View Full Version : Gary Coleman explains this morning on the Today Show that he doesn't want to be......
TVFactFan 02-26-2008, 09:28 PM Remembered for Diffrent Strokes because that particular acting Job in his life doesn't help him getting acting jobs in 2008. So that's why he wants to leave hat part of his life in the past
Also His Wife was with him on the Today Show and said that she only know him as GARY because she is only 22 and never seen Diffrent Strokes. That was her response to Al Roker's question-"what do you friends say about you being married to Gary Coleman?
Ireneparalegal 02-26-2008, 10:15 PM Those are the same answers they gave on that show they appeared on last week when they talked abt their marriage and his anger issues with people only recognizing him for DS. Sorry Gary... but what else do you want people to remember you for?

The Movie he played in with Robert Gulliamue in 1983-lol
Ireneparalegal 02-26-2008, 10:24 PM The Movie he played in with Robert Gulliamue in 1983-lol
Pleeeeeeeeeeze... Gary doesn't want people to remember him from that era at all. That was because he was young.
Brian Damage 02-26-2008, 10:39 PM No offense to Gary, but if it wasn't for DS, nobody would know who he was. Also, with his stature, what roles can he actually obtain?
TVFactFan 02-26-2008, 10:43 PM No offense to Gary, but if it wasn't for DS, nobody would know who he was. Also, with his stature, what roles can he actually obtain?
Well in defense of Gary, The show did go off the air over 20 years ago so I can see why he wants to move on. Same way Demond Wilson doesn't want to discuss Sanford and Son anymore
Ireneparalegal 02-26-2008, 10:46 PM Then he needs to "move on" and stop making tv appearances of any kind. We only know him for DS and if he wants the fans to leave him alone, then he needs to avoid the media and get another job.

I can understand that, but with his bad attitude and his small stature, Hollywood producers aren't exactly knocking down his door.
TVFactFan 02-26-2008, 10:49 PM Then he needs to "move on" and stop making tv appearances of any kind. We only know him for DS and if he wants the fans to leave him alone, then he needs to avoid the media and get another job.
Well why is his situation diffrent from Demond Wilson?
Dean Winchester 02-26-2008, 10:50 PM Diff'rent Strokes doesn't keep Gary from getting acting roles, Gary's attitude keeps him from getting acting roles. Dixie Carter, Janet Jackson, Paul Walker and Joey Lawrence are just a few who appeared on that show and yet have had success long after the show.
Brian Damage 02-26-2008, 10:54 PM Diff'rent Strokes doesn't keep Gary from getting acting roles, Gary's attitude keeps him from getting acting roles. Dixie Carter, Janet Jackson, Paul Walker and Joey Lawrence are just a few who appeared on that show and yet have had success long after the show.
That may be true, but none of those actors were regulars for very long.
Ireneparalegal 02-26-2008, 10:55 PM Well why is his situation diffrent from Demond Wilson?
Because Demond Wilson keeps a low profile and doesn't get all riled up when people acknowledge him. He hasn't been in trouble for assault. He doesn't whine and b*tch abt his work on S&S...HE STAYS OUT OF THE MEDIA and doesn't go on every show like Inside Edition crying abt everything, showing his bad attitude, showing how angry he is...should I go on?
Dean Winchester 02-26-2008, 10:56 PM I think if Gary acted a little more gracious towards his past, he'd have more of a shot at a future. Mindy Cohn has had a very successful voice-over career yet if there's anything FOL-related, she's there (Lisa Whelchel too, even tho Lisa retired from the industry so it's not necessarily the same thing). Michael J. Fox will do anything Family Ties related, Tom Hanks has never denied Bosom Buddies and has even put Scolari in some of his films, and so on. Gary Coleman owes whatever fame he has left to "whatchootalkinbout Willis".
Ireneparalegal 02-26-2008, 10:58 PM Gary is the poster child for what can happen to a child actor who does nothing with their life after there is no show business work.
Brian Damage 02-26-2008, 11:13 PM Why oh why do I see a Gary Coleman reality show???
TVFactFan 02-26-2008, 11:17 PM Because Demond Wilson keeps a low profile and doesn't get all riled up when people acknowledge him. He hasn't been in trouble for assault. He doesn't whine and b*tch abt his work on S&S...HE STAYS OUT OF THE MEDIA and doesn't go on every show like Inside Edition crying abt everything, showing his bad attitude, showing how angry he is...should I go on?
No you pretty much covered it-lol
Ireneparalegal 02-26-2008, 11:18 PM Speaking of reality shows, I remember when Gary appeared on the Surreal Life and got all bent out of shape when former "rapper" Vanilla Ice kept begging him to say, "Watchatalkinbout Willis?" Gary huffed and puffed outta there.
Dean Winchester 02-26-2008, 11:31 PM now that DS is back in reruns, I somehow have a feeling Gary isn't going to be refusing the residual checks he gets
Ireneparalegal 02-26-2008, 11:32 PM now that DS is back in reruns, I somehow have a feeling Gary isn't going to be refusing the residual checks he gets
A hell no he won't. He should use part of that money for anger management.
The Movie he played in with Robert Gulliamue in 1983-lol
^^^^^^^

Nice. But I have to admit, of all the Coleman flicks, "The Kid With The Broken Halo" remains a favorite. That and the one where he was some kid that started fires. :)
Jude The Obscure 02-27-2008, 11:58 AM He did a straight to DVD movie called "Church Ball". Didn't see it, but it's available to rent at my store LOL
Jude The Obscure 02-27-2008, 12:01 PM now that DS is back in reruns, I somehow have a feeling Gary isn't going to be refusing the residual checks he gets
Do you think any of the cast still gets residuals? I don't know how contracts were set up by 1978. The one smart person I know for sure concerning residuals was Audrey Meadows. She did The Honeymooners with the lifetime clause of getting paid residuals until she died!

I could be wrong, but I think if you are a member of SAG (Screen Actors Guild) you automatically get residuals for reruns...unless of course if there was a buyout and just paid the stars one flat rate.
Dean Winchester 02-27-2008, 06:00 PM I think Jerry Seinfeld and the cast of Friends changed the way it goes with residuals, so I am sure that now applies to older shows as well in reruns.
ThomasE 02-27-2008, 09:56 PM Then he needs to "move on" and stop making tv appearances of any kind. We only know him for DS and if he wants the fans to leave him alone, then he needs to avoid the media and get another job.
He did...it was called being a security guard.

However, with residuals can run out due to the constant airing of reruns of shows.
Ireneparalegal 02-27-2008, 10:13 PM He did...it was called being a security guard.
Wasn't that when he was in trouble for assault?
ThomasE 02-27-2008, 11:14 PM Wasn't that when he was in trouble for assault?
I think so...
Ireneparalegal 02-27-2008, 11:24 PM I know he got upset with a fan asking for an autograph and something abt her wanting him to say "Watchatalkinbout Willis"...not sure, but I do know she asked for an autograph and it escalated to assault on his part.

Ireneparalegal 02-27-2008, 11:34 PM The brutha was bitta. LOL.
Bitter is right. They should make a new reality show: BITTER CELEBS or how abt BITTA BRUTHAS starring Gary Coleman and Mikey Tyson? Who else would be on there?
Celebrity Anger Management...Hmmmmmm...

Vanilla Ice??
Scott Baio??
Ireneparalegal 02-28-2008, 01:42 AM Vanilla Ice??
Scott Baio??
 Yeah, I never realized how angry Scott was until I seen an episode of his reality show (boyfriend was watching it actually). Man, that dude complains abt $$$$$ yet he gambles $5000 on one game in Vegas.
Let me add to that celebrity anger management group:
Danny Bonaduce
Johnny Fairplay (Survivor)
Tonya Harding (former ice skater)
Gary Busey
Jeff Conaway

that's funny, on his guest appearance on The Simpsons a few years back playing himself, he had no problem saying the phrase, but then again, he WAS getting paid for it, I'm sure...

Shannen Doherty too. I'd pay money to see the footage of her kicking Paris Hilton's ass for sleeping with her husband
friendsfan77 02-28-2008, 03:33 AM Gary Coleman owes whatever fame he has left to "whatchootalkinbout Willis".
and that's funny too, because all that was because of a typo in the script, according to Todd Bridges
Ireneparalegal 02-28-2008, 04:30 PM It was a typo. And like you said, when it comes to getting paid for something, Gary has no problem saying that phrase.
As a matter of fact, I seen an episode of MARTIN last week and Gary was on there. He was playing a "mean, tough guy" who wanted to kick Martin's butt. Anyhoo, Martin ended up saying that phrase (Watchatalkinbout Willis) to Gary's character, and he did the same face that Gary did when he would say that phrase. So why is Gary a hypocrite when it comes to using that phrase? He is sending mixed messages.
BTW, Gary looked very good and nice looking in that episode. I guess that is when he was at his prime. Now, all that bitterness has just worn him out and makes him look old.

Because like you said he got paid for it-lol I don't think no one should ask him to say that if they run into him in the street, to me that's just foolish. If I saw him I would say-"Hey How doing you Gary, I'm one of our biggest fans" Wouldn't ask for a autograph, just a handshake and that's it. I'm not going to treat the man like a 24 hour Clown

He was paid for his appearance on the Surreal Life and when he was asked to say it, he refused and walked off the set. Well, they were at a restaurant, and he walked out and left in a cab.

But Vanilla Ice was trying to CLOWN him, it wasn't part of a script on a Sitcom like it was in 1995 on Martin

I think that they were making him feel low and degrading him in a way. I believe someone actually picked him up and carried him against his will. So if I were in his shoes I would have left also. A person can only take so much before they snap.
Ireneparalegal 02-28-2008, 04:59 PM But Vanilla Ice was trying to CLOWN him, it wasn't part of a script on a Sitcom like it was in 1995 on Martin
Vanilla Ice is a has-been with his own issues. He hates what made him famous too.
But overall, you made this thread saying how Gary hates being remembered for DS, not the Whatcha phrase. You said that is what he said. Now, we all agree that Gary will always be remembered as Arnold, hands down. There is no changing that. Just like Bob Denver was always remembered as Gilligan, regardless of the other work he did. You either take it like a sweet orange and savor the fruit or swallow that bitter pill and don't get angry when the public acknowledges you for the very thing that made you famous. Hey, he should be glad he is remembered for something good rather than have a bad legacy.
And if Gary wants us to forget him, he should stay out of the limelight.

If he was smart he would capitalize on the catch phrase and his image. I'll have all kinds of hats, shirts, shorts, making guest appearances, promos. You can't make money by sitting on your ass and complaining.

He is adamant that he wants nothing to do with that show. Yet, he keeps doing things that only connect him with that character. Like you said, he should have made money off of that phrase. Did Jimmie Walker get any $$ for the whole DY-NO-MITE phrase? I remember back when everywhere you looked, you'd see J.J's face plastered on shirts, hats, notebooks, school supplies.

I just looked it up and his face and the catch phrase are in t-shirts. If I were him I'll sue somebody.
Ireneparalegal 02-28-2008, 05:24 PM I just looked it up and his face and the catch phrase are in t-shirts. If I were him I'll sue somebody.
I wonder though, who owns the right to that phrase? Someone has to be making money off of that. Would it be DS? or the company who now owns the show?
Brieannas21 02-28-2008, 05:40 PM I wonder though, who owns the right to that phrase? Someone has to be making money off of that. Would it be DS? or the company who now owns the show?
Doesn’t he still have to give permission to use his image on anything? I would think. I know that if I were a child star back in the day, and I saw my face on t-shirts, and I know I didn't give permission to use my likeness, I would be suing somebody.

Oh his face is on the shirts too? I thought you meant just the phrase. Alrighty then, I need to find out more abt this. Sounds like Gary should be getting some money for this. Then again, how do we know he doesn't already? Maybe he signed a lump sum deal where he received lets say $2 million dollars for the use of his face and no more. I am really interested in finding this out.

Yep his face are on some of the shirts. It looks like his pic from the season 1 DVD. And I saw another shirt with just his face on it.
Ireneparalegal 02-28-2008, 06:49 PM Brie, I am going to make a thread regarding Gary and his likeness being used in a violent video game. Gary authorized this.
TVFactFan 02-28-2008, 07:01 PM I think I will watch that Surreal Life with Gary Coleman Again Tonight after reading this thread
Ireneparalegal 02-28-2008, 07:11 PM Here is a quote from Gary regarding "the business":
“I’m ashamed to be a member of the business. It just irritates me.”
Here is the whole article:
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/23352686/
For someone who hates the business, he sure continues to try and get whatever work he can IN THE BUSINESS. He also hates the business but he wants to find acting jobs that will help eradicate the persona (Arnold) that forever follows him.
ThomasE 02-29-2008, 12:26 AM Well let us see if we can think of some other bitter people besides Gary:
Chance from "I love NY".
Bootz from Flavor of Love/Charm School
Burt Reynolds is not a has been but he could be a special guest star. LOL.

Ireneparalegal 02-29-2008, 12:40 AM Too bad rapper Lisa "Left Eye" Lopes is no longer with us. She had anger issues too. She put her boyfriend's house on fire.

I had to bump this thread because I remembered this post with the article where Gary states his hatred of the business, not to mention him saying he wants to forget his past, yet he appears on Divorce Court and tells the world his problems...problems he created by being the bitter little pill he is.

Todd is now a Christian to speaks to kids in schools and churches. I think it is great that he is using his less-than-stellar past to help others. (Remember his guest spot as a "youthful offender" on Barney Miller? ;))

I think that is why Gary is so bitter and I kind of (just a tiny bit) don't blame him. Gary will forever be remember as cute little Arnold Jackson from Diff'rent Strokes and for a grown man that could be a hard pill to swallow. I think that when you are an actor/actress, acting is your passion, and you are typed-cast, it could be a bit depressing. Also when you have grown up in a certain life style and you are accustom to certain things, and then you cannot afford them, that can be a bit depressing also. I believe that‘s why he feels like a failure. I do not think that he really hates DS I think that he hates the fact that he will forever be remembered for that bit part.
Now on the other hand, he could have made a good living from DS. If I were him, as I said in the past, I would have had T-shirts, hats, jacket, underwear, mugs, sheets, blanket, mouse pads, pillows anything that I could get my face on. I would have been making all kind of guest appearances, anything that I could do to keep my face and name out there. If I had to do movies that went straight to DVD then so be it. I would not be sulking and blaming others for my problems.
Jude The Obscure 05-09-2008, 07:17 PM Also his guest spot on The Waltons and his regular role on Fish :)
Ireneparalegal 05-09-2008, 07:21 PM I loved FISH. I want that on DVD.
I agree with your post, especially the part where Gary could easily profit from DS by attending conventions, selling t-shirts, and anything else. I mean, this guy sold a pair of used pants on ebay to get money. If that is worthy enough to him to do, why not do something where he can generate more money and have it come in on a regular basis?
hughpuppies 05-11-2008, 11:20 PM He could have done what Screech and Slater did. They both went on a college tour and toured and talked at colleges. Both came to my college a tiny college in Pennsylvania of 6,000+.
Screech even signed autographs and had his CD(music, Salty and the pocketknife group, think that is the name) on sale which had people lined up for miles to buy one.
I didn't buy one but alot did and bet he made good money.
Both of them Screech and Slate both talked about saved by the Bell and how it made them the peolple are today and were both thankfull for the show giving them an oportunity to be in the spot light.
