatoes...or throw straws in the air. ;) HA HA HA! Love It! I love me some Vera Louise Gorman Novack. She improved throughout the years. Ireneparalegal 02-27-2008, 11:06 PM HA HA HA! Love It! I love me some Vera Louise Gorman Novack. She improved throughout the years. Yes she did. If you compare her to the first season, you'd swear the early Vera was a "special special child." Later on she just becomes "a child." ;) ThomasE 02-27-2008, 11:15 PM Yes she did. If you compare her to the first season, you'd swear the early Vera was a "special special child." Later on she just becomes "a child." ;) We talked about that in another topic about being like a child on the little yellow bus. I am so glad that she improved. LOL. Ireneparalegal 02-27-2008, 11:23 PM We talked about that in another topic about being like a child on the little yellow bus. I am so glad that she improved. LOL. Me too. There is no way the Vera from the first season would have ever married. I like the Vera we see now. ;) ThomasE 02-27-2008, 11:26 PM Me too. There is no way the Vera from the first season would have ever married. I like the Vera we see now. ;) I do too. That is what TV can do for you. If a show remains on the air for a while, it can transform a character like Corky for Murphy Brown who when from a dimwited ditz to a more mature, sarcastic kind of character. Ireneparalegal 02-27-2008, 11:29 PM You are right. We got to see Vera grow up. Yes, she is an adult woman, but we saw her transform and bloom. Hey, she ended up married, not Alice. ThomasE 02-27-2008, 11:33 PM Well, Alice was just happy to finally start a singing career. she deseverd it just like Vera deserved to have happiness. She even got preggers which I thought was great. I'm just sorry that she and Elliot agreed to name the baby Mel. LOL. She even got preggers which I thought was great. I'm just sorry that she and Elliot agreed to name the baby Mel. LOL. I actually had hoped that Alice would have found happiness with a man. Not that she needed a man, mind you, but still, she could have been happy to have found love and that it was more fulfilling than having a singing career. Just my way of how I would have liked the show to end. Vera's baby's name... horrible decision. ThomasE 02-29-2008, 12:14 AM I actually had hoped that Alice would have found happiness with a man. Yes, she is an adult woman, but we saw her transform and bloom. Hey, she ended up married, not Alice. compare her to the movie Vera! That was a WEIRD chick! And Vera still should have married Steve Marsh.....I'm really dreading the upcoming Elliot episodes :barf: catlover79 04-04-2008, 06:06 PM Don't throw tomatoes...or throw straws in the air. ;) :brent VeraJoleneAlice 04-06-2008, 02:48 AM I can't agree with you on this! I love Vera and I loved her apartment and her crazy bed! I enjoyed all the episodes about her. I really love the one when everyone found out about her "criminal past". GARFIELDKOOL 04-06-2008, 11:56 AM I can't agree with you on this! I love Vera and I loved her apartment and her crazy bed! I enjoyed all the episodes about her. I really love the one when everyone found out about her "criminal past". Sorry, Vera doesn't do a thing for me. Episodes about her were part reason why the last two or three seasons stunk! VeraJoleneAlice 04-06-2008, 02:21 PM Vera is flawless! :ufo: ThomasE 04-06-2008, 11:24 PM That is right! She is the true diva! Mr. Television 04-06-2008, 11:32 PM I loved Vera. Alice really sucked. She was boring. :D  VeraJoleneAlice 04-06-2008, 11:51 PM I really do love Vera! If it wasn't for her in the seasons when Alice was being snotty, when flo left and when Jolene wasn't on, I would not have liked the show. And yes Vera is a true diva! :props: catlover79 04-07-2008, 11:05 AM Whatever happened to Beth Howland post-Alice, anyway?? Jude The Obscure 04-07-2008, 11:09 AM Hopefully she invested well and is living off her interest payments :) kooky12 04-07-2008, 12:20 PM I watched plenty of Alice when it was on originally, and have not gotten a chance to watch many reruns. But one episode that I remember, was when Vera got hooked on soap operas and had like 3 TVs to see them all and started missing work. FredScuttle 04-07-2008, 01:03 PM Last thing I saw her in was The Tick (the live action one with Patrick Warburton as The Tick) and she's married to Charles Kimbrough (who hasn't done alot lately either, at least according to IMDB) VeraJoleneAlice 04-07-2008, 01:23 PM Last thing I saw her in was The Tick (the live action one with Patrick Warburton as The Tick) and she's married to Charles Kimbrough (who hasn't done alot lately either, at least according to IMDB) I was shocked when I learned she married "Jim" from Murphy Brown! catlover79 04-07-2008, 01:33 PM Last thing I saw her in was The Tick (the live action one with Patrick Warburton as The Tick) and she's married to Charles Kimbrough (who hasn't done alot lately either, at least according to IMDB) He was on the Today Show a few weeks back reuniting with cast members from Murphy Brown...I did see that. Torgo 08-13-2008, 11:20 PM I'm another Vera fan. She's always been my favorite Alice character, and she's the reason I kept watching the show as a kid when it originally aired. senor boogie woogi 08-14-2008, 05:56 AM Hola! Beth Howland, the woman who played Vera more or less disappeared after Alice went off the air. According to Wikipedia, she was on Broadway in several productions, hit it big with ALICE and then after than went into semi-retirement. I wondered because I have never ever seen her in anything else on television. Vera was annoying. Reminds me of a meth-head, that she is very thin, non sensical, and always always moving. The straws in the opening credit, high on meth. She was afraid the little green monster was going to get her. As an aside, my grandmother was named Vera, and the character is the only other Vera I know. catlover79 08-14-2008, 11:35 AM ^ The lady who lived across the street from us for many years (who has since passed on) was named Vera. Nice lady. Torgo 08-14-2008, 12:49 PM As an aside, my grandmother was named Vera, and the character is the only other Vera I know. Norm's wife on Cheers was named Vera There was an actress named Vera Miles Pink Floyd has a song called 'Vera'(a reference to British singer Vera Lynn) FredScuttle 09-03-2008, 02:26 AM Beth Howland was in a few shows in the last 10 years or so. She appeared on Sabrina, the Teenage Witch (didn't see that one) and Arthur/The Moth's (The Tick's sidekick) mother on the live action series "The Tick" (that one I have seen). I guess her latest appearance was on the show "As Told By Ginger" (I've never seen that show) in Nov 2002. catlover79 09-03-2008, 11:43 AM Hopefully she invested well and is living off her interest payments :) :yeahthat |
