I don't know if this is the appropriate place to mention this, but here goes. A chain of restaurant/bars in Canada, "Kelsey's," has recently begun ariring commercials using "Where Everybody Knows Your Name," the original as sung and recorded by Gary Portnoy. Their slogan is "Cheers to Good Food." Shame on you, Gary Portnoy and Judy Hart Angelo, or whomever else is responsible. I call for an immediate boycott of Kelsey's, until they cease using the song. It is ruining my warm fuzzies of the show.

You might as well boycott Cherry Chocolate Diet Dr. Pepper, too. The commercial uses the Cheers' theme song, too.

I wasn't aware of Cherry Chocolate Diet Dr. Pepper and I have never tried it, but it goes on the boycott list!

its called "selling out" Chips....it's no big deal, even the Beatles music is being used this way ...Although, i have to say, it always seems weird when I hear the Cheers theme being used for a bar chain named "Kelsey's" ...which is a name i always associate with the bar from All in the Family! (Now, if the bar chain were called Cheers............)

I love the song. However I hear it, wherever I hear it, suits me fine. It's not like it's played on the radio. I love hearing popular songs used in advertising.

Whoever owns the song has every right to use it however he or she sees fit.

It doesn't bother me that the Cheers theme song is used in adversting.

Absolutely right - I have every right to boycott whomever it is sold to.

The problem I have when I hear the commercials for chocolate cherry diet Dr Pepper is that I think Cheers is on.

There were/are bars in Canada called "Cheers", not affiliated as far as I know with the TV show and they don't use the theme. (At one time, the show creators also licensed lounges and bars at hotels and restaurants around the US.)

Oh, ... and it is a big deal to me.

They didn't sell the song, they ALLOWED its use. And you have every right to complain or show your disgust as you see fit. Good luck.

I seriously doubt that Kelsey's or Cadbury Schweppes (Makers of Dr. Pepper) will go in the red because of your boycotts.

You know, if the publishers of the song, as well as the owners of the recording (presumably Paramount) think it's okay to use it in a commercial, I would hardly consider it a "misuse."

In fact, who's to say hearing the song in a Dr. Pepper commercial hasn't rekindled someone's interest in the show? Maybe Dr. Pepper and Kelsey's has sold a few Cheers DVD sets. Perhaps that caused a resurgence in DVD sales, which caused Paramount to finally release season 9.

But if you want to boycott Dr. Pepper and Kelsey's, more power to you. I hear that Mr. Pibb, along with Red Vines, is "crazy delicious."

I thought this might've been in reference to some Super Bowl ad where the Cheers theme was used. (maybe it's the Dr. Pepper one??) All I recall is a darkened store and down the aisle food items or something are marching to the Cheers theme. I personally love hearing it, keeps it in the mainstream conciousness :).

No, he was originally refering to a TV ad for an All-Canadian bar chain called "Kelseys" which uses the Cheers theme for a jingle

AHA! My boycott must be working - Kelsey's is shutting down its operations in the province of Quebec. The power of righteous outrage!

Yeah, they shut down because of your boycott... That is real funny...I think. "Focusing on other markets" doesn't sound like, "We are closing because one person boycotted a product." This company has other outlets, so I don't think this is hurting them one bit.

Here is the real story:

About 400 lose jobs; Pub-style restaurant chain to focus on other markets
LYNN MOORE, The Gazette
Published: Thursday, March 13

About 400 people will be looking for work as of Saturday when the 12 Quebec outlets of Kelsey's Neighbourhood Bar & Grill close their doors.

Kelsey's - a pub-style restaurant rooted in the suburbs and owned by privately held food-services giant Cara Operations Ltd. - is pulling out of Quebec to focus on its other Canadian markets where the brand has better traction, the company said.

''The competition is different in Quebec,'' Dave Minnett, president of Kelsey's, said in a recent statement. ''The decision that we (took) will allow us to concentrate on the regions where our activity is more solid. We will continue to grow Kelsey's in the other Canadian markets where the brand is prospering.''

Kelsey's employees learned of the corporate decision last month. And some were offered, or sought, employment in such sister operations as Swiss Chalet or Harvey's, an employee said yesterday.

''Of course, we are sad, but there is nothing we can do about it,'' she said.

About 414 people were employed by Kelsey's operations in Quebec, the company said. Montreal-area outlets included those in Kirkland, Longueuil, St. Laurent and St. Bruno.

Founded in 1978 in the Toronto suburb of Oakville, Kelsey's has outlets in Ontario, Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta and British Columbia.

Cara, which owns or operates about five branded restaurants in Canada, is also a key food provider for Canadian airlines.

Of course, that is the official story put out by the company - they wouldn't want it known that a single, determined individual can take down The Man!! Imagine how sacred the other capitalists would become if the truth ever got out!
