It seems lately that it's just me and you here until the wee hours of the morning, lol. I'm on this nutty sleeping cycle, due to health issues. I just think it's a riot that it's me and you, almost every night.

Can I join?

Even if I could sleep, my cat is hogging the bed. He's laying in the middle of my bed and he's asleep. I believe he thinks it's his bed. I hate to move him. My bed is a twin size bed. Maybe he will wake up in a little bit and at least scoot over. hehe :cat: Last night I was able to lay in bed and watch over him.
You're in, Jenny! Your cat's hogging the bed. He sounds worse than my husband. Do you have a laptop going on there? You tell Chava that I said, that I said....give that sweetie a kiss from me. And Jenny, don't you know that it is his bed. Cats allow us to live with them.

I'm up pretty late, too, usually about 2-3 in the morning(sometimes 4), and I'll come on here when I come home late from one of my concerts.

It's funny because whenever I post on here and the time on my post reads like 2:27 AM, I'm a little embarrassed that people will notice and think "Geez, who posts in the middle of the night!!"

No, I don't have a laptop. In my room I have a computer and a desk which is close to my bed. My room is small. Guess where he is tonight? He's underneath my mother's bed. He's so silly. He doesn't usually hide under her bed. He is underneath the bed in the middle where you can't reach him. He's smart. He knows how to hide when he wants to be by himself.

Geez, all 3 of my cats are outside right now sitting either on the driveway or on one of the car hoods. That's one of the reasons I stay up so late. I let them stay outside for a while, then try to get them in before I go to bed.

This whole night owl thing started years ago. I used to work a normal scheduled job. I would have to be there at 8. I've never been a morning person, so when I got home from work, I was so tired that I would take a nap. So because of that nap, I was wide awake late at night. So I started watching late night TV - Jay, Conan...back then USA Network started showing Wings & Quantum Leap. Started watching them along with other shows on other channels. And it's been that way ever since.

Wow, I didn't know there were so many night owls here at SO! I'm a member of the club, too, as you can tell by the time I'm posting this. ;) I don't have to go into work till 12:30 most days, so I don't go to bed until 5 or 6am. (Usually around 5:30). Man, I thought I was the only weird person who went to bed at that hour!

Naps are brutal when trying to get on a sleep regime. I've been a nocturnal person for my entire life. As a kid, my two sisters woud be up early, watching cartoons. Meanwhile, my mother had to yell at me to get out of bed to eat breakfast and get ready for school. I never wanted to go to sleep at night. I was always afraid I was going to miss something, like now, lol.

Yup, tell me about it. I maintain a schedule like anybody else -- I just happen to have an out of the ordinary schedule. I still work 8 hours, and I still get ~6 to 7 hours of sleep. They're just at different times of the day.

The thing I love about it is, I don't have to deal with any customers and I can do my shopping when my shift is over, which is well before the store opens. :D

Fo' sho'. Biggest advantage of working at a big-box store that's not open 24 hours like Walmart, that's for sure. :D

I can also get clothes on clearance and get them for really cheap w/ my discount. I've been getting a lot of ~$30 tops that have been marked down to $5 - $10, and I can get them in my size before the rest of the customers get to it. Boo yeah!

Weary with toil, I haste me to my bed
The dear repose for limbs with travel tired.
But then begins a journey in my head
To work my mind, when body's work's expired.
For then my thoughts, from far where I abide,
Intend a zealous pilgrimage to thee,
And keep my drooping eyelids open wide,
Looking on darkness which the blind do see.
Save that my soul's imaginary sight
Presents thy shadow to my sightless view:
Which like a jewel hung in ghastly night,
Makes black night beauteous, and her old face new.
Lo, thus by day my limbs -- by night my mind --
For thee and for myself no quiet find.

Sleeplessness a Nightmare for Many

WASHINGTON (Feb. 29) - With late-night TV watching, Internet surfing and other distractions, Americans are getting less and less sleep, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said on Thursday.

And all this sleeplessness can be a nightmare for your mental and physical health, CDC experts cautioned, calling sleep loss an under-recognized public health problem.

Sleep experts say chronic sleep loss is associated with obesity, diabetes, high blood pressure, stroke, cardiovascular disease, depression, cigarette smoking and excessive drinking.

The CDC surveyed 19,589 adults in four states. Ten percent reported they did not get enough sleep or rest every single day of the prior month, and 38 percent said they did not get enough in seven or more days in the prior month.

The CDC survey was conducted in New York, Hawaii, Delaware and Rhode Island, asking people how many days in the prior month they got insufficient rest or sleep, without asking specifically how many hours they slept.

But the CDC released nationwide data collected separately showing that across all age groups, the percentage of adults reporting sleeping six hours or fewer a night increased from 1985 to 2006.

The National Sleep Foundation recommends adults get seven to nine hours of sleep a night. Children ages 5 to 12 should get nine to 11 hours and those 11 to 17 need 8-1/2 to 9-1/2 hours.

Sleep Is Vital

"At night, we're doing everything except for sleeping -- we're on the Internet, we may be watching TV. With these new lifestyles we have kind of taken sleep for granted as something that we can do when we have time or we can catch up on it on the weekends," CDC behavioral scientist Lela McKnight-Eily, who led the study, said in a telephone interview.

"We don't realize that sleep is a vital part of overall health and that chronic sleep loss is related to both physical and mental health issues," she added. "It's getting worse."

Darrel Drobnich, National Sleep Foundation chief executive officer, added that several thousand people die on U.S. roads yearly in accidents involving drowsy drivers.

"Americans are definitely sleep deprived. They don't get the amount that even they say that they want," Drobnich said.

The CDC said 50 to 70 million Americans suffer from chronic sleep loss and sleep disorders in a country of 300 million.

The CDC four-state survey found that younger adults are more likely than older adults to report getting too little sleep. It also found overall that 30 percent of respondents said they got enough sleep every day of the past month, and 33 percent got too little on one to six days in the prior month.

Lela McKnight-Eily urged people who often get too little sleep to see a doctor to see whether lifestyle issues are to blame or whether they might have a sleeping disorder. People can also try to establish a regular sleep schedule and avoid caffeine or other stimulants before bedtime, she added.
