View Full Version : I had a nosebleed whilst I was on the bus!

it was awful. i was on my way home from central london, whilst i was travelling on the bus my nose started bleeding. it was embarassing. i tried tilting my head back and pinching my nose. it took a while for it to stop. when it did it was only for a few seconds until the bleeding started again. thankfully now, i am feeling okay. does anyone know of any other methods in dealing with nosebleeds other than tilting the head backwards? thanks. also has anyone else here had a similar problem and if so, how did you deal with it?

Sorry to hear about that, I know it must have been embarrassing for you. Tilting your head back & pinching your nose is the only thing I know of.

Actually, tilting your head back is the worst thing you can do, it opens the jugular and permits more blood to travel to the head, the best thing is to tilt the head DOWN , pinch the nose and if possible, apply ice to the back of the neck, which slows blood flow to the head.

Believe it or not, I've heard that you actually pinch the area between your nose and upper lip (the philtrum) and that stops it. Probably something to do with the blood vessels that feed the nostrils.

Do you get them often? I remember there was always the one kid in class in public school who'd get nosebleeds often. Guess some people are prone to them. Take care for the next day or two though and bring a hanky or extra tissues with you!

Yep - that's the standard first aid treatment. You certified Mikey?

I hear ya! I took a CPR course at work but it was like 20 years ago. We didn't use dummies, we used logs! ;)

Full certification courses are offered free at my new work so I'm going to get on the list (apparently there's a 3 month waiting list for it). Pretty popular.

I could show them how to do the Heimlich and cpr on a pomeranian though - I've had lots of practice at that.

i didn't have any ice on me at the time, mikey. just a bottle of water and plus i had to use it to wash the blood that was on my face

i get them during the summer when its really hot- which is why i hate summer for a particular reason and so, i don't know if its to do with that. i remembered a couple of years back when i got one, as i was walking back home- this was during the summer, it was 90 degrees plus- and the bleeding started. thankfully, someone noticed me in the street and gave me some tissues. also, i've realised by tilting my head backwards, i also end up swallowing more blood down my throat- which is disgusting and gross, i know

but i was on the bus at the time and so if i had tilted my head forward, can you imagine me standing there and surrounded by a small pool of blood? i think not. at home, whenever this happens i run into the bathroom and tilt my head forward into the sink with the tap running, so i can allow the blood to come out instead of me having to look up into the ceiling

Well, it's not appearances that count here, but making sure you stop the nosebleed as soon as possible; so, don't tilt your head back...anyway, I'm sure you arent the only person in London who gets nosebleeds; no one is likely to make fun of you :).........Btw, I get them frequently, also (Although, Ive been getting them less often the last couple years, fortunately)

Nosebleeds can be caused by dryness in the nasal cavity (among other things). If that's what's causing yours, a humidifier at night can really help, use distilled water in it. Regular use of a neti pot might help keep things moist too (you can google that to see what it is and how to use it if you don't know). Vitamin C helps keep tissues moist, and smoking really dries the nasal cavity out. Aspirin can interfere with blood clotting so you don't want to take unnecessary aspirin if you're prone to nosebleeds, and if you have hypertension that can cause nosebleeds too so those with hypertension want to follow a low-fat, low cholesterol diet. :)

My sister use to get them often when she was younger, i remember one time we were on holiday in spain, me and my sister use to share a room next to our parent's, anywoo one morning i woke up and i looked over to my sister who was sleeping and her pillow (which was white) was covered in blood i mean completely covered, it looked like she had been shot in the head, blood everywhere, she had a heavy nosebleed during the night. They are strange.

i eat oranges and satsumas so they must count as vitamin c, although i don't smoke myself and i rarely take an aspirin. i assume it is down to the level of humidity in the air because, even though it was a relatively cold day, it felt slightly warm, well for me it was that is. btw, what is a humidifier? don't think we have those things here in the UK

I hate when things like that turn out to be not true! Geez, I never knew that about not tilting your head back.

Last summer I had about 3 nose bleeds in about 2 days but I never found out why. A friend of mine told me it meant high blood pressure, but now I'll probably find out that's not true either.

Well, I'm no doctor but either way, getting your blood pressure checked is always a good thing........most pharmacies have a free testing machine if you find a trip to the Dr too much trouble :)

A humidifier is a machine with a wet disc and fan built in, that regulates the humidity in a room (They can also be bought in a version that connects directly to the central heating furnace....although, I guess few homes in UK have those)

A vaporizer would work too if that sounds any more familiar...the idea is to add a little warm moisture to the air that you're breathing so that the nasal membranes develop a protective mucus membrane so they stay moist and don't dry out causing a nosebleed.

One time the kid down the street got conked in the head with a golf club and there was a teeny tiny cut in his head- like a millimeter long- and it bled so profusely it scared the crap out of me...I was babysitting him! He soaked three thick bath towels with blood. It's amazing how much blood we carry around in our head.

When i woke i acted like a maniac, i screamed and ran into my mums apartment, i told them what i saw, when they were getting up i ran back to my sister and realised it was a nosebleed, my little sister sitting up in bed crying i grabbed her and told her it was fine, it was my reaction that was worse lol.

I had a nosebleed a few weeks ago when i woke up while it was it still coming out.I didn't notice until shortly after, but my t-shirt sleeve was wet, so I rolled it back and there was blood on my arm.I don't even get how that's even possible my head could have faced that way for blood to drip down on a big part of my sleeve.I took pics of my nosebleed. Was the first thing I wanted to do when I woke up with it.

My friend said putting a penny on your forehead works. Is this true?He said it worked for him when his uncle or whatever did it to him.

Hot girls with nosebleeds is awesome.

lol - they probably don't even have them in the UK - the last thing you guys need is more moisture in the air!

Hmmmm, more in the summer eh? Have you ever had your blood checked? Heat thins the blood out so to me, if you get more in the summertime, it could have a connection. Not saying you're a hemophiliac (sp?), but still may have a tendency. My ex bleeds like mad whenever he even has his teeth cleaned. Turns out the walls of his veins are extremely thin (he even will have blood in his urine, yet there's no illness or disease). It's just a thought, but if it's bothersome, I'd run it past your doctor the next time you're there for a checkup.

I got one myself last night but I think it was because I was crying and blowing my nose so hard and often. :(
