View Full Version : How did MTV get away with showing this Pointer Sisters video in the 1980's?
Dean Winchester 02-22-2008, 03:10 AM warning: not suitable for children

everyone knows I'm So Excited, more of you have done it karaoke than will ever dare admit. But earlier my friend Milton (who is 40) told me about when he was a teenager, seeing this video on MTV and nobody ever believed him when he saw June Pointer showing more than intended when she gets out of the tub roughly 56 seconds into the video.
The video is blurry, but I do believe that is what I think it is. This song was a major hit for The Pointer Sisters and I'm sure this video was showed countless times. How the hell did they get away with this, considering a brief Janet nippleflash almost started World War III?
Zoneboy 02-22-2008, 03:33 AM One things for sure, That clip didn't come from MTV but here's the same video in it's edited form. This appears to be an early MTV airing because the director's name isn't mentioned along with the title and artist. It might also be from VH-1 but I'm not sure.

Dean Winchester 02-22-2008, 03:37 AM hmmm, it might've been one of the first videos that got edited. He swears he saw June in all her glory at least once back when he was a teen and for years nobody believed him. I guess someone finally caught it after so long and edited it out to a more family-friendly version.
vtunie 02-22-2008, 03:43 AM I remember this!!!! from 1984. But MuchMusic (like MTV, in Canada) played it unconcerned.
Mind you, I think it's really easy to forget just how loose things were once.
SBTB Geek 02-22-2008, 03:54 AM Such a random shot. I wonder who's idea it was.
88survivor 02-22-2008, 09:25 AM Well, didn't the Pointer Sisters actually lived through the 60s-70s? That was the "hairy" era with the women's lib movement where they didn't shaved their armpits or their you know what's down there. I guess she felt she didn't have shave down there anymore.
Ireneparalegal 02-23-2008, 12:29 AM Ok, at what point in the video did this occur and what exactly are we looking at? I mean, is it the chest area or somewhere below?

0:56-0:57 when June is getting out of the tub, look below the towel, didn't go low enough

      And why on earth didn't she wear panties or a bikini bottom?????? How stupid to be really naked in a bathtub for a video!!!
Dean Winchester 02-23-2008, 12:45 AM someone else on YouTube pointed out in the comments section that 0:13-0:14 into it, you may or may not see her nipple as well when she's soaking in the tub. Oh well, if she showed vajayjay, why not nipples too?

I was actually expecting to see a breast in full, not vajayjay.
vtunie 02-24-2008, 01:20 AM I was actually expecting to see a breast in full, not vajayjay.
Well, strictly speaking all you see is the pubic hair (am I allowed to say this?), not what it covers.
But -- since I admit to seeing it often on Canadian television in daytime 24 years ago -- I may as well admit that I found it quite... shocking. :)
About the 0:13-0:14 view: that part was already edited a bit in the Cdn. video. It was blurred. But the shot at 0:56 was not.

Now now, Irene - let's not be overcritical!! Nudity has its place in all forms of entertainment. Just ask Janet Jackson.
Ireneparalegal 02-25-2008, 06:42 PM I can't help but hear this lyric/song in my head in regards to this video:
"Bush bush in the bush..."
Unless you are from the 70's, the song means NOTHING. And no, it has nothing to do with a bush in a garden nor the president.
88survivor 02-25-2008, 07:04 PM That's Musique......that song was about...**beep**
Ireneparalegal 02-25-2008, 07:05 PM That's Musique......that's song was about...**beep**
Thank you. Yes it was.
88survivor 02-25-2008, 07:11 PM Gotta love those 70s disco songs with the hidden sexual content, masturbation, sexual intercourse, straight lovemaking, gay lovemaking, etc. I tell you, the disco era was insane. My parents live through those decades and dance Saturday Night Fever moves.

That was my era as well. Indeed, those disco songs were filled with all kinds of innuendos. ;) So naive I was...WAS being the operative word here.
88survivor 02-25-2008, 08:31 PM But we can't forget the 80s. Don't forget some of those raunchy songs in the 80s. A great example by the Pointer Sisters is Automatic....that song spells "Sexual Stimulation" especially the lyrics. That's Ruth saying to let your virginity defenses down and let the man use you. Though I'm So Excited does spell "H-O-R-N-Y"....
Look what you're doin'to me
I'm utterly at your whim.
All of my defenses down.
Your camera looks through me with it's x-ray visions
And all systems run aground.
All I can manage to push from my lips
is a stream of absurdities.
Every word I intended to speak winds up locked in the circuity.
No way to control it
it's totally automatic
Whenever you're around.
I'm walking blindfolded
completely automatic
All of my systems are down
Dean Winchester 02-25-2008, 08:38 PM you can't talk about sexual 80's music without Prince. Hell, we have stickers on our albums now because of him. I do find it funny that Tipper lost it over "Darlin' Nikki" tho. Imagine if she had heard "Head" or "Let's Pretend We're Married" or "Lady Cab Driver". "Darlin' Nikki" was tame and kid-friendly compared to some of the other songs Prince had out circa 1980-1982

We have stickers because of TIPPER GORE, not Prince. We had many, many songs before Prince that were considered lewd and crude. The difference is that Tipper happened to buy the Purple Rain soundtrack and when she heard DARLIN' NIKKI she flipped.
Prince was/is all abt sex. I remember when he originally wanted his former girlfriend/protege Vanity (Denise Matthews) to refer and be called VAGINA. Denise said no thank you and decided on Vanity instead.
Dean Winchester 02-25-2008, 09:14 PM I just find it funny she got so offended by Darlin' Nikki though, it probably isn't anywhere near a top 20 dirtiest Prince songs.
Some of the Vanity 6 songs were pornographic, even Janet never came close to the sluttiness of "Vibrator"
Ireneparalegal 02-25-2008, 09:27 PM Well, I am sure Tipper hadn't purchased any other music by Prince until Purple Rain. And from what it appears, she was selective abt the music she purchased for herself and her children. She really purchased the soundtrack for her child, not herself, and when the soundtrack was playing, that's how all that came abt. I can't imagine Tipper ever listening to anything of Prince's prior to Purple Rain. She was in for a rude awakening.
88survivor 02-25-2008, 09:57 PM Tipper Gore that can shove that where the sun don't shine. She was a nuance since Day 1.

shouldn't Tipper have figured maybe Prince wasn't appropriate for her little child (even tho I was five and LOVED Purple Rain) by the fact it was the soundtrack to a R rated movie, or that Prince was naked in the tub at the start of the When Doves Cry video, etc...
Purple Rain is one of Prince's tamer albums of the 80's IMO, I have a feeling she would've died of a massive aneurysm if she bought her kids a copy of Dirty Mind to play with

I think her child was actually 12 years old when she bought the soundtrack. I don't think she ever looked at a Prince video either. The movie having an "R" rating doesn't mean much when it comes to music. Bette Midler's movie THE ROSE was R-rated (rightly so) but the soundtrack is awesome and can be enjoyed by people of all ages. I am sure we can list some "R" rated movies and see the soundtracks for them and find them appropriate for listeners of all ages.
Tipper NOT BEING AWARE was her whole issue for the stickers. She had NO IDEA abt Prince and what he was all abt. She figured parents needed something to inform them of what their kids were listening to or wanting to listen to. I remember her saying that she heard the songs on the radio and she loved them. Her child was listening to the radio and told her how much they loved the soundtrack from "that movie." She wanted parents to be aware of what was out there as she had no clue abt what Prince was selling and what he was all abt.
