Like Mother, Like Daughter
Starring Christina Applegate as Claudia Madsen, a Philadelphia divorcee-turned-longtime single mom of a teenage daughter. Claudia's life hasn't been the most stressfree type of life. When Claudia was 14, her father committed suicide right in front of herself, her then 10-year-old brother Kevin, and her mother Marlene (Candice Bergen). When Claudia turned 18 and graduated from high school, she had ran off with her former high school teacher, Roger Madsen (Mark Moses) to marry him (despite her mother's disapproval and her own better judgment). Roger had gotten his young bride, Claudia pregnant not too long after their marriage become official. When their daughter, Ally turned 3 years old and their marriage was approaching the 4-year mark, Roger announces he wants a divorce and wanting to go back to former lifestyle back in Philadelphia. After divorcing Roger, Claudia gets primary custody of Ally, and the two move back in with Claudia's mother, Marlene and brother, Kevin (Sean Maguire). Fourteen years later, a 36-year-old Claudia becomes stunned and almost speechless when her now-17-year-old Ally (Jamie Lynn Spears) has just confessed to her about being two months pregnant with her 19-year-old boyfriend, Dylan (Drake Bell)'s baby. Claudia becomes supportive and has a sit-down talk with Ally, Dylan, Dylan's parents, and Ally's now-45-year-old father, Roger to discuss Ally's pregnancy. Ally and Dylan have decided that they will be raising their baby together, causing Dylan's parents to flip out and kick their son out of their house. A newly-homeless Dylan becomes welcome to stay with Ally and Claudia, until after the baby is born and the couple is able to make it on their own. Roger has walked back into Ally and Claudia's lives once again, mostly because of his new grandchild coming into the world and wanting to be there for Ally while trying to make it up to a reluctantly civil Claudia-who still holds a nasty grudge against her ex-husband for leaving her back in the day. Claudia gets her support from her friends, Lauren (Elisa Donovan) and Angelo (Ricardo Chavira). Lauren has been Claudia's best friend since high school, and Angelo is Lauren's hunky Mexican boyfriend of 2 years, who enjoys hanging out with Lauren and Claudia moreso than his loser buddies. Speaking of best friends, Ally is often with her longtime best friend, Anna Hennessy (Emma Roberts) who comes from a wealthy parents who are often absent in Anna's life, so Claudia steps in and plays "surrogate mom" to Anna as well as her own daughter and now her live-in boyfriend-turned baby's daddy. Also, Claudia's younger brother, Kevin is often around for support and just to hangout with. Kevin is no-longer closeted gay who came out of the closet five years ago, and is often mistaken for being a heterosexual man due to his personality traits. Claudia's love life has not been the same since her and Roger's divorce, but recently Claudia does her eye on a certain someone who just moved in across the hall from her (and Ally and Dylan). The one problem is that Claudia's newfound crush, Paul (Dan Cortese) happens to be a gay man living with his also-hunky boyfriend, Bobby (Bobby Cannavale). Paul and Bobby have been together for little over a year and truly happy. Even though, Claudia knows Paul is happily taken and not to mention, is gay, she has it in her mind that "there's always a chance". Watch how Claudia and Ally handle life's trials and tribulations, along with their friends and family, as well as handle Ally's pregnancy and Ally and Dylan's unborn baby on the way.
