View Full Version : Any episode about Vera straight up sucked!

Why do the writers constantly have episodes about her? Her personality is a kid, and these episodes about her are unfunny and senseless. She's best playing off someone, not being the focus!

 Your thread title made me laugh.

I hated the episode where Tommy fell in love with her. Too obnoxious.

What else? Damn, I can't even think of any other ones right now. They are not that memorable.

There was an episode where she was acting psychotic about a movie star. I forget which one at the moment, but she thought the tv character was real.

Sorry about that Irene, but I stand by that statement.

And Brian, that episode where she thought George Burns was real was dumb also. All episodes about her are far-fetched.

I agree, Vera was a great sidekick, but NOT a leading lady.

Did Jolene (other than when she first came on) have any episodes around her? I know Belle did, but I can't recall if Jolene did.

Yes, obviously her debut episode, and one that came on the other day about some nitwit security guard liking her. There are a few more, but those came to mind first.

I haven't caught ALICE for a while, so I don't know if any episodes have shown Jolene having an episode revolve around her. I couldn't remember and the one you mentioned above, I still can't remember it.

OMG I so agree, that episode was so frustrating to watch. No one can be that naive. If I were Alice, that would have been the end of our friendship.

I don't know if they specifically center around her, but there's one where Jolene is playing softball, another one where she's a stewardess (or flight attendant, if you prefer :) There was another one that had a bunch of her family staying with her.

^^^Thank you. I remember the softball one. I was just wondering if the Jolene character got her fair share of episodes to revolve around her.

Yes she did. If you compare her to the first season, you'd swear the early Vera was a "special special child." Later on she just becomes "a child." ;)

We talked about that in another topic about being like a child on the little yellow bus. I am so glad that she improved. LOL.

Me too. There is no way the Vera from the first season would have ever married. I like the Vera we see now. ;)

I do too. That is what TV can do for you. If a show remains on the air for a while, it can transform a character like Corky for Murphy Brown who when from a dimwited ditz to a more mature, sarcastic kind of character.

You are right. We got to see Vera grow up. Yes, she is an adult woman, but we saw her transform and bloom. Hey, she ended up married, not Alice.

Well, Alice was just happy to finally start a singing career. she deseverd it just like Vera deserved to have happiness. She even got preggers which I thought was great. I'm just sorry that she and Elliot agreed to name the baby Mel. LOL.

I actually had hoped that Alice would have found happiness with a man. Not that she needed a man, mind you, but still, she could have been happy to have found love and that it was more fulfilling than having a singing career. Just my way of how I would have liked the show to end.

Vera's baby's name... horrible decision.

I would have told Mel to "Kiss Mah Grits" after he gave me the $5,000.00.

I can't agree with you on this! I love Vera and I loved her apartment and her crazy bed! I enjoyed all the episodes about her. I really love the one when everyone found out about her "criminal past".

And yes Vera is a true diva! :props:

I watched plenty of Alice when it was on originally, and have not gotten a chance to watch many reruns.
But one episode that I remember, was when Vera got hooked on soap operas and had like 3 TVs to see them all and started missing work.

Last thing I saw her in was The Tick (the live action one with Patrick Warburton as The Tick) and she's married to Charles Kimbrough (who hasn't done alot lately either, at least according to IMDB)

I was shocked when I learned she married "Jim" from Murphy Brown!

He was on the Today Show a few weeks back reuniting with cast members from Murphy Brown...I did see that.

I'm another Vera fan. She's always been my favorite Alice character, and she's the reason I kept watching the show as a kid when it originally aired.

Hola!

Beth Howland, the woman who played Vera more or less disappeared after Alice went off the air. According to Wikipedia, she was on Broadway in several productions, hit it big with ALICE and then after than went into semi-retirement.

I wondered because I have never ever seen her in anything else on television.

Vera was annoying. Reminds me of a meth-head, that she is very thin, non sensical, and always always moving. The straws in the opening credit, high on meth. She was afraid the little green monster was going to get her.

As an aside, my grandmother was named Vera, and the character is the only other Vera I know.

^ The lady who lived across the street from us for many years (who has since passed on) was named Vera. Nice lady.

Norm's wife on Cheers was named Vera
There was an actress named Vera Miles
Pink Floyd has a song called 'Vera'(a reference to British singer Vera Lynn)

Beth Howland was in a few shows in the last 10 years or so. She appeared on Sabrina, the Teenage Witch (didn't see that one) and Arthur/The Moth's (The Tick's sidekick) mother on the live action series "The Tick" (that one I have seen). I guess her latest appearance was on the show "As Told By Ginger" (I've never seen that show) in Nov 2002.
