Janet Jackson had to switch seats when she first saw Prince live - because she couldn't bear to watch the sexy star perform while sitting next to her God-fearing mother.

The "Nasty" singer was just a teenager when she begged her mother Katherine - a devout Jehovah's Witness, for tickets to see her hero.

Mom agreed her daughter could go to the show, but insisted on chaperoning her.

Jackson tells Parade.com, "Being a Jehovah's Witness, you grow up in a very religious world. But, as a kid, I loved Prince and The Time - one of my favourite groups. I would listen to them all the time, even though you're not supposed to do that. When I was 16, I was promoting my first album and I went with Mother to see The Time's concert with Prince. I did not want to sit next to Mother because I knew they were dirty. I was trying to be cool and calm, but oh my God, I was sweating bullets: 'She's going to think, Good Lord, what is my baby into? She really needs more of God in her life! Where did I go wrong?' I could just hear Mother blaming herself for everything! Luckily, I got someone else to swap seats with me so I was able to enjoy the show."

Ironically, Prince was the leading chart rival of Janet's brother Michael throughout the 1980s and 1990s.

I always wondered how Janet (and the rest of the family members) could perform such songs, dress in certain attire and NOT have their religious beliefs play a part in that.

Janet has paraded herself to the world similar to Prince. Is she not worried abt her God-fearing mother then? Or did that "fear" go away once she hit adulthood? Seriously, I want to know.

Funny, because Prince is now allegedly a Jehovah's Witness.

I think it's funny since today Prince is a devout Jehovah's Witness, while Michael and Janet have excommunicated themselves from the religion

The Jacksons have no religion. What religion? Only religion they have is weirdness and pathetic behavior.

Because Joe Jackson screwed that family up. Now, Janet's a Britney wannabe and Michael's a hideous monster with too many surgeries to boot.

Because Joe Jackson screwed that family up. Now, Janet's a Britney wannabe and Michael's a hideous monster with too many surgeries to boot.I gotcha. Whatever religious involvement they've had over the years, it's been eclipsed by the zany goings-on that have made the news. I wouldn't say that religion WASN'T a part of their lives, but when you have a sort of oddball Addams Family of the entertainment world like that,
where their personal lives have been so messed up by fame, religion no longer seems to be such a stabilizing factor. I remember hearing one of the Jacksons insist that Michael embrace Islam. ohno:

I think that was Jermaine who said that. Jermaine is a pathetic oddball who is married so many times to different women and cheated on them. He is the spitting image of his dad now. He is twice as bad as his own dad was back in the day. If he is going to use that religion as a excuse, find a better excuse than that, Jermaine. I bet fame cross their heads with Joe leering at them like a devil
