I may not understand what the text says. Can anybody help me on this one?

This was not from a specific episode. This is just a newspaper article. It may have been around 1972 or 1973. The makeover covered four areas: Skin, Eyes, Lips, and Hair. Due to the newspaper being at least 3.5 decades old, you'll have to save the image and use the Windows Picture and Fax viewer to see the text. I may go ahead and use MS Paint to make the text look better.

As time went on, Jean Stapleton became a real handful to work with. All of the show's stars were on big ego trips but she appears to have been the most difficult to deal with. Really, by the time the show was in it's final seasons the character of Edith had to be completely redrawn creating a real continuity gap. She wouldn't do a final episode and didn't even attend the funeral of Carroll O'Connor (all other cast members were there).

That's a shame to hear. :( I always pictured Jean like Edith: a sweet, motherly type. That's how good she is/was as an actress and how perfect the role was for her.

Wow! I never knew Jean Stapleton was such a diva! Well, I agree that shows what a good actress she was. The same can be said for Carroll O'Connor, he was NOTHING like Archie.

Jean's last public appearance with Carroll was on the Donny and Marie talk show. She came to town and watched the final film of Carroll's career Return To Me and mentioned that she hurried into the theater past the many trying to interview him. I seem to recall the reason that Jean didn't come to Carroll's funeral was that she was appearing in a show and under a contractual agreement that wouldn't let her attend the service. If Jean is a diva I'm surprised that its not been widely publicized by others since those AITF days. Maybe it has been and I haven't seen the articles but no matter what the publicity Jean is a wonderfully talented actress and no one could have filled the role of Edith Bunker the way Jean did.

I have never heard of anything like this before. IMO Edith's character grew after Jean found her "voice" in the first season. Then she remained consistent. "Redrawn?" "Continuity gap??" I don't even know what that means. No offense but I think you're talking out your hat with that post. If you can support it with a book or something fine. I have the People Magazine article when the show wrapped up and there wasn't a dry eye in the house. Those tears were real.
