IN THE two years since the end of her her nine-year run on Everybody Loves Raymond, Patricia Heaton almost gave up hope of working in TV comedy again.

"There was a whole year or two where very few multiple-camera sitcoms were being picked up, and where I am right now in my life with my four children, I just can't work the long hours that are required by a single-camera show," Heaton says.

"But I was in New York doing a play last winter and the (Back to You) script came across my desk, and it was so good."

For a while Heaton feared she may have had all her good luck with Raymond and none of the projects she was associated with in the future would be attractive to TV bosses.

After Raymond wrapped, the American Broadcasting Company passed on a sitcom that Heaton had developed and a documentary she produced and her husband, David Hunt, directed, had trouble finding a distributor.

"It was like I had been the queen of a planet where everyone loved me and did everything I asked, and suddenly I was back home on Earth," she told The New York Times.

"I wasn't worshipped any more."

Back to You, which premiered on Channel 10 last Wednesday, stars Heaton as Kelly Carr and Frasier star Kelsey Grammer as Chuck Darling, a pair of local news anchors with a tenuous relationship.

"I love the relationship between Kelly and Chuck," Heaton says. "They're really at loggerheads a lot and fighting, but they're very similar, so I think there's an attraction there."

To prepare for the role, Heaton watched Anchorman a couple of times and found YouTube to be a major source of inspiration.

"I did YouTube and saw some different local anchors and just watched to sort of get the gist of what's going on outside of the national networks and how people look," she says.

"There's a certain way anchors speak. There's a musicality to the way they do their (adopting her anchor tone) 'top stories tonight'.

"There's sorts of inflections they use and the way they nod their head to kind of punctuate a sentence."

Heaton says after Raymond ended she was hoping to do another comedy because "it's fast and the response is immediate".

Those are also reasons why she wanted to stick with the multi-camera shooting format.

"All of us who work in this format understand that this is the only type (of TV) where you get the laugh-out-loud humour," Heaton says.

"It's like being in a theatre – the audience is sharing the experience with the actors, whereas single-camera is very kind of private and smaller moments.

"Often, when I watch a single-camera show, I might think it's funny, but I rarely laugh out loud.

"Look, we all have stressful lives, and it's not like we're saving the world or curing cancer or doing brain surgery, but there is something to be said about giving people a half-hour of a little joy."

SHUNNED . . . Patricia Heaton was shunned after Everyone Loves Raymond finished.
