View Full Version : Updated list of 'Never aired on Lifetime' segments, longer than you might think!
wiseguy182 02-17-2008, 10:33 AM I have compiled a list of segments that, to the best of everyone's knowledge, have never aired on Lifetime. Initially, I thought this list was going to be a about a couple dozen segments, but as you can see, it is much longer. It is fun to speculate as to why Lifetime never aired these, although I think there are different reasons to different segments. Segments with a * are 'lost segments' that nobody currently posting here has to the best of our knowledge. (but we're working on it);)
This list is probably not complete, so feel free to add anything you've noticed I missed, and I can edit this post to include it. thanks.

DarkDante 02-17-2008, 12:36 PM Cool idea wiseguy - A few things:
- One segment that has not made it onto "Lifetime" which you have not listed is the case of the extortion letters in Lancaster, California.
- One segment in special 6 that was cut down significantly for "Lifetime" was Dorothy Alison - the psychic who was trying to solve the Lori Zimmerman murder case.
- Lesa Lee's segment was aired as late as 2005 - I know because thats when I grabbed it for my collection of videotapes.
Todd Mueller 02-17-2008, 12:48 PM Wow! Great stuff, wiseguy.
Couple of questions/comments:
1) Did Lifetime ever explain why they didn't show certain segments? Did the people protest or was there a specific reason? Just seems weird they seemed to purposely omit certain segments.
2) It was great having UM on Lifetime, but being an original UM fan, it bugged me how they wacked down some of the segments and cut out parts that were really cool. I realize that's part of syndication but it sucks to see some segments become a shell of their former selves.
3) Any thoughts on whether or not Spike will show cases Lifetime didn't?
justins5256 02-17-2008, 01:12 PM I have compiled a list of segments that, to the best of everyone's knowledge, have never aired on Lifetime.
Impressive list wiseguy. Here we go...uh oh...
Prestack Specials
Wanda Jean Mays
Donald Kemp
Roger Wheeler/Jai Alai murder
John Burns
Pat Mealbach
Terry Conner & Joseph Daughetery
Kyra Cook
Rolex Robbers
Robert Weeks (both segment & update)
Unabomber
Jack Lutter
George Marsh
Glen Consagra
Probably not shown due to royalties that Lifetime didn't feel like paying to Burr and Malden each time these episodes came up.
Tony Alamo
His case was resolved years ago and he has since resumed his ministry so I can understand Lifetime not wanting to show this segment.
Rogest Cain
He was legally declared dead in 1995. Perhaps his family requested that Lifetime not show the segment.
Doyle Wheeler
Donovan Jacobs sued UM because he did not agree with how he was portrayed in the segment. I suspect the lawsuit is why we never got this one.
*John Purvis (full segment)
To my knowledge, John Purvis was featured on the UM spinoff series "Final Appeal", so there never was a UM segment about him. Although, the update about his release did (strangely) make it to Lifetime.
Melvine Aprille
Melvine Aprile was caught and the children returned. I have long suspected that some of these stories involving parental abduction and custody issues are not repeated out of respect for the families once they have been solved. The Fagan, Fontes, Martin and Rhodes cases fall into this category. None of them have been syndicated to my knowledge.
Live from the telecenter (a few segments made it to lifetime, but most of the show did not)
Alcatraz special (full segment)
Well, I think it's pretty obvious why the "live" broadcast didn't make it.
Also, the original segments were 90 minutes a piece. There are a few other 2 hour and 90 minute installments that never made it to Lifetime in their entirety (5/25/94 for example). These episodes were broken up and edited down to fit the hour format.
Gulf Breeze UFO's
This story revolved around what was most likely a huge hoax orchestrated by "Ray" aka Ed Walters.
Robert Leeds
Leeds was captured and plead "no contest" to the charges against him. He got two years, and his sentence was probably up WAAAY before Lifetime acquired the series. Since Leeds maintained he was innocent, and could have very well continued working in the art field after this was all over, I can understand Lifetime not showing this one.
Robert Stack profiles 10 missing person cases
Probably cut for timing reasons. Also, this would have been a pain in the butt for Lifetime to update.
I also think this is why some of those quickie "FBI Alerts" with William Sessions and Floyd Clark never made it.
Bo Tanner
Wasn't this story on one of the 90 minute installments?
Special Alert: Joseph Krants, Martha Roberts
I have seen these on Lifetime.
*Tony Miller (both full segment & update)
This was another "Final Appeal" spinoff story, and never had it's own UM segment to my knowledge.
Drug traffickers that used a cellphone shop as a front
While probably not the reason this wasn't shown on Lifetime, this segment is so out of date it is funny.
CW Roddy
There was a lengthy update to the Bermuda Triangle story as well as the Heck family story, so I suspect this segment got bumped for timing reasons.
Dr. Browning earthquake predictions
Come on, the man said the sky was falling two weeks from the date of the broadcast. Can you see all the daytime stay at home moms and housewives freaking out and all the scuttlebutt this would generate if shown on Lifetime?
*the Bird Road Rapist
Not sure why it wasn't shown but I suppose it is worth mentioning that this guy (I think his name was Luiz Diaz) actually was innocent. He was cleared by DNA around 2005 or 2006ish.
*Ed Barbera (may be acquired soon)
I emailed Ed Barbara's defense attorney and he told me that Barbara died of cancer while he was on the run. Then Barbara's wife came forward and worked out a plea deal to where she got to spend a few months in county jail in exchange for pleading guilty to some of the charges. Since the man was technically no longer wanted (he probably died before Lifetime acquired the series), this segment becomes obsolete.
The following segments are believed to have aired early in Lifetime's run, but seemed to have disappeared in subsequent years
Bonnie Wilder
The charges against Bonnie were dropped, yet people were still calling in reports of seeing her. The police asked Lifetime to drop it. I think I read something to that effect in one of Vicki Bosma's postings.
Eva Schoen
Victor Manuel Gerena
Lesa Lee
I have these on tape from various times when they aired on Lifetime. Not sure if they weren't repeated again.
segments I'm not sure about
Julie Cross
I think Crystaldawn told me that this was shown on Lifetime, with an update in fact. I can't recall ever seeing it, but if CD says she saw it, I have no reason to doubt her.
UM 3rd anniversary special
Eh, kinda iffy. Parts of it were shown on Lifetime, such as the lengthy update on the gold supposedly removed by the government from Victorio Peak in the sixties and the update about Dave Davis' capture and sentencing, along with comments from Davis and the Mohr family.
Diabolical minds: case studies
Travis Wade Duncan
Both have been on Lifetime, in fact I think I have tapes of each.
Just wanted to add that a lot of the "lost" segments were originally packaged with episodes that were prepared for re-broadcast on NBC as repeats and were comprised largely of repeat stories. Lifetime probably didn't waste time purchasing these episodes, but we lost some good stories. Examples include Billy Hargrove & Mike Carmichael, Eric & Pam Ellender, Lester Garnier, Mario Armado, Scott Hill, Walter Wenke & Ronald Enzlo, Nevada wild horses update, Todd Mcaffee and Marlena Childress.
DarkDante 02-17-2008, 01:32 PM Wow!
1) See Justin's reply above mine. Other reasons that have been mentioned by fans over the years is that some segments (such as "Tara Calico") may have been flagged as inappropriate for broadcast on "Lifetime" at least during peak hours. In the case of the Calico segment it was only broadcasted late at night and then when "Lifetime" chose to abandon showing UM in that timeslot it the segment disappeared alltogether.
Another reason some fans have given for some segments not making it to "Lifetime" is the fact that when "Lifetime" re-editted the episodes they dropped some segments that were too long to fit into their re-edits (a further explanation of this is found in point #2 below) - "Lifetime" generally re-editted UM at whim in order to conform to time constraints.
2) The thing with the "Lifetime" edits is pretty simple and unfortunatley is not likely to change when the series heads to SPIKE. If you ever watch shows in syndication and compare them to their original broadcasts, you'll notice that in a lot of cases lines of dialog are missing and the episodes are shortened in length. ABC Family is notorious for hacking up the "90s sitcoms" like "Family Matters", "Full House" etc. and fading the show out at whim in order to add more commercial breaks.
The same thing applies here although its a bit more severe as in addition to making room for the commercial, "Lifetime" also had to make room for the updates to the various cases which when the segments were originally broadcasted on NBC were not there. Take the case of Shannon Mohr and David Davis from special #4 for instance. Davis was not found for at least a few years after the original UM segment aired. But on the "Lifetime" version there is an update on Davis' capture. This update runs around two minutes long. Therefore the two minutes that the Davis' update takes up has to be deleted from somewhere else in the broadcast.
In episodes where a lot of the cases are updated, even more time has to be excised from the original segments leading to parts being cut out. In the most severe cases, many fans believe certain episodes were not aired on "Lifetime" due to the fact they couldn't fit them in the hourlong timeslot along with the other segments and the updates. In some cases we still got to see these segments but they were transplanted into other episodes in which they did not originally air.
A good example of this would be the first regular run episode of the series from the fall of 1988 which featured "Gulf Breeze", "Gail DeLano" and "Roxanne Woodson". This episode HAS NEVER been shown in full on LIFETIME. "Gulf Breeze" has never been shown at all while the other two have been transplanted into other episodes: "Roxanne Woodson" is on the "Lifetime" version of special #6 wile "Gail DeLano" airs alongside one of the episodes featuring the S.O.S. murders.
3) Read above, Spike will be considered syndication too. What will probably happen is Spike will do their own "edits" which will deviate from the "Lifetime" edits. Again using ABC FAMILY as an example their edits to their syndicated sitcoms are different from how the shows were/are editted when they air on Nick At Nite. "Full House" is a good example of this as it airs on both networks and the edits on each network are different.
Todd Mueller 02-17-2008, 01:43 PM Dang, guys! Thanks for the AWESOME responses!!!
That was far more info than I thought I would get. Justin, thanks for the case-by-case breakdown and all the info. And Dante, thanks for the syndication explanation.
You really went above and beyond, guys. Well done... and THANKS!
crystaldawn 02-17-2008, 02:14 PM As far as Julie Cross, I initially didn't think it ever aired on Lifetime but did end up acquiring an episode that had a "Lifetime Exclusive Update" on her case. So I can't say for sure if the entire segment ever aired on Lifetime but an update on her case did.

The more I think about this whole thing, the more I realize that those late night 30 minute installments of UM probably existed so that Lifetime could show some of these "misfit" segments rather than keeping them off the air entirely. For example, I taped the Keith Reinhardt case from one of these 30 minute broadcasts, and the story was NEVER shown during the standard hour to my knowledge. Same deal with the Tara Calico story (although, I could understand that one possibly getting bumped due to content).
Some other "lost" stories I just now thought of...
- The lost love story about the stand-up comedian who was looking for a crisis hotline counselor named "Libby" who encouraged him to get help for his drug problem.
- Another lost love story about a German man looking for his sister (I forget most of the details here, but it was on a tape I got from TJ).
- Yet another lost love case about a woman named "Jackie Cooper" looking for her nanny.
- The update about Kari Lynn Nixon possibly being at that NKOTB concert.
- The Jane Doe who was a hit and run victim (originally aired as part of the fifth season premiere along with the story about the guy who fell off the wing of a plane).
- A Texas story about an amnesia victim. I want to say she thought her name was "Susan Kennedy", but I'm not sure if that is correct.
- Quick profiles of child molesters shown along with the David McLeod case.
- Quick profiles of unidentified bank robbers shown alongside that one story about an unidentified bank robber who shoots out security cameras.
- The story about the "shopping bag bandits".
segments I'm not sure about
Julie Cross
UM 3rd anniversary special
Diabolical minds: case studies
Travis Wade Duncan
Lifetime did air the Julie Cross segment, as well as the Diabolical Minds episode. The former had a "Lifetime exclusive" update added to it. In that update, it was mentioned that at least one man was convicted of her murder.
The 3rd anniversary special never aired on Lifetime, but there may have been some mention of it in one of the Lifetime reruns (any mention of the special could have been either direct or indirect).
The full segment on Travis Wade Duncan was seemingly absent from Lifetime. However, Lifetime aired the update.
justins5256 02-17-2008, 07:12 PM I was going through my notes of UM episodes I have taped and here are some more examples of Lifetime mixing up stories as mentioned by Dark. Talk about some Frankenstein creations...
The Lifetime version of "11/23/88" has the following stories
Kurt Sova - originally aired 11/23/88
Lancaster extortion update - aired 5/31/89
Steven Carlucci - from special 7 aired 5/18/88
Steve Cox - aired 11/16/88
Another version of "11/23/88"
Diana Robertson and Mike Riemer - aired 5/10/89
Priest killings - aired 11/23/88
Matthew Chase - aired ????
Dolores Valadez - aired 8/23/89
Lifetime version of 3/15/89
Lisa Kimmel - aired 3/15/89
Near Death Experiences - aired 2/22/89
Lost Dutchman's Mine - aired 3/15/89
wiseguy182 02-18-2008, 02:00 AM thanks for all of the additions/corrections guys. I'll make the necessary changes.
Dante, I had wondered about the Lancaster extortion letters and thought about putting that one down. I had a feeling the update was never shown, but I had figured that the case was shown. I'll add that one to the list. I had never seen Lesa Lee on lifetime, and I asked Crystaldawn about it, and she said it was rarely shown on there, but it sounds like it wasn't all that rare, so I'll take that one off.
Todd Mueller, Lifetime never explained why certain segments weren't shown, or weren't show in their entirety, although Justin did an excellent job of stating why they probably weren't shown. I have no idea if Spike will air remixed versions of the rare segments, but they will probably be kept off for the same reasons they were kept off Lifetime.
Justin, do you have any additional info about the Fontes child case you spoke of? I'm not familiar with this one. Regarding Robert Leeds, your explanation makes sense, but in that segment, Robert Stack profiled about 10 other missing art cases, a few which had updates, so I hope that, if the full segment was put aside, we could have at least got the other quickie profiles. I can see about the 10 missing persons/quickie FBI alerts being edited out of their original episodes, but Lifetime could have and should have put them in other episodes, even if they had to make a misfit episode. I see what you're saying about obsolete segments, and I agree somewhat, but in a way, alot of the cases that have been solved can be considered obsolete, since the intention of airing the case was to solve it, which was accomplished in these cases. James Vernon was the name of the guy who was searching for "Libby", the hotline operator that convinced him to get off drugs.

The Lancaster segment as shown on Lifetime is very odd. It is the updated version, but the segment itself is still identified as "Fraud" and there is some talk from Stack as well as an interview with a detective shown before the "update" portion begins. The entire segment was either prepared this way for broadcast on NBC years ago, or Lifetime did some serious editing on the original Lancaster story (basically cutting it to an almost insignificant "mini-story") and then inserted this update (which was the longest part of the entire segment).

I guess CD didn't put this one on her DVDs.
It has been awhile since I have watched the Jim Fontes story, but from what I remember, Fontes was a police officer from California. He came home one night to find his wife and two sons missing and a tape recorder on a table. He played the tape, and it was a message from his wife saying that she had left with another man and taken the children, and that Fontes would never see them again. I do not remember if anything else was taken, and I do not recall if their marriage had been under any stress at the time. Some time later, the wife turned up in another city with a man and the two missing sons. She was also pregnant (although I don't believe it was Jim's baby). She gave birth at home and the paramedics that brought her to the hospital thought her behavior and demeanor were odd, so they did some checking on her identification and found that it was fraudulent. Unfortunately, she and her male companion had skipped town again before the police got to them. That was the gist of the original story. Then there was an update (it might have been a week or two later) indicating that the wife and her companion had been arrested and the children were returned to Fontes. I never did see any of this on Lifetime.
Well, I don't know for sure that the reason I gave is why the Leads segment was never syndicated. It was just speculation, and the point of my post was to identify some possible reasons that these segments might be "lost", but I never claimed it to be the absolute truth. I still think it's a decent explanation though. Kind of along the lines of the Tony Alamo segment in that if Leeds returned to the art world, I'm sure he wouldn't want that whole experience tarnishing his reputation. I also think that because the segment is outdated, Lifetime could have figured that no one would miss it and so they stuck in another more deserving, and perhaps unsolved, story in it's place. As for the other paintings, yes, some of them were found. I'm a bit of an art fan myself, so I did some Newsbank searching on this story awhile back and I think a couple of the paintings are still missing too. But, this segment was tied to the Leads story originally, and if Lifetime decided they weren't going to show the Leads story, I can't imagine that they would go out of their way to salvage this part of the segment. While it would have been great to show the segment as a "public service" so that some of the missing artwork could potentially be found, I just don't think they cared that much, and they probably needed the time for that extra Huggies commercial.
Edit: Just wanted to expand a little bit on the concept of these "obsolete" segments. While I understand that technically any solved segment becomes obsolete (and Lifetime certainly gave us plenty of these) there are a few cases that while technically solved have some oddball circumstances that I think may preclude them from being rerun.
I think Bonnie Wilder falls into this category. The segment became pointless after the charges against her were dropped, yet viewers who saw the segment were still calling in sighting reports. I think it's safe to say that UM never did film a formal update to the Wilder case, so it would have been better for Lifetime to replace the segment since there technically wasn't an update they could show.
Same deal with Barbara. He died on the run, so technically he was no longer wanted by the time Lifetime got the series. I did some Newsbank research on his case but could find nothing about the resolution. In fact, the information about the resolution came from Barbara's attorney directly, and it was, I'm guessing, not big enough to make the papers. Another case where UM may not have filmed an update. So, what was Lifetime to do?
I know Lifetime does occasionally do their own updates, but I think most fans would agree that Lifetime didn't start getting involved until the shown had been ongoing in syndication for a few years. When Lifetime first acquired the series, their involvement was minimal, and these cases were early enough in the show's run that I doubt Lifetime would have gone out of their way to produce their own brand of "update" segment.
crystaldawn 02-18-2008, 09:48 AM I guess CD didn't put this one on her DVDs.
I forgot all about putting the Fontes case on a dvd. If I make volume 14 I'll put it on there.
This is awesome! Just when I thought I'd seen them all........
wiseguy182 02-18-2008, 08:34 PM I think I just remember another one: Shane Stewart and Sally McNelley, that hasn't aired on Lifetime has it?
justins5256 02-18-2008, 09:00 PM I think I just remember another one: Shane Stewart and Sally McNelley, that hasn't aired on Lifetime has it?
Yeah, I remember seeing it.
I remembered another one: Avery James Norris - the newborn abducted from a hospital in Baltimore.
wiseguy182 02-18-2008, 09:14 PM Yeah, I remember seeing it.

ok, I added Avery James Norris to the list.
I can't believe how long this list is!
justins5256 02-18-2008, 09:23 PM Was the Joey Moss segment ever shown on Lifetime? Yet another (resolved) parental abduction case.
wiseguy182 02-18-2008, 11:50 PM I checked to see which FBI alerts I had, and here they are. anyone know if these have made it to Lifetime?
hosted by Floyd Clark, fugutives profiled: Wardell Ford, Larry Chisom
hosted by Oliver Revell, fugutives profiled: Michael Louis Klein, Raymond Scoville, Michael Lassiter, Thomas Robert Geers.

I don't believe so.
I have another one that has narrated by FBI director Williams Sessions and had the following baddies: Bobbie Dennie wanted for rape and murder, Melvin Edward Mays a domestic terrorist and street gang leader, and Leslie Isben Rogge wanted for a series of bank robberies.
DarkDante 02-19-2008, 01:04 AM Oh man unless my eyes are tricking me - one of my favorite FBI alerts has yet to be mentioned. The one about Tyrone Walter Theiss and Shannon "The Bear" Smith.
Theiss was accused of killing some of his co-workers after being fired from his job working the pumps at a gas station. To my knowledge Theiss is still at large.
The kicker though is the case of Shannon "The Bear" Smith. I dunno if this is on any of CD's comps but imagine watching UM and all of the sudden this fat kid comes up onscreen I believe in his pajamas possibly with a bunch of stuffed animals around him wearing a huge grin on his face.
While the FBI narrator states "We are also on the lookout for Shannon "The Bear" Smith. "The Bear" has been accused of molesting many underage girls. In fact he has stated that molesting young girls is his hobby"
Yeah thats something to put on a resume for sure...
Stormer Phillips 02-19-2008, 03:39 AM Hello, I have the original airing of the "Reverse Sting Operation" recorded, however the local news interrupted that evening's broadcast because of an announcement by Gorbachev regarding something going on in the former Soviet Union (I'll have to dust off my old tapes and find out what exactly was going on). That would probably explain why some longtime collectors don't have it recorded. I'm 100% positive I have seen the episode repeated on Lifetime, though. It is about an undercover police officer who gains the trust of some drug dealers (in Florida???) to the point where he talks a whole bunch of wanted criminals into joining him at a celebration party. He makes a toast during the evening and thanks everyone for coming, then announces they are all under arrest! Fun stuff!

welcome to the forum, Stormer Phillips.
I'm going to send you a private message right now.

Not only that, but didn't he also keep a book of the names of the girls he had slept with, as well as future prospects? In any case, he sounds like a real piece of work.
I would be curious to know if he was caught. I have in my notes that this "special alert" aka "fugitive hotline" aired first on 1/13/95. It was repeated again on 7/7/95 but by that time the Shannon Smith profile had been deleted. The Thiess profile was still intact. In fact, I thought I remembered reading here that Thiess is still at large.

Fun stuff!
This single post made my day. Sent you a PM too.
justins5256 02-19-2008, 08:29 PM Another story that didn't make it to Lifetime was the story of Carolyn Smith who was searching for her two sons abducted by her estranged husband Chuck. She hired a PI to help find them.
Yet another "FBI alert" with Oliver Revell featuring Thomas Hickey, William McCarthy, Arthur Washington Jr. and Juan Jackson, plus an update about the captures of same.

was that the one where the husband's parents were wealthy and assisted the son in making off to various parts of the world and also put up lots of legal roadblocks for the mother? Also resulted in a record-breaking judgement for the mother. I'm sure I have this one.

Yeah, you got it. The more I think about it, I can't remember if this one made it to Lifetime or not. I have it on DVD from the NBC airing, but I watched it again and it wasn't totally foreign to me, so I don't know.

I recorded it off of Lifetime but it may have been one of those they only showed once in a blue moon.

This definitely aired on Lifetime. Taped it off of LRW a couple of weeks before they dropped the show.
I'm also about 99.99999% sure that no portion of the 3rd Anniversary special never made it to Lifetime, except maybe tiny snippets of interviews and the like.
edit: One I think you missed: the deaths of Tom Keater (sp?), the forklift driver who apparently killed his ex-coworker Tina Marcotte (again, sp on the last name), then staged his own death when others suspected him. I've only seen it on the DVD that CD sent to me, but it looks sorta like one of the CBS airings? I can't find a thing about the case online.
and I may as well keep editing away at this post: The half-hour "too shocking for regular Lifetime" episodes aired off-and-on in early A.M. slots for years, up until at least 2002-ish (maybe longer than that, too--after that, I went away to college, where I didn't have cable). These episodes also aired when a long movie cut into UM's running time on the daytime schedule: 30 minutes of UM, followed by the 2 1/2 hour movie.
justins5256 03-05-2008, 12:23 PM Wiseguy - not sure if you'll see this, but what story is this?

Yes, you're right about this (the Smith parental abduction case). I was watching a DVD of the NBC broadcast and didn't think the story looked familiar, but the more I thought about, I realized it was shown on Lifetime. I just hadn't seen it in a long time. Unfortunately, I don't believe there is an "official" list of stories that never made it Lifetime. The majority of these "lost" cases are discovered this way (ie. People who have the NBC broadcasts and notice stories that don't look familiar). This leaves a lot of room for error. Not to mention that a lot of us go out looking for these stories, so when we see something that doesn't look familiar there is a tendency to say "it never aired on Lifetime". That is why I think this thread in particular is a good idea. It allows for checks and balances and other members can chime in and offer these types of corrections.

Yeah, I've never seen the story on Lifetime. I don't think I saw it until I got that same DVD from CD. I'm pretty sure this was an NBC story though. According to the episode guide, it aired on 1/5/96 - during the show's eighth season. The CBS season didn't begin until the fall of 1997.

The original airdate for that one was 10/25/89 I believe.
Okay I found a thread where I posted some of the people profiled and whether or not they had been found. Here it is:
Julie Weflen - she is still missing. Apparently her case was covered in a book by Ann Rule titled "Kiss Me, Kill Me". Here's an article from just a few days ago:
http://www.krem.com/news/local/stori....e99159ac.html
Stefanie Stroh - Apparently she was heir to the Stroh's beer fortune. She is still missing. Convicted murdered Tommy Lynn Sells has apparently confessed to her murder but he's confessed to a ton of them.
http://www.charleyproject.org/cases/..._stefanie.html
Kyle Clinkscales - Still missing but apparently there have been a few arrests in his case:

Diana Braungardt - Still missing.

David Thies - Still missing.

Susan Cappel - Still missing.

I couldn't find anything online about Carlos Alvares, John Simmons or Lily Mae Huff. I did research these cases a year or so ago and back then found an article that stated Lily Mae Huff was never found.
They also profiled the disappearance and presumed deaths of David Tyll and Brian Ognjan. Here is a book on their very bizarre case:

TheCars1986 11-24-2008, 12:11 AM I'm pretty sure the Norman Ladner death segment was heavily cut when it was aired on lifetime. The full segment is about 15-16 minutes long and I'm pretty sure they trimmed it down to about 7 or 8.
TheCars1986 11-24-2008, 12:20 AM One more thing, I remember awhile back when Lifetime used to air UM during twelve o'clock and one o'clock they did air the entire escpae from Alcatraz episode. It was the full hour, with the diving expert that swam at the end and concluded it was quite possible that the men did indeed escape. And I'm almost positive that I've seen the John Purvis segment at least twice on a Lifetime broadcast.

I actually compared the NBC and Lifetime versions recently and they were virtually the same.

The Alcatraz special as originally broadcast on NBC was 90 minutes - 72 or 73ish minutes without commercials. Lifetime has shown an edited version that runs in an hour timeslot, but they have NOT shown the full version to my knowledge. The full version had some profiles of other convicts (Jean Marie Gagnon for example) and some updates and stories of other Alcatraz escapes and escape attempts. I have not compared the two versions, but Lifetime cut a lot of stuff.
The John Purvis story is somewhat of an oddity. It aired as an "update" but there was never an original story to begin with. My guess is that Cosgrove was shooting a segment on Purvis for either UM or Final Appeal but all these late breaking developments on his exoneration and the arrests of Paul Serio and Paul Hamwi caused them to curtail the segment to a mini-report and an update.
robbieasbury 11-24-2008, 04:24 PM I could swear that Lifetime did air the Jerry Strickland Missy Mundy case sometime in the 90's or at least an update of the case. Could anybody confirm this?
justins5256 11-24-2008, 05:34 PM I could swear that Lifetime did air the Jerry Strickland Missy Mundy case sometime in the 90's or at least an update of the case. Could anybody confirm this?
I don't know. It has bothered me too.
It was originally a part of special 5 on NBC. For some reason, Lifetime's edit of special 5 replaced the Strickland/Munday case with the case about the two women (Picard/Laferte) who were beaten and one killed in Rhode Island. I am 100% positive and confident about this as I have the Lifetime version on tape and the Strickland story isn't there.
As I posted recently in response to another question, Stack does mention the update in Lifetime's edit of special 6.
So there are a few possibilities...
1. The segment/update was originally shown during special 5 on Lifetime but many years ago and was replaced in later showings (go figure).
2. The update was shown in Lifetime's special 6 many years ago but was edited out at some point (again, go figure).
3. The segment or update was shown during one of the 30 minute installments at 2am.
For what it's worth, I "first saw" the Strickland case in the fall of '04 when I got the UM specials on tape in a trade. Something about the story seemed familiar. I still don't know why.

I remember reading an article on Newsbank that ever so briefly touched on Carlos Alvares. The article was quite dated (from '93 or thereabouts) and indicated that he had been abducted while playing in his font yard. He was still missing, at least at that time. Strangely, the article did not mention the two men who were mentioned on UM as suspects in his disappearance.
John Simmons is dead. His body was discovered in the early nineties. He was shot in the head and his body disposed of in a park not too far from his home. It was mentioned that he was last seen talking to some men who were suspected drug dealers. Apparently he lived in a bad part of town and local drug dealers were known to try to recruit really young kids around his age to sell or lookout for cops. I posted some articles about it here.
robbieasbury 11-26-2008, 01:31 AM When was the Jerry Strickland Missy Mundy case repeated on NBC that included the Kurt McFall, Charles Scheel, and Michael Scott Martin cases? I believe sometime in the summer of 1988 that included the update.

I looked in the episode guide and it didn't have a repeat date for special 5. Not sure if that is accurate or not.

I recently saw the "RS Profiles 10 Missing Persons" segment for the first time. I couldn't remember the names of the two missing men, but when I saw they'd disappeared from Michigan I automatically thought of that case (I'd seen the Cold Case Files segment on it multiple times). Rather eerie.

I enjoy true crime books but I'm afraid to read this one. As far as more details if you click on the amazon link it gives several reviews with some details about the case. I noticed one person said this family that murdered them made the "Deliverance" family look like a step up. From what I can gleam there was torture involved with the men begging for their lives. They were ultimately chopped up and fed to the hogs and I believe it took 18 years to solve the crime. Such a gruesome story!!
Janel "Jaycee" Miller 01-10-2011, 06:25 PM I was VERY surprised to see the Kyra Cook (the teen that woke up with amnesia in a Washington state park) profiled on Lifetime today (no new developments, btw). And last week, Wanda Mays was profiled.
Though I thought I had seen just about every UM there is/was, every now and then an episode will air on this latest 2010-2011 run on Lifetime that I've never seen before (i.e. A SF vice cop murdered).
All that said, I hate all the post-production stuff (flashes across the screen, arrows showing us the murder weapon, etc.) I understand this makes it more CSI-ish, but as a L and O fan, I don't care for ir. And I miss the old music too.
cocytus 01-10-2011, 06:59 PM If I'm not mistaken, the reasons that so many segments are NOT shown on Lifetime is that there are issues w/ the broadcast rights or the case was solved shortly after airing.

That makes sense to a point. Other older posts on other topics have indicated that stories like Wanda Mays, Kyra Cook, Robert Weeks were pre-Stack and not shown the first time around on Lifetime (pre-Dennis Farina, pre-Spike network).
But now stories like Wanda Mays, Kyra Cook and Robert Weeks are being shown on Lifetime with the added enhancements from Spike. I guess (?????) its because before Spike, Dennis Farina, etc. got involved, Lifetime did not want to get involved in the broadcast rights, re-editing of showing the pre-Stack specials?
crystaldawn 02-24-2011, 10:45 PM I have a few more I wanted to put on here that to my knowledge never made it to Lifetime. Feel free to correct me if you remember seeing it on there.
I know these have mentioned in the past on another thread but thought I'd add them to this list. The 4 abducted children cases quickly profiled at the end of the original segment of Tara Calico. The names are Leticia Hernandez, Jessica Suzanne Gutierrez, David Michael Borer and Malakia Zali Logan. Leticia's body was found but no arrests have been made. Malakia's remains were found and someone was convicted of her murder and David and Jessica are still missing although Jessica is thought to have been murdered and there is a suspect in her case but apparently not enough evidence to charge him.
A few more FBI Alert's that I don't recall seeing on Lifetime.
Wardell David Ford (he was captured in 9/90)
Larry Porter Chism (from what I can tell he's still on the run)
William Slagle - This was a really bizarre story. He was the college debate coach that often argued with his star debater, Rex Copeland. Rex was found stabbed to death in his apartment and Slagle confessed to the murder and went on the run. Apparently Copeland was tired of debating and wanted to focus on his fraternity and law school and was going to quit the debate team which angered Slagle. He was captured after 6 months on the run. He was sentenced to life and was denied parole back in '07.

wiseguy182 03-26-2011, 08:09 AM I have another one that has narrated by FBI director Williams Sessions and had the following baddies: Bobbie Dennie wanted for rape and murder, Melvin Edward Mays a domestic terrorist and street gang leader, and Leslie Isben Rogge wanted for a series of bank robberies.
great news, Leslie Isben Rogge was captured on 5/18/96. it looks like prior to being recatpured, he had continued his bank robbing ways. Unforunately, it doesn't mention if Judy Wilson, his wife who was wanted for aiding and abetting, was also captured.

TheCars1986 03-26-2011, 10:14 AM What never made sense to me was Lifetime (back when they were still airing the Stack episodes) never aired segments like Glen Consagra or the 50 Naval Officer Mutiny, but now that Farina is the host they are shown on the show.
crystaldawn 03-26-2011, 10:31 AM After first seeing the Marlena Childress segment recently I can't imagine why it wasn't re-aired. I thought the sightings of her seemed credible which would mean she was still alive after she went missing. Lifetime reairing this segment over the years could have resulted in more sightings of her so I don't get it.

I agree. Why still show updated segments (that were updated when Stack was alive) on the Farina hosted episodes, instead of airing the segments that are still unsolved?

I believe he made this list before the Spike/Farina incarnations began airing.
This list is in reference to the episodes aired on Lifetime from 1992 until 2004ish. These episodes were, in most respects, similar to the versions aired on NBC with the exception of various edits (probably time related) and the inclusion of updates, as well the removal of certain stories for an unknown reason.
Strangely (or perhaps not), Spike, and now Lifetime, have shown many of these previously unseen stories.
UMFaninMD 05-02-2011, 08:47 PM I have never seen the L'enfant (Bashir "Gabby") case featured on Lifetime. Has it ever been aired?
As for the two Michigan hunters, their story was featured on A&E's Cold Case. It was a senseless act of violence and these two brothers that committed the crime had the whole town so scared nobody would talk for years because everyone was afraid they would be killed. Apparently, these two would murder you for looking at them weird.
DarkDante 05-02-2011, 09:35 PM I have never seen the L'enfant (Bashir "Gabby") case featured on Lifetime. Has it ever been aired?
That was the case of the Middle Eastern restaurateur who was being threatened by a terrorist group including a young child correct? He eventually checked himself into a mental institution? Yes it's been aired many times over on "Lifetime" during the Stack years. Not sure if a Farina version has ever been cobbled together.
For what it's worth I believe Bashir has been out of the institution for many years now and is still in the restaurant business.
UMFaninMD 05-02-2011, 10:11 PM Yes, that's the case. So it has aired on Lifetime. I wonder when it was shown because the first time I've ever seen it was on the site that can't be named.
TheCars1986 06-29-2016, 09:53 AM BUMP
Are we positive that the Ellender family murder was never shown on Lifetime? I am nearly positive that I've seen it 2-3 times when Lifetime used to air UM at noon and 1 on weekdays in 2003-2004. I'm fairly certain I saw Charles Horvath once during this time frame too. It was definitely NOT the Farina episodes, and this was well before UM started popping up on the forbidden site.

I'm pretty sure the original RFK segment was shown on Lifetime back in the pre-Farina days. I remember seeing it. Though, it seems like the segment about Scott Enyart and the missing photos started getting more and more airplay as time went on.
What I find ironic about the original RFK segment is that the main guy who was espousing the conspiracy theory, Dan Moldea, changed his tune in later years and actually wrote a book about how Sirhan acted alone, and the security guard some have accused of being the second shooter was completely innocent.

The segment never denied Sirhan firing off 8 shots, the dispute was whether or not the security guard may have accidentally fired the fatal shot. I didn't get the mystery about this. Sirhan still was the originator of the mayhem, and on the off chance that the guard did shoot Kennedy accidentally, it was because of the actions of Sirhan that it happened.

There was no accident about it. Having done some research on this subject outside UM, I can confirm that some people believe there was actually an organized conspiracy to assassinate Robert F. Kennedy, much as there are theories about his brother. Some have pointed to the security guard (I believe his name was Eugene Thane Cesar), or possibly someone else, as intentionally firing an additional shot into the back of Robert F. Kennedy's head due to the fact that the coroner stated the fatal shot was fired at point blank range and from behind, yet nearly all of the witnesses to the event suggested that Sirhan was several feet away and in front of Kennedy when he began shooting and was restrained. In other words, he never had an opportunity to get that close to inflict such a shot.
If I remember correctly, the guard acknowledged pulling his gun during the scuffle, yet denied firing it. On the other hand, there is a witness interviewed by a radio reporter in the aftermath of the assassination who reported that the guard did discharge his weapon, though the witness seemed to think he was returning fire at the shooter. The guard dropped off the face of the Earth after that. IIRC, Moldea located the guard years later where he was living in some third world country. He agreed to be interviewed and Moldea came away believing that he had nothing to do with Kennedy's assassination aside from being a bystander. As was stated on the UM segment, the LAPD was also unable to find a connection between the guard and Sirhan.

He agreed to be interviewed and Moldea came away believing that he had nothing to do with Kennedy's assassination aside from being a bystander. As was stated on the UM segment, the LAPD was also unable to find a connection between the guard and Sirhan.
Seems like this theory has fallen by the wayside in recent years. The new working theory is that Sirhan was "programmed" and brainwashed into killing Kennedy, and that a woman in the kitchen somehow gave him a code word that sent him into a programmed state with intent to kill.
This was one of those rare cases where they actually had the lead investigators on to refute some of the conspiracy claims. It seemed like a well balanced segment, IMO.

Yeah, variations of that theory have been in play for awhile. Some of the allegations are quite bizarre. For example, several witnesses reported seeing a woman in a blue and white polka dot dress and a young man running from the scene in a state of excitement and glee and the woman was repeatedly saying "we shot him!" At least one witness, Sandra Serrano (sp?) ran across this couple as they were leaving the hotel, and in a state of confusion Serrano asked "who did you shoot?" and the woman replied "we shot Senator Kennedy." Interestingly, Serrano told this story on live television to NBC news reporters about an hour after the shooting. Years ago, I obtained some of NBC's actual coverage from that night and Serrano's interview was there. She would later claim she was harassed by LAPD detectives who wanted her to change her narrative to say that the woman said "they shot him."
So, one theory is that Sirhan was "hypnoprogrammed" to assassinate RFK, but the conspirators didn't have full faith that it would work as planned, so the woman in the polka dot dress and young man were sent as Sirhan's handlers, but also to "finish the job" if he didn't. Another variation is that Sirhan was actually firing blanks as a distraction while the real killers shot RFK and escaped in the confusion.
There has also been some interest recently in an audio recording of the assassination. Interestingly, the recording was buried in the California State Archive for decades until a friend and old trading buddy of mine unearthed it in about 2004. Some experts have analyzed the tape and said there are as many as 13 shots and that the shots are spaced too closely to have been fired by a single gun. At least one expert has said that only 8 shots are on the tape and the extraneous sounds thought to be shots are echos or other noise.

Yeah, it was a pretty good segment. I thought it interesting that it was mostly clinical/ballistic in nature and didn't try to delve deeper into who might have been behind the conspiracy.
Another tidbit: after the UM segment on Scott Enyart aired, a couple friends who were with him that night came forward and said he never went into the kitchen pantry after RFK's speech, thus his story was a lie.

Really?
I thought there were pictures of him clearly standing on the table taking pictures while Kennedy was already shot and on the floor?

There's a picture of a young man on a table, which Scott claims is him. Other dispute this. If I recall correctly, UM showed pictures of the young man and Scott at age 15.

I believe I read somewhere that the guy was identified as a photographer from a magazine.

I'm not really surprised by this. The man on the table doesn't look like Scott did at that age and looked a lot older than 15, in my opinion. Would love to find a link confirming it, though.

It is mentioned here that during the civil suit over the LAPD's handling of the Enyart photos that Enyart actually backed down in his assertion that he was the man in the photo after seeing an enlarged version of it in court.

To be fair, the UM segment was produced before the trial. So, the idea that the guy on the table could have been Enyart was still in play.

Thank you for that link, it was a very interesting read.
Also interesting to read how his friends called in to report that he lied about going into the pantry. I want to watch the segment again now.
