Back in the mid-1980's, there were a pair of TV stations in New Jersey and Long Island that had a free alternative to MTV, and didn't require cable television. Actually, there was one before this based in Plainview, Long Island, New York, but the one I'm thinking of had more of an impact. It was U-68, and it had videos most people might not have been familiar with. I remember videos to songs from more than 20 years ago, I'm still trying to find.

Sadly, both stations were bought out by the Home Shopping Network in the Summer of 1986.

Anybody else in other parts of the country have similar music channels that attempted to compete with MTV?
