Well my more than 7-year-old 27" TV is in the process of dying. The picture gets scrambled after watching for a little while and then goes out completely. It's slowly getting worse. I was already planning to buy a new TV later this year before the DTV switch in a year, but now the process is being expedited. Has anyone bought one recently? I'm looking at a flat screen between 32-40" or so, and also not sure whether to go for a Plasma or an LCD. Any suggestions? I don't want anything really expensive, but I also don't want to buy a piece of junk. I've already read so much on the internet and my head is spinning.

I don't think you can go wrong with Sony, Sharp or JVC.

Take my advice, avoid RCA.

I bought a 27 inch Olevia HDTV from Circuit City back about 6 months ago while it was on sale, and I absolutely love the darn thing.

i've got a 27 or 29 inch flat screen tv (i can't remember) that my parents got me about two years ago. it's toshiba. the picture is AWESOME & i haven't had any problems with it.

the tv we've got in our living room is bigger & it's sony. that one's really nice. definitely better than the one i have in my room.

My dying TV is a Sharp so yeah. I figure as long as I go with a well-known brand it's probably a good deal. I'm going to check out the local stores first thing tomorrow.

I have a 32" Vizio and I love it. Looks great in SD too most of the time. Definetly check out the cheaper brands like Olevia and Vizio.

I think they're worth it. HD looks wonderful, the sound at times (depending on your program naturally) sounds theater-like, SD DVDs look great! I don't have HD satellite, but if you don't stretch the pic widescreen, it looks good too (again, sometimes it depends in the program you're watching). Menus are easy to use and navigate. Never had any problems with it and I've owned mine since July 2007.

On mine at least, the word VIZIO is on the bottom and it will glow orange when the TV is off, so if small lights annoy you in the dark, just a word of warning. But if not, definetly check them out.

we have a Sony 24" flat screen, and it's great!

If you're a gamer, look at LCDs, if you like movies go for the plasma. LCDs appear to be sharper with brighter colours, however, they tend to "trail" when you're watching sports, etc.

We've got a 50" Pioneer plasma. After almost a year of researching and comparing, it was a very close call between Pioneer or Panasonics. I'd say for the best bang for your buck, go Panasonic. They're the leader in plasma and have issued the most generations so they know what they're doing.

I wouldn't give you house room for a Hitachi. Faded pieces of garbage that have many pixel problems.

And if you're considering a 42", I'd recommend spending a little more now that the prices have dropped a go for a 50". Many of our friends who bought 42" are disappointed and wished they had gone for the larger size. (even in a small room).

We'll be getting a 65" soon - just been waiting for the prices to fall on them.

Unfortunatley, none of them have built-in DVD players. So if you're looking for that, you'll have to look elsewhere.

I have always had good luck with RCA and Sony. Don't buy a Philips. I made the mistake of doing so and it died after 4 years.

Almost everything Philips makes is junk that dies too soon.

Well, the TV was working pretty well most of the time but would mess up occasionally, so I delayed buying one, but finally bought yesterday. I went with a Vizio! They were really marked down at my Sears, and I couldn't pass it up. I only have regular cable but with a built-in HD tuner I have discovered 4 scrambled HD channels of ABC/CBS/NBC/FOX hidden in the 100's which is AWESOME! :D
