View Full Version : does anyone else think the internet has taken away excitement for a new cd?
Dean Winchester 02-20-2008, 05:49 PM Being born when I did, I consider myself lucky enough to just squeeze by in remembering the months that would build up in anticipation for a new album by Michael Jackson, Madonna, Guns N Roses, Janet Jackson, Prince, U2, Aerosmith, Whitney Houston and the other superstars of the late 80's/early 90's. Back then, it was so heavily guarded and nobody heard the albums until the day they hit shelves, and how exciting it was to finally go to the stores and purchase them.
Yet, there are a lot of albums coming out soon I'm anticipating (Madonna, Mariah, Portishead, R.E.M., Donna Summer, Coldplay, Beyonce are just a shortlist), yet albums can leak online weeks in advance that there's no longer the type of anticipation that builds up the way when Michael Jackson put the Bad album or Madonna released Like A Prayer. Like I am listening to Janet's new album even tho it doesn't hit shelves for another week. Granted, downloading is controversial, but nonetheless, the fact that knowing you can listen in advance is so tempting and it almost cheapens the excitement that used to build up in the 80's and 90's when an artist you loved had a new album about to drop and there was no temptation or anything outside of maybe the leadoff single that you'd hear before the album hit the stores. Anyone else agree?
coffield3 02-20-2008, 06:03 PM I know what you mean. i use to buy loads of cd's years back, now i buy very few, i buy all my favorite band and artist album's i love cover art etc.
It is just so easy to download them then stick them on your mp3 player or burn them off. I use to look foward to the latest single coming out or album, these days i dont, due to the darn internet
Hope that make's sense ;)

MTV is kind of at fault for no longer playing videos. I remember the days when MTV would world premiere the brand new video by an artist and it was the first time you heard the song and there were days of commercials leading up to the world premiere. Now the song will show up on Perez Hilton or something in mid-afternoon.

I feel a little sorry for younger music fans who'll never understand hearing that ___ is about to release a new song and have to wait to hear it. I still remember the anticipation for Madonna's Like A Prayer and Vogue videos and Michael Jackson's Bad and Black Or White videos. We waited weeks with brief snippets in commercials showing what we're going to see what they had in store, and of course, everyone was watching the moment they premiered. Now if a big icon superstar has a new song to drop, we'll hear it on Perez the second someone gets ahold of it.

OMG, ok first you all know I am a 70's girl. My era consisted of albums and 8-tracks. It turned into cassettes and eventually CD's. But anyways, I remember when MTV hyped the hell out of Prince's new single RASPBERRY BERET. The week before they were going to air the premiere of it, we heard abt it over and over. Finally they aired it. And then MTV aired it hourly EVERY HOUR ON THE HOUR for 24 hours. Man, that was awesome to be able to see the video and check out the WHOLE video and notice something you missed the first time or second time. I think back to that time of MTV and wonder WHAT THE HELL WENT WRONG???? IF IT AIN'T BROKE, WHY FIX IT?

even tho I was five, I remember it!! My older sister had moved out but she knew how much I loved Prince (she had the Purple Rain cassette and I loved it so much she bought me my own copy.... my mom wasn't amused) that she called just to tell me that MTV was showing Raspberry Beret at the start of every hour.

Wow, you remember that? Good memory. ;) I can't stand that song of Prince's anymore. His Liza Minnelli hairdo in that video didn't help much either.
