View Full Version : Favorite place to get a good milkshake
Kazza 02-18-2008, 03:00 PM I've figured out that in this town, the only place you can get a decent milkshake is from Jack in the Box and Arby's.
Have tried the ones from Braum's and other places but they don't compare.
I used to love Baskin Robbins when I was little but the closest one is quite a distance away.
Another place that comes to mind is Orange Julius!:p Their stuff was delicious.
TripperFan 02-18-2008, 03:16 PM Dairy Queen is still the place for me. There's one in town near me and I ask for "extra chocolate" and they do it at no extra charge. They rock!!!
I used to like McDonald's, but when two girlfriends got botulism from sharing a skake that did it for me. Don't know if anyone remembers, but there was a time in the late 70s they used to just call them "shakes" on the menu. Turned out they didn't even use milk or cream in them - that's why they couldn't call them "milkshakes". Turned out my girlfriends were told at the hospital that they thickened them with bacteria. Under the law they could do this - a certain level that wouldn't hurt you, but this location went overboard that day and they added enough that it made them sick from it. I'm sure I've seen them called "milkshakes" on the menu again so I guess they had to stop that but I've never forgotten it.
It ain't a good shake to me unless you can stand the straw up in the centre of it!;) And it HAS to be really chocolately! :D
(I've only eaten at Jack In The Box once since we don't have them here and yeah - I loved their cheeseburger, onion rings and shakes - yum! Just their mascot freaks me out!)

Oh no! I remember a similar experience with their ice cream sundaes; I ordered one with pineapple topping and dunno what did it but I was one busy chick in the bathroom.:o

You're kidding! Wow - I AM going to think twice about going there. I know I've felt weird after eating but luckily never had the "two-step" or hurls from them. I'll stick to the local DQ thanks! ;)
(Or my own kitchen where I use 4 huge scoops of french vanilla ice cream and two massive spoonfuls of Hersey's Syrup [you guys have better syrup in the States too - I always stock up when I'm down there] and only about an ounce of milk). I'd hate to see what the calorie and fat count is in one of those but man, they're a meal in themselves!
There's a place called Super Giant in our town that has great milkshakes.
Mikado 02-18-2008, 06:24 PM The best ones in our town are at the city's most popular restaurant, The Blue Star......they still do it on a 1950s vintage mixer in those tall metal tumblers
(Although, i'm more likely to get one at McDs, cause they are about 1/2 the price)
Augustus McCrae 02-18-2008, 06:44 PM Dairy Queen is still the place for me. There's one in town near me and I ask for "extra chocolate" and they do it at no extra charge. They rock!!!
Definately DQ!

Try your homemade shake with some Ovaltine instead of Herseys. To me it has a bit smoother taste.
Jo_Luvs_Ketchup 02-18-2008, 06:55 PM The only place around here I can get a GREAT shake is a place called Blue Ribbon. Omg their chocolate milkshakes are to die for!!!!!

OMG! The Blue Star is still there and still doing it! Good for them! Reminds me of my late aunt's restaurant she used to own in Tilbury - The Blue Bonnet. I got all the free shakes and banana splits I wanted when we visited and felt like royalty!
TripperFan 02-18-2008, 06:59 PM Try your homemade shake with some Ovaltine instead of Herseys. To me it has a bit smoother taste.
But Ovaltine is a powder right? This is Hershey's syrup in the can I use and found it smoother than Nestle's Quick (which is like Ovaltine).
I wish we could get the Hershey's Hot Fudge Sundae sauce up here but I can't find it and others (like Smucker's) just doesn't do it for me. When we go to New York, I hit Tops (Friendly!) Markets and go nuts on that stuff and Oyster crackers (which in someone's infinite wisdom, decided Canadians must not like cuz they stopped them up here sometime back in the 70s).
Dean Winchester 02-18-2008, 07:13 PM I don't think I'll ever have another shake from McDonalds again, that's just vile
InspectorExstead 02-18-2008, 07:38 PM I don't think I'll ever have another shake from McDonalds again, that's just vile
ditto!
the best milkshakes for me are from in n out though. de-li-cious!
phoebe7165 02-18-2008, 07:44 PM Another place that comes to mind is Orange Julius!:p Their stuff was delicious.
Oh wow, Orange Julius. One of our malls in the area has an OJ stand. The guy who owns it has been working there forever. I like Peach Julius, too.
In keeping with the thread, I happen to like the shakes at Hardee's(or Carl Jrs., pretty much the same thing). They're hand scooped and pretty thick. I also like the shakes at Steak & Shake. They specialize in shakes, hence the title!!:D
Number 9 Dream 02-18-2008, 08:48 PM Mmmm, I love the banana milk shakes from Checkers  They also make vanilla, chocolate, and strawberry (and once in a while they'll throw in a new flavor to try out for a limited time, like orange creamsicle )
I also love Carvel's shakes :)

You've been to the Blue Star , Cathie? :eek2: Yeah, its still here and still the most popular place in town....the front end is still a 50s diner kind of thing (though completely revamped about 5 years ago), but they built an extension in the rear with a formal dinning room, about 20 years ago; and the food is still top notch as the same family has run the place since it was built.

LOL - I was going to say - still got the stools and all? wow!
Yeah - it was decades ago granted, but I was there when we were down visiting the Detroit Zoo (used to be the nearest big one before they built the Toronto one).
Funny how 3 of us named restaurants, all the old fashioned kind with "Blue" in the title.
There's also a Bluebird Cafe in Orangeville which always reminds me of the one in the Andy Griffith show and it's top rated too (although doesn't serve shake food - it's fairly fancy stuff actually). ;)
Zoneboy 02-18-2008, 09:13 PM I haven't had a milkshake in over 5 years. :)
Mikado 02-18-2008, 09:13 PM The diner part of the Blue Star...the vintage milkshake machine is visible near the man reading the paper (you cant really see it well though)

You mean you stopped in Welland to take the old passenger train to Detroit?
(That train station was torn down in the 70s, I'll bet Blue Star got a lot of business from that)
Augustus McCrae 02-18-2008, 09:30 PM But Ovaltine is a powder right? This is Hershey's syrup in the can I use and found it smoother than Nestle's Quick (which is like Ovaltine).
Ovaltine is a powered but, to me, it taste way better than Nestles Quik. Put in about 3 or 4 big spoonfuls in with your ice cream and just a little milk and it's just like heaven!;)
TripperFan 02-18-2008, 09:43 PM You mean you stopped in Welland to take the old passenger train to Detroit?

Yep - my mother LOVED trains. Her mother and aunt lived in Tilbury and I even remember the old train station there and arriving on a foggy, rainy night just like in the old movies! Gawd that's going back now - I could only have been 4 or 5 at the time but remember it vividly. We never went to one city in particular - we stopped at towns along the way always. It was pretty cool actually.
Boy those stools sure look different from the old ones I remember there! Pretty jazzy now!~

I find any of the powders don't really mix well - that's why the syrup. It's a lot more expensive but worth it. Or I've made my own syrup at home - you just add a bit of milk to a lot of the powder, heat it a bit and stir - it seems to mix much better! (see - I AM a shake snob! :snob:)
Ireneparalegal 02-18-2008, 09:57 PM damnit!! I am craving a milkshake now!!!!!!

Yeah the place is still in the same location (about a block from the train station) , but, the station is long gone, the stools were replaced when they did the big facelift that I mentioned, but the booths are the same, theyve just been repainted to match the new purple & blue decor
TripperFan 02-18-2008, 10:18 PM damnit!! I am craving a milkshake now!!!!!!
Me too! And I have to wait until at least Wednesday night before I can get a chance to get there - it's on my week's agenda now for sure!
Darn Kazzo - this thread is going to cost me about 1500 calories now!!!

Oh, wow, Steak and Shake is the best. I haven't been there in forever. We don't have one here, but when I visit my grandmother, we always go there.
YUM.
Mikado 02-18-2008, 11:17 PM The Dunnville Grand Island BBQ where you can get the WORLDS BEST BLUEBERRY SHAKES!!! (Not to mention a great chicken & fries dinner and play mini-Golf too)
dawsongirl 02-18-2008, 11:42 PM gah...nowhere. I get them at McDonald's and DQ. We don't have Steak & Shakes here, and I don't know that I've ever had a shake there. I have to go to KC to eat at one, and I don't eat dairy out of town. But I like the place.
We used to have this cool 50s diner that would pour the milkshake on your head (into the glass of course), or you could lie on the ground and they'd pour it in your mouth. So naturally, it's now closed last I heard. ohno:
friendsfan77 02-19-2008, 12:37 AM Steak & Shake
Mikado 02-19-2008, 01:15 AM Steak & Shake
Another American chain I've never heard of (I guess)
Ireneparalegal 02-19-2008, 01:34 AM Hey Mikey, I have never heard of it either. It must be an east coast place.
ponytail 02-19-2008, 06:42 AM I used to get a great shake at Bob's Big Boy but they have since closed here. Now I go to Ruby's.

Didn't know there was something called Peach Julius around. They must be tasty too...
We don't have a Hardee's around here so I have no clue about those.
Went to Steak and Shake once and was greatly disappointed by their so called
milkshakes.
coffield3 02-19-2008, 08:53 AM The only milkshake flavour that i like is Strawberry, although i hate fresh strawberry's lol. Thought i'd share that with you

80sTrivia 02-19-2008, 05:57 PM Definitely Steak & Shake... their shakes are the best!

There's a Big Boy here. Haven't had their milkshake in years, tho. But I love their menu here... they call their chocolate milkshake the Brown Cow, and they have a grape milkshake called the, well, Purple Cow. Can't remember if they have any other milkshake flavors.
Mikado 02-19-2008, 07:49 PM The Big Boy chain totally disappeared, here in Canada, at least here down east

And thank God for that - we don't have to look at that hideous, giant boy in checkered overalls anymore!
It went the way of Ponderosa (although the ones in the U.S. were always better than the Canadian version) and Olive Garden (and why they went south I don't know since there were ALWAYS lineups out the door).
(Hey Mikey - remember The Red Barn at all?) LOL I think they finally tore the last building down about 10 years ago. They could put any other business in those things and you always knew they used to be a Red Barn joint)! lol

Last i checked there were still a couple Red Barn buildings around, though, you may be right, they did take down the one in Niagara Falls a few years ago. Man, that was the WORST food I EVER had, even the hot chocolate was unpalatable!!! :barf:

 I know! Everyone said they wouldn't eat there and I couldn't believe they stayed in business as long as they did! I think it was the cooked rat rumour that finally did them right in. Don't know if it was true, cuz I think rat would taste a lot better than their menu ever did!
Mikado 02-19-2008, 09:37 PM It went the way of Ponderosa (although the ones in the U.S. were always better than the Canadian version) I loved the Ponderosa, actually....It was the one place our family could afford to have a steak dinner (My bro and i really looked forward to having REAL steak every 2 or 3 weeks at the P, it was like Xmas to us :D )
Mikado 02-19-2008, 09:40 PM I know! Everyone said they wouldn't eat there and I couldn't believe they stayed in business as long as they did! Here in Welland, as i recall it, The Red Barn opened in the spring and by late fall/early winter, a realtor's agency was in the building (They are still on that lot, but tore down and replaced the barn structure years ago! )
TripperFan 02-19-2008, 09:41 PM I loved the Ponderosa, actually....It was the one place our family could afford to have a steak dinner (My bro and i really looked forward to having REAL steak every 2 or 3 weeks at the P, it was like Xmas to us :D )
I never minded it (only ate there with my boyfriend's family since mine wouldn't go - mom said the steaks tasted weird).
When we were in Florida though we ate at one the first night. We ended up going back every night we were there we liked it so much! The buffet is massive - you can get anything - and I mean ANYTHING. I'd order a la carte though - steak tips - man they were good!!! We had planned on going to other places like Tony Roma's, but couldn't pull ourselves away from the Ponderosa!

Waaaaay back in the olden days when I worked at Arby's, the one thing that people loved were the shakes. We made them with real fruit like pineapple. That one was good. I didn't understand the craze over the Jamocha shakes though. Still don't.
Speaking of shakes, my craving will be over with tonight, my daughter is bringing me home a LARGE SHAKE.
spunkygirl 02-20-2008, 07:05 PM The place I used to live, they had a restaurant called "The Lunchbox" they had the best milkshakes I have ever had. OMG I could go one for one right now :liplick:

You are exactly right. I remember that very well. I forgot where I heard it but it was pointed out that those fast food places call them "shakes" and not "milkshakes" for the reason you outlined above.
I've always preferred real milkshakes at places like sit-down restaurants (not fast food places) and ice cream places like Baskin-Robbins.
A restaurant near me called Abe's Deli has good ones. Their full menu is on the website: http://abesdeli.com
However, I also like making my own. I began by making milkshakes, but now it is vanilla malts...
3/4 cup of milk
6 scoops of vanilla ice cream
3 tablespoons of malted milk powder
1 teaspoon of vanilla extract
Mix in blender
Whip cream on top (when I have it in the house)
Sometimes I add Hershey's syrup for variety.
RoryGilmore 02-22-2008, 01:47 AM I've had a good one at a local Olive Garden
Steak n shake of course
Dairy Queen
and as a last resort if I gotta craving and DQ's drive thru is either crazy or I'm broke, McDonald's

Ugh, me too, and I haven't had one in ages. I always go for Vanilla though.
Here in this lame town, we only have Jack's, BK, and McDonald's for shakes.
