after reading an article on american idol simon cowell's outburst on the oscars and the US film industry, i just wanted to start a discussion about tv shows verses movies, aka small screen verses the big screen and for you to decide which one is your personal favourite and why.

I enjoy tv better than movies. But don't get me wrong, I love movies too. I just watched To Kill A Mockingbird and Taxi Driver and really enjoyed myself. The way I see it, movies are longer along with a whole lifetime story being jampacked into a one-two hour showing. With t.v they are only half-whole hour stories in weekly doses. So you need more patience with movies.

I prefer tv shows to movies. There are so many different shows from comedy to drama that you can view in 30 minutes to an hour, it just works out better for me. But I do manage to watch a movie every once in a while.

depends on my mood. Sometimes I want to watch a movie, other times I might be in the mood to watch episodes of a show

While I love classic movies and foreign cinema, 90% of what Hollywood churns out now is crapolla......mind you, if it werent for documentaries ( & Corner Gas), TV wouldnt be worth much anymore either.

Since I didn't see any of the movies nominated in the major categories, it's painfully obvious that I spend more time parked in front of my TV than in a movie theater.

But, i try to watch as many DVDs as I can.

I love certain movies and certain TV shows, and the rest is ---blehhh--- or so-so whether it's on the big screen or the small one.

But at my age and married status, going to the flics just isn't compelling... So in that sense I prefer the small screen. Thanks to VHS and DVD. :happyface

TV Shows. I've never been a big movie fan. To watch movies, I have to be pretty much a fan of one of the stars or the subject.

If you asked me 20 years ago I would have said tv easily but I'm probably split between the two. Although I didn't know anything about this years award nominees, I have a huge movie collection and it's a lot bigger than my TV Collection. Plus I just don't think today's tv shows as a whole are as good as they used to be.

That's a tough one, but I'll have to choose TV shows. I love movies, but they do take up more time than a TV show that lasts 30-60 min and I usually have to be in the mood to watch a movie. With a TV show, I can just turn on the tv or pop a tv dvd in the dvd player and watch a show anytime and enjoy it.

for me personally, having endured a childhood where my parents couldn't afford much and the fact i have never been to a cinema as a kid and a teen, i'd go for tv shows. the problem with movies is that whilst all loose ends are tied up and there tends to be a happy ending, there seems to be less opportunities in character development and so we don't get to them see develop, change and grow properly as people. tv shows, especially sitcoms are different- they last for something like 20-25 episodes per season, and whilst each one lasts for 20-25 mins, with the remaining mins allocated to ads, there is more scope for characters and storylines to develop, for them to grow and for us to see them change overtime, as the series progresses. which is why i prefer tv shows. well sitcoms to be precise, and cartoons.

with films, once you've seen it, the journey is over, sooner before it started

in fact mikey 90% of what the tv and movie industry subjects us with is total crap. i preferred it during the 80s and 90s when back in those days things were all so simple, and yet so many quality shows and films came out

Over the last 50+ years, I have seen a lot of movies and a lot of episodic TV.
I voted for TV shows, though, because I have watched much more television
than motion pictures (including movies on TV) over the last five decades. I
just want to add that "classic" TV (i.e., shows from the '50s, '60s and early
'70s) is--on the whole--better than more recent and current shows. There
was more originality, for one thing. Nowadays, almost every show is derivative of something that came before (or repetitive of some popular trend). And there were fewer commercials and the credits weren't squeezed
down to microscopic size in order to insert some promo.

As for movies, the technology has certainly improved (esp. animation and
special effects). Unfortunately, I can't say the same for the scripts. The
studios still haven't learned that the story is more important than the
tools used to tell the story. For example, every new animated movie uses the same computer generated images to the point that it is hard to tell the characters in one movie from another. Another trend is the tendency to
cast celebrities as the voices, instead of real voice actors. So, once again
I would have to choose--for the most part--the films of the past over the
newer ones. But that's just my opinion.

i do find it sad though that with animated films, many companies such as pixar have completely given up on 2D animation and are willing to sacrifice that in favour of computer graphics and unoriginal stories and plots. i grew up with 2D animation and many of the classic cartoons from hanna barbera, warner bros, filmation, disney to name have been in 2D. as for the voice actors, it seems to me that in this day and age audiences in particular don't care about the standard or quality of the story, just as long will smith or brad pitt for example is one of the celebrity voices of the characters. but yeah, you're absolutely right on all accounts

Theres a reason that voice acting in NA has gotten so poor, the classic cartoons had actors trained in RADIO acting (Something virtually non existant today), if you have an ACTRA card, you can do voice-acting, with no special training.......the art is alive and well in Japan though, where seiyuu (voice actors) have to do a 2 year course with voice, singing, pantomime and projection (imagining yourself into a character in your mind) training before they are allowed to step to the mic.

I'll take 2-d animation over 3-D anyday!
