HBO Dumps "Inside the NFL"
Here is today's announcement:

For the past 31 years, HBO Sports has aired INSIDE THE NFL, establishing it as one of the premier football studio programs on television.

HBO Sports President Ross Greenburg, who joined the network’s sports division one year after the debut of INFL, announced today that the season finale of INSIDE THE NFL, which is set for Wednesday, Feb. 6, 2008 and will recap the New York Giants Super Bowl victory, will mark the final edition of the program on HBO.

“Inside the NFL has been a hallmark program for three decades on HBO,” said Greenburg. “It has been a terrific franchise. But the television landscape has changed quite a bit over the last 30 years and we have to recognize the realities of the business. I’m not sure we had more than one competitor when the show launched in 1977.

“We wish NFL FILMS, our partner for the past 31 years, all the best with continuing the great tradition of INSIDE THE NFL.”

INSIDE THE NFL airs tonight at 10:00 p.m. ET/PT & 9:00 p.m. CT on HBO.

I used to be a faithful viewer of the program but have drifted away over the years. Part of that stems from my watching less TV than I used to, part from the plethora of other NFL programming out there, from broadcast to cable to radio sports-talk. It hasn't felt as if I had to see "Inside the NFL" to complete my requirement for coverage.

I am sorry to see the show leave HBO after 31 year's.

With the advent of 24 hour sports networks and sports talk radio, it made little sense for HBO to continue having a program on once a week devoted to the goings on in the NFL.

I'm surprised it wasn't cancelled years ago.

I agree, it was a good show, but with ESPN and the NFL network, the show lost its importance.

I'm more shocked that it has been on for 31 years! Who had cable and HBO back in 1977?!?

I just read this in the update.

The NFL said Wednesday that it will continue with "Inside the NFL" on another network. There have been discussions with three or four other unnamed outlets, though no deal has been made. The show will kick off again in the fall, regardless.

HBO was on my cable by 1978.

We had it starting either the end of 1977 or beginning of 1978.

I always watched Inside the NFL.

Now I have no reason to have HBO anymore.
