View Full Version : The better Family show of the 1990's, Step by Step or Home Improvement and why??
TVFactFan 02-14-2008, 04:36 PM Step by Step all the way because the show was centered on the family as a whole and was always fun to watch. It was just geared toward the father while he was at work while the family took a backseat. I enjoyed SBS more because it was similar to family matters when it came to small children, they didn't have large roles and it focused a lot on the teens and BOTH parents not just one.
SBS would be so attractive on N@N
JulieSomoski 02-14-2008, 04:54 PM Sorry, Solomon, I'd have to go with Home Improvement. Everything about it was better - the acting, the writing, the storylines, the ratings-LOL. Sure, it was centered around the father, but it was a down to earth family show.
On Step by Step, the episodes would get boring a lot of the time, and it seemed to get old real fast. They kept adding new characters, and you could hardly keep up with some of the things that were going on.
Lorimar Television 02-14-2008, 07:21 PM No, I disagree! SBS wasn't hard to follow, and they had good storylines! But, I really can't choose, they're both great!

SBS's storylines were old and boring after season 3. Once the baby came, it seemed like they were copying stories from every other show that had a baby come. The show was pretty much a hyped-up version of The Brady Bunch (without Alice-LOL).
But, Step by Step was a really good show in its first few seasons. And, I definitely liked Suzanne a lot more here than in Three's Company. I just liked Home Improvement better.

OK, I respect your opinion, I was just saying I don't feel that way. Sorry for the confusion! :)
TVFactFan 02-15-2008, 08:41 PM The Home Improvement House was just so BLAH compared to the Step By Step House-lol
Big C 02-15-2008, 09:33 PM The SBS kids (especially J.T. and Karen) were better than the Home Improvement Kids, IMO.

Nothing against you - I guess we just have different opinions on this topic!

I agree - Home Improvement all the way. I used to be a huge SBS fan, and I still watch it every now and again, but to me, it doesn't even compare. Pretty much everything about Home Improvement was way more realistic and relatable. To me, SBS is complete fluff compared to Home Improvement. Not that fluff is always a bad thing!

You're right - I used to watch Step by Step all the time. But now, I'll catch it once in awhile, probably now more that it'll be on at 2pm. But, I'd much rather own the DVD's of Home Improvement than Step by Step. Overall, HI has a lot more rewatchability.

I think that was a large part of it for me

I personally found the Home Improvement kids to be way more realistic. Many times I found the SBS kids (no offense, but especially Karen) to be WAY over the top. Though, I still think it's fun to watch once in a while.

JT on SBS and Dana was very realistic to me. Now Cody and Karen was something Different-lol

Dana and JT got on my nerves a lot - I know Dana was supposed to be smart but did she always have to be stuck-up like she was? JT wasn't bad - I actually found him really funny.
The Home Improvement kids were really likeable, though. I just found them funnier than the kids on SBS.

Yeah, nothing against you either! :)
