View Full Version : If a company told you they won't be able to pay you until May, would you still go?
TVFactFan 02-25-2008, 08:20 PM LOL-This girl at my job was given a letter by the company saying she won't be able to get paid until MAY and do you know she actually agreed to still come there every day?-lol
Even if you have a savings account why would you put yourself in that kind of situation?
The things that people do-lol
Ireneparalegal 02-25-2008, 08:23 PM Why does she have to wait to get paid? C'mon Solomon, details, give details upfront.

Hell no, I need to money to pay for my expenses, especially my electricity bill.
TVFactFan 02-25-2008, 08:26 PM Why does she have to wait to get paid? C'mon Solomon, details, give details upfront.
Because the contract they are going to pay her from they don't have it yet-lol And I hope she doesn't think she is going to get 3 months RETROPAY.
By them telling her that upfront, they get to buy MORE TIME, so it maybe 5 months.
She is a DipSH*T
TVFactFan 02-25-2008, 08:27 PM Hell no, I need to money to pay for my expenses, especially my electricity bill.
They will assist her with transportation
Ireneparalegal 02-25-2008, 09:06 PM Why won't she get retropay?
Brieannas21 02-25-2008, 09:50 PM No I don't work for free, I'll start working when my pay start. I can't tell the water electric and gas company "Oh I haven't gotten paid yet, I'll pay you in 3 months".
That girl is stupid for working for free.
TVFactFan 02-25-2008, 10:06 PM Why won't she get retropay?
Because that's how they do, slimy
TVFactFan 02-25-2008, 10:08 PM No I don't work for free, I'll start working when my pay start. I can't tell the water electric and gas company "Oh I haven't gotten paid yet, I'll pay you in 3 months".

Well since she received $7000 in her tax refund, I guess it's not a big deal on 2/25/08. Just wait until 5/25/08 and she what that $7000 will be looking like

Same here. I don't love my job enough. I may work a half an hour or hour off the clock, but I'm sure as hell not going to work for free for 3 months.

I wouldn't care if I got a $20,000 return, I'm still not working for free.
TVFactFan 02-25-2008, 10:28 PM I wouldn't care if I got a $20,000 return, I'm still not working for free.
I kno exactly what will happen, once the 3 months come she will be told probably another month-"The paperwork just went through
Ireneparalegal 02-25-2008, 10:31 PM Not only that, but why should she have to live off her income tax refund? That would be nice to just put in the bank and have it there for an emergency or for some luxury later on.
She's either crazy or she doesn't care.

BOTH-lol And to make it so bad she has TWO KIDS, it wouldn't be AS CRAZY if she was living alone

lol
Courtnee 02-25-2008, 10:49 PM Hell naw, I don't do that. Either you pay me or I quit.
Janice 02-25-2008, 11:09 PM Never, in a million years. I don't understand some people.
Ireneparalegal 02-25-2008, 11:21 PM Can the company legally do that? I mean, if there is no contract yet, how can they offer someone that option? I would have told them, "When the contract is in your hand, call me."

Well they asked her and she volunteered.
TVFactFan 02-26-2008, 02:15 AM Well they asked her and she volunteered.
Yup they gave her the option and she agreed to come to work for nothing until July-lol
Ireneparalegal 02-26-2008, 02:16 AM I did read that and understood, what I don't get is can they legally ask someone to work WITHOUT having a contract? If they can't pay her til a contract is completed, then how can they have her work? I'd tell her to talk to the labor department.

I'm not sure but I'm old enough to know 3 months means 6-lol She better manage that $7000
Ireneparalegal 02-26-2008, 02:26 AM I'm not sure but I'm old enough to know 3 months means 6-lol She better manage that $7000
Why is she the only one doing this? Was she the only one who agreed?
TVFactFan 02-26-2008, 02:30 AM Why is she the only one doing this? Was she the only one who agreed?
She was the only interested in the position-lol

It's a clerical position, I need to read this letter again because if it's no date on that letter saying the DATE of her first pay then she needs to be admitted into a mental instution
Max Whittaker 02-26-2008, 03:32 PM I wouldn't mind working without pay IF two things are assured:
I love the job and feel I'm making a difference
I have the means to live without cash flow for some time.

but wouldn't be better to INCREASE he cash stack you are living off of instead of having it reduced the next 3 or 4 months? Then once it's reduced you have to build it back up again-lol

Not necessarily. I would give all my savings to have the job I had in 2006. And that job paid far, far less than my current job. But I loved it. And I felt I was making a difference. And I'd give a lot to feel that way again.
$7000 is nice. But maybe that's not high on her priority list right now. Perhaps she wants to feel fulfilled.
And that's ok.

well the difference is she is going to just have a clerical position and will have to live off the $7000-lol When I was unemployed I did my best to live off my unemployment checks because I still wanted my emergency stash to grow or if not that, stay the way it was before i became unemployed. This girl is making a foolish decision because she has two kids and have to pay bills and rent from now to July and i'm just amazed she can't see it won't stay that way when you have to pay bills, and eat every month.
BTW: she isn't here today-lol

I don't know her. I can't presume her motives.

I talk to her today and she said that her husband pays the rent so with the $7000, I guess she can work for free until July since it's a two income household-lol

I just hope the girl got this in writing. Besides, the company wouldn't be stupid enough to have someone work for them and not eventually pay them, that could cause them some problems with the labor board.
I just hate seeing $7000 wasted when it could be used for a luxury item or to just have saved for a rainy day.

She said her husband and her mom doesn't want her to do it
Coffeecup 02-27-2008, 06:36 PM Nope I wouldn't take the job under that arrangement. She is being USED.
I was a teen and my employer kept saying we will pay you in 2weeks, then it went to 3. My mom said They are using you. Speak up. I was so shy and so trusting. I got some pay but in time they left town.

My boss has a habit of hiring people without receiving the funding FIRST
Ireneparalegal 02-27-2008, 08:01 PM My boss has a habit of hiring people without receiving the funding FIRST
Are those people contractors who work within your company?
TVFactFan 02-27-2008, 08:05 PM Are those people contractors who work within your company?
Yup, and before he gets the letter confirming that he has the funding, he still brings people on board like a fool
Ireneparalegal 02-27-2008, 08:06 PM Yup, and before he gets the letter confirming that he has the funding, he still brings people on board like a fool
So, your boss is the one who told her if she wanted to work without getting paid until May?

YUP!-lol
It has to me too back in July of 2005, I didn't know he hired me and didn't have the funding yet and didn't get it until August and I had to wait 6 weeks to get paid but it was Two checks

So you did what you said she was being stupid for. And apparently it worked out for you.So what's the big deal? It may be incompetence on your bosses part. But a girls gotta do what a girls gotta do.
Why do you enjoy busting peoples balls?
TVFactFan 02-27-2008, 08:21 PM So you got retropay. Why did you say she wouldn't get retropay?
Because I get paid out of a bigger Pot, she will be paid from a funding source that is not as major as the one I'm under

Because they NEVR TOLD ME that they didn't have the funding, it was supposed to be a SECRET but it came out when we didn't get paid on July 30th. This gorl is being told upfront that she won' get paid right away which can mean 5 months and not 6 weeks like me

Work without being paid? No way Jose. But if I couldn't find a paying job I'd do some volunteer work for an organization or cause I believed in.

I would accept it if she was getting unemployment but to work for nothing is affecting the household. If I was her husband it would be a HUGE FIGHT because she would be LEANIG TOO MUCH on my income while she is working for free until WHENEVER!!-lol

Uh, excuse me, but that is what being married is all abt...the good and the bad. For richer and for poorer. You make it sound like she is TAKING HIS MONEY. Whatever he makes is hers as well. What she makes is his as well. As long as her husband didn't have an issue with this, you shouldn't worry abt it.

I guess she didn't want to look for other work. And if he has a problem with it, it is probably because he feels like we do...no one should work without a contract, period. I highly doubt it is because he doesn't want her "lean on him" how ridiculous a statement to make.

Hey, that's life. And if you are married, that's life too. What if she got real sick and couldn't work? Same difference. What if HE lost his job and couldn't get a job? Same difference.
Dean Winchester 02-27-2008, 11:23 PM can't she get the boss and company in trouble if they refuse to give her retropay?
Max Whittaker 02-27-2008, 11:30 PM There is no reason to think she won't get retropay.

That's what I mentioned before. She can go to the labor board. Still, I don't understand how a company can have an employee if there is no binding contract. What if she were to get hurt on the job before that contract comes up? I can't speak for Philadelphia, each state is different, but the labor board I am sure would be interested in her matter if she talked to them.

Yeah that's a good point, She could work the entire month of March and April and get hurt in May.
