Can anyone tell me how to take screen caps either from a DVD playing on the computer or an online video, like something from YouTube?
Hopefully I don't need some special software...

To take them from a DVD you need to download VLC Media Player, it's free and easy to use. I love it! :D

I think so, I'm pretty sure that's where I got mine. If not, google it and you'll be able to find it.

My beef with VLC player is that I haven't figured out how to advance one frame at a time. Although it does play more video formats out of the box than anything else I know of, so it is very convenient to have it.
For screen caps with frame-by-frame advance, there's a program called "Windows Media Player Classic". Despite the name, it in no way interferes with the usual WMP; in fact, it ships as a single file (no installation program), and the source is open so you know it's absolutely secure.
