View Full Version : Martin Short Caught Up In Mid-Air Argument With Lucille Ball

Actor Martin Short was once involved in a mid-air argument with Lucille Ball, after the legendary actress accused him of repeatedly kicking her seat.

Short and his friend were amazed when Ball and her manager sat in front of them in first class on a flight between New York and Los Angeles in the mid-1980s.

But Short, who starred on SCTV at the time, was shocked when Ball started to complain about his behavior, resulting in his being asked to move to business class.

He says, "About 20 minutes into the flight she gets up - I'm sat behind her - and turns around and says, 'Excuse me.' And I'm thinking, 'Oh my God, Lucille Ball's recognized me.' She goes, 'You've kicked the back of my seat about three times. Will you stop doing that. Thanks.' So I don't get it. Then about 15 minutes later she gets up and says, 'Look. I asked you nice before and I'm going to ask you again - stop kicking the back of my seat.' I've done nothing. I didn't know what was going on. About 15 minutes later after that, the stewardess comes up and says, 'I've been asked by someone on the plane if you two (Short and his friend) would keep it down a little bit.'

"So I, trying to make my point, say, 'I know where that's coming from, it's coming from the couple in front and they've been obnoxious since the start of this flight.' At which point Lucille gets up again and says, 'Look, you kicked the back of my chair 15 times...' And I was scared; this is not the Lucille I knew. So I said, pointing at her, 'You're a sick lady,' or something like that. She looked at me and went, 'Barry!' And the guy with her came up and said, 'What are you pointing at little boy?' And he grabbed at my finger. The stewardess came up and suggested - it was a packed first class - that we move into business."

Ball died in 1989 aged 77.

You provide no attributions for this story, written nearly 19 years after Lucille Ball's death -- long after she has had the ability to respond with her side of the story, or sue if this is a fabrication. What tabloid are you sourcing for this story? Are you just rumor-mongering, or can you prove this was already written about before she died when she had a chance to respond? Are there are other witnesses?

I hate when people kick the back of my seat.

Oh, I'm sooo sure you were planning to provide these links before I wrote that. Curiously, this part of the Conan interview was omitted from the gossipy tabloid story you posted awhile ago: "Since then, Dick has acknowledged we were loud and she was right."

And you haven't demonstrated this story was ever made public while she was still alive, not that it matters now that Martin is indicating "she was right" and he was wrong. I get the feeling you were just trying to show us Lucy was a bitch? Well I'm a bitch, too, so be careful. :angryfire

That story is a riot Brian! Not surprising at all either. I heard that Lucy could be a real bitch. Martin Short didn't retract his story either. When he said what did Dick said, he then laughed and said, "Not really, I was just trying to soften the story because Lucy's gone. She must have been having a bad day." He also demonstrated how it would have been impossible to kick the back of her chair. As if Martin Short has nothing better to do than to make up stories about Lucy acting like a maniac on a plane.

Thanks for the story, the link and the youtube clip. Lots of laughs.

What do you expect from a woman who wouldn't even acknowledge her own flesh and blood. Denying her own grandchild her birthright and place within her family. The best day of that girl's life was the day that Grandma died. peace:

Well it's not that clear that's what he meant because he said a lot of other stuff in between. But as I said, show me where this story ever came out while she was alive and had an opportunity to respond. Lucy was fearless and never afraid to speak her mind, but I don't think she would waste her breath complaining about someone unless they were annoying her. Maybe she would, but I'd like to hear her side of the story first. But since it's coming up almost 19 years after she died, that's kind of impossible.

You can think it never happened. Suit yourself. I believe Martin Short. I doubt he'd make it up. Lots of stories come out after people die. Books are written. Had this been a sweet story, you'd probably love it. It's no secret that Lucy wasn't the nicest person going. Even most of her diehard fans don't deny that. As she got older, YIKES, look out.

I didn't say I didn't believe him. It's hard to determine where he's drawing the line between being serious and funny. FYI, the reason salacious books so often come out after the subject dies is because dead people can't sue!

I do believe Short, and it doesn't matter to me if you believe him, or not. I had no problem determining when Short was serious or kidding. He told the story in a humorous manner, but it was crystal clear that it happened. I've never had comprehension issues.

Too funny, you threaten Brian and tell him to "be careful". What are you going to do, TYPE him to death? Nice signature you have going on. Did you whip that up for this discussion, or you are on a crusade against gossip in general? Got anything from the bible about turning your own family away? I agree. Whether it was just the plain fact she was a bitch or just not too tactful abt speaking her mind and her peace. Sometimes you have to wonder though, at what line is it considered a bitch and when is it considered speaking your mind? I sure as heck wouldn't want the back of my chair kicked. Bad enough when a child does it, can you imagine an adult?   I am sure many of the ladies here on the board have had to speak their mind WHEN WE WERE NOT BEING LISTENED TO!!!! :bash: :smash: And in those people's minds, we might be bitches. Oh well, call me a bitch then. :snob: But I always get what I ask for. ;)

Back to Lucy, I guess in her era, speaking her mind and asking for what she wanted, it was unheard of for a woman to be strong-willed. She probably had to speak her mind many times (to men) and it got to the point where she couldn't be nice abt it anymore since being nice doesn't always get you what you ask for. And getting older I am sure Lucy was not an easy person to deal with, from what I have read and heard. YIKES INDEED!!!!!

I agree for the most part, Irene; however, Martin Short demonstrated that it would have been impossible for him to kick her chair. She did have them removed too. I think Lucy was difficult throughout her life, then turned into a shrew at the end. That's what happens to some of these older, formerly pretty stars. They need to know that they're still powerful enough to throw their weight around. I think Lucy died an unhappy woman. She lost Desi decades before, and I don't think she ever got over him or his death. She aged terribly, and Gary spent more time with his 7-iron than with her, and who knows what else she was dealing with in her mind.
She may have recognized Short, had a few drinks in her, and decided to show him who's boss. I can't think of another reason why she would do that to him. I've seen it all though, through the years. People can be real creeps.

Oh I didn't read that part where Short stated that.  Short sounds like a guy who just wanted to share a story abt a fellow comedian and felt it was inappropriate to say anything sooner abt that incident. Yeah, I just searched through the thread here and found that clip. It is a riot. Martin is so damn funny.

Yeah, the Jackie Gleason remark (and story) is posted on the PBS Innovators of Television thread on General Sitcoms. I was shocked when I read the story and posted it there. It was a story that was part of the show. Yeah, you never know and it also proves that things can come out way after the fact. Here is the story. It does have a nice ending though:

Tony Orlando vs. Jackie Gleason
Being part of the “Pioneers of Television” series for PBS is a thrill for Tony Orlando. But he was almost embarrassed that the clip they showed at press tour that featured him was one from the lowest point in his career – performing with Jackie Gleason, who had insulted him and made a racist remark about the singers in his backing group Dawn.

In what was by far the longest story in a session filled with long stories, Orlando spent what seemed like 20 minutes telling the tale (a transcript of it filled four pages).

“He was not easy to work with,” said the mustachioed man behind “Candida.”

”He was the one guy in the whole time I was there that made it difficult for me, quite frankly. He was bigger than life on every level, his ego..”

In first encountering the trio, “I heard him say, ‘Who's this? ‘Amateur Night in Dixie' and these two shvatzes?’ “ Orlando says. “I was shocked that a man as great -- I admired him, he was one of my idols -- would say that.”

Orlando demanded an apology “and he said, ‘I’m out of here pal.’ ”

Things didn’t go well in rehearsal.

According to Orlando, Gleason had told him: “all right, pal. No ad-libbing. I do the ad-libbing.” Then when they were taping, Gleason kept flubbing takes and Orlando called him on it.

A dressing room meeting ensued. “And he says, "I want you to know something. The next sketch, if that happens again and you make any comment again, you're in bigger trouble than you ever imagined.’"

And the sketch, based on “Kung Fu” went to blows before an unlikely person stepped in.
Part of the appeal of this story was the way he told it out, drawing it out so long.

“I realized I now had a fight on my hands,” he says, before saying what seemed a non sequitir: “God bless Nancy Walker.”

The diminutive actress told him “I’ve had it in for him since 1949.”

Walker slugs Gleason and in another dressing room meeting, Gleason relents and fives him an autographed copy of his script. “It says, "Dear Tony, I apologize. I was wrong. You were right. How sweet it is to tell the truth, Jackie."

Soon after, they two grew close in the business, Orlando says. “For the whole time I was on television, he became my coach, my manager, and yes, he eventually apologized to the girls.

Who the hell is Claude? Claude Raines? He's deader than Lucy. You're a fine one to talk about attribution and gossip. Didn't you lie that Madonna told Letterman that she "did" NBA players? Janice posted the interview, and it was clear to anyone with an IQ of room temperature that Madonna was joking, not confessing. You little gossip monger you. For what, fear of low ratings on her TV show? Her career had been on the skids for over a decade at that point anyway. After Lucy died, Jr. let his daughter back in, but to this day, passes her off as his niece. He's his mother's son, that's for sure. Because I love I Love Lucy, it would be nice to stick my head in the sand and see Lucy as "untouchable"-- but I've heard enough stories to know there were times where she was "difficult"--esp. in the later years. Unfortunately she didn't age gracefully and was quite the drinker, possibly an alcoholic--which lays the perfect backdrop for erratic/belligerant behavior.

Because it's Martin Short I'm reserving judgment on this particular incident. I have a sour view of him after seeing how he treated Bette Davis when she was a guest on the Tonight show (1987). He was such a jerk on the show and seemed (at least to me) to be making fun of her at times. She was physically frail on the show, but mentally sharp as a tack.

I'd say you're the one who's deranged, considering you can't keep politics off the sitcom boards. I hear it's gotten you in a little bit of trouble. All you did was knock Patricia Heaton on the ELR board. That's real mature, hate an actor for their politics. If I was that way, I'd hate all of Hollywood. I know you tried your hand on the Politic's board, and you bombed worse than Lucy's offspring in the entertainment business. " Bush suck. America sucks. Cheney sucks. Rove sucks. Did I say that Bush sucks?" Get some new material, dude! I thought you Canadians were supposed to be funny.
Maybe you just don't like women, or you only go for sloppy drunk Commie broads, with bright red clown wigs, who need three hours in the make-up room, and 10 pounds of it to boot. That's it, you like old hags, which is why you're such good friends with...nah, better not.
I remember Martin Short appearing with Bette Davis on the Tonight Show. It was a riot. He was doing impersonations, and she asked him to impersonate her, so he did. Big deal. He wasn't ridiculing her. He was doing an impersonation. If you need further explanation on the difference, grab a dictionary.
The funniest joke on Bette Davis was when Letterman was beating the crap out of a dummy doll, made up to look like Davis who was a guest that night. The dummy had the same outfit at Davis, right down her hat, and Letterman was pounding away. I'll wait for the outrage on that, but I'm sure all I'll hear are crickets.

I guess I really must have hit a button with you because you're really going off the deep end now, truly grasping at straws. Is your poodle off its noodle? Is your collie off its trolley? About my Madonna comment, which you call a lie , this is specifically what I said: She's talking about . . . doing NBA players. Let's see now, she spends the interview making near constant sexual references (I'm sitting on the Top Ten list, Dave, reach down and get it!), talks about pissing on her feet in the shower, and cursing right and left, using the "F" word some 13 times, and Dave references her admission of having sex with lots of celebs. And she does say "Oh, that microphone is really long . . . speaking of the NBA" So I guess if you want to split hairs (and you obviously do), then she didn't talk specifically about doing NBA players, she only implied it strongly, among other things. Oops! You really got me there! I lied! Oh I'm such a gossip. How dare I tarnish Madonna's pristine image! She would be horrified if people ever assumed she had had sex with Dennis Rodman! omg:

Communist Lucy? Did you make an F in history class? Or perhaps you haven't seen a newspaper that's been printed since 1953. But Lucy was completely cleared by the House of all those communist charges. Perhaps you should even go back and study the whole McCarthyism saga. Or maybe you just don't understand that this is the United States and, unlike Nazi Germany, it has been our tradition to give people hearings and trials and not accept any accusation someone in authority may throw at them. Then again, you have indicated you're a Bush supporter (even now???? ), so that would explain your mindset. Well, if Lucy was a communist, I guess we had better start questioning whether her close friends, Ronald and Nancy Reagan, were true patriots. You know, guilt by association! (President Reagan was a closet communist, oh no!)

About Lucy's career being on the skids for ten years, it seems to me her career didn't hit the skids until Life with Lucy in 1986 when she was an elderly lady. Most people are long retired by age 75, you know! Ten years after 1986 she was long dead. Unless you consider only being number two in the ratings ten years after I Love Lucy as being "on the skids" or having the top-rated CBS show 14 years after I Love Lucy. Yeah, those skids must have really hurt.

Regarding your "Frasier Crane is the longest-running sitcom character on TV" comment, grow up, really! That sounds so much like "My daddy is stronger and smarter than your daddy!" How old are you anyway? :baby:

You've made yourself perfectly clear in this thread, you hate Lucille Ball and you hate her shows. Which begs the question, just why are you here? Did you fail to realize this is an I LOVE LUCY message board? Is something not computing in your head? Maybe you're a troll? :yousuck:

As for all the other tabloid stuff you're throwing at Lucille Ball's family, who let you inside their home to find out who did what to whom and why? How are you the expert on them and their motives? Maybe this more evidence of that recent psychological study that found conservatives have difficulty processing ambiguity and only see things in terms of black or white.

One basic question: What is wrong with you, really? You're obviously a bitter and unhappy person who seems hellbent on spreading your misery to others. You know who you remind me of with all your anger-laden, gossipy and judgmental comments? Dana Carvey's Church Lady character. So since you've decided to call me as an old bag (which I can't figure out because you've never even seen a picture of me) you'll from this point forward be the Church Lady to me (your portrait attached).

In my experience, people who are as viciously judgmental as you are just trying to cover up their own guilt over some deep, dark secret they're hiding about themselves. Hmm? I wonder what it could be?:quest:

Thanks Jane, i just refuse to discuss anything with a mental midget and this character gives new meaning to the term. I now remember why i keep leaving this board, people like that who ruin it for eberybody else. And for the record, i WORSHIP America and Americans, just not the NEW America of the last seven years with Dumb and Dumber in charge.

I hear ya. I do a fair amount of overseas travel, and I tell you, it hasn't been the same since they've been in office. The kinds of things people say to me when I'm out of the country, not to mention my fear of being a target because we're so hated everywhere now. I turned down an overseas assignment last year out of fear, something that I had never felt before. It's really sad for me feeling like I should deny my nationality when out of the country in order to feel safe.

Well, that's the thing he's done that's just the worst, people all over the world used to look up to and worship Americans, now you are a laughing stock and despised thanks to people who just refuse to admit that they were wrong in getting fooled into voting those turkeys in.

If you think I'm going to read THAT mess, you're even loopier than I originally thought. Someone's got waaaay too much time on their hands. You wrote that thesis for nothing. The rantings of an unhinged person. If someone else wants to read that claptrap, be my guest, but I'll take a pass. Get a life!

I hear that. It's like my disrespect for J-Lo. I don't care for the woman. I don't wish her death or anything like that. It is just my dislike for people who cheat on their spouses. I have a hard time liking people or respecting people who do that. It is disgusting to me. She cheated on her husband Cris Judd and I lost it my respect for her. She treats marriage like a carousel ride...NEXT!!!

Anyhoo, I don't take it personal that the people I like, you don't care for. It is respect for each other on these boards and that is what you give me and I give back to you.

JaneTVFan, please drop the personal insults. Let's move on everybody. I don't want to hand out any suspensions, but I will be forced to if this continues.

Here's what TJ warned last night. Despite his warning, you're continuing to get in political shots and you're still insulting me. Every member has stopped but you. I'm reporting you. Some people only stop when they're suspended.

You know, for a woman I cherish who's been dead for twenty years, I find it shocking that we are still complaining and insulting her on her life, as if she lived a tragedy of drama and emotion. To do this on a I Love Lucy board is not only stupid, but also cruel and vicious.

So here's the problem, we need to get over this, NOW. I don't care if somebody says that "I like the shows I grew up with more than the shows that are on today", but when we complain about personal problems that have passed decades ago, we are not getting anywhere. And I'm seeing that right now with the "Lucy-Desi marriage", "Lucy arguing with cast members on set", "Gary cheating on Lucy", "Lucy living a life of tragedy", etc. We need to get over this today. What's happened has happened. You can't change the past, you can only move on. We can't live a life that gives us everything we promise. That's the problem I'm seeing with you guys, we fight over celebrities that have been long gone or fighting over current celebrities that really isn't a big deal. I'm currently on a schedule, so I can't spend a good hour posting everything I feel about this topic. I will post back if I get any replies.
