View Full Version : Double Dipping? 'Seinfeld' Was Right
Janice 02-01-2008, 08:08 PM Double Dipping? 'Seinfeld' Was Right
COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - Keep an eye on the salsa this Super Bowl Sunday: A researcher inspired by a famous "Seinfeld" episode has concluded that double dipping is just plain gross.
"That's like putting your whole mouth right in the dip!" George Costanza was admonished on the show after he dipped a chip twice at a wake. That's not too far off, said Clemson University professor Paul L. Dawson.
Last year the food microbiologist's undergraduate students examined the effects of double dipping using volunteers, wheat crackers and several sample dips. They found that three to six double dips transferred about 10,000 bacteria from an eater's mouth to the remaining dip sample.
"I was very surprised by the results," Dawson said in a telephone interview Thursday. "I thought there would be very minimal transfer. I didn't think we would be able to detect it."
The professor said the students' research didn't get into the risk behind such a bacteria transfer, but they got the idea.
"I like to say it's like kissing everybody at the party - if you're double dipping, you're putting some of your bacteria in that dip," Dawson said.
The results of the research are scheduled to be published in the journal Food Safety within the next six months, he said.
tanquant 02-01-2008, 08:20 PM I never even thought about double dipping until that Seinfeld episode. It really makes sense. I'm guilty also of doing it.
Ireneparalegal 02-01-2008, 08:22 PM I have caught myself right before I actually do it. The thought of transferring germs to a dip that others are using is gross. :puke:
That is why you get the little paper plates and serve yourself the chips and dip. ;)
Cactus Jack 02-01-2008, 08:40 PM Whats the name of that episode again, I feel like watching it now LOL
friendsfan77 02-02-2008, 03:20 AM This is why if I were throwing a party or something I would just get little plastic cups and put little individual servings of dip in them.

YOU DOUBLE DIPPED THE CHIP!
 ;)
Wasnt that the same episode Megan Mullaly was in?
PZelda 02-02-2008, 04:44 AM That is why restaurants serve dip in small, individual bowls.
OH Nuts! 02-02-2008, 10:55 AM I am such a salt and munchies addict I eat the whole chip after I dip.
dakert 02-02-2008, 12:37 PM This reminds me of the Gilligan's Island episode where the Professor is telling Ginger about all the germs that comes from kissing
I dont eat dip so I am good to go

I recall this being the same episode Teri Hatcher was in. Forgot what it was called, but looking it up it's called "The Implant" from season 4.

Yeah, thats right, awesome episode, Teri Hatcher was great in it too.
You know Megan Mullaly also tried out for Elaine?
Janice 02-02-2008, 01:33 PM If you buy the right kind of chip, nobody would be tempted to double dip. A sturdy chip that's not too big, with a shape made for scooping. I think it's Lays that puts out a good dipping chip.
Cactus Jack 02-02-2008, 02:03 PM Or tortilla chips
junecleaver 02-02-2008, 02:03 PM  That is super gross. I didn't know it was that bad, but i still dont like when people do it. I think i will introduce the cups idea to my parties and stuff.
There are a lot of kids in my family, everytime we get together on birthdays, holidays, etc.. we always have dips. For the most part, most of the adults know not to double dip (well, mainly the women..lol) The hardest thing is getting all the kids to learn that double dipping is NOT ok. We tell them but they still continue to do it, and i guess it doesn't help when they see some of my uncles do it. So, at the beginning of every party, i try to get a hold of the dip and put some in a bowl for me that way i dont get slobber in mine.

Yeah, tostitos makes the "scoops". They are tortilla chips shaped like little bowls and you dip. I think they need to make them smaller though so people can easily pop them in their mouth. Well, this is a good topic since the superbowl is tomorrow. I guess we'll all be investing in cups and bowls and safety measures for the dip we'll be making tomorrow

That's exactly what I do - bought up a bunch at a dollar store and I put them around the chips (or whatever - veggies, etc.) they just grab a little dish to put on their plate with them. Everyone thinks it's a great idea.

Fritos has these just for dipping ..."SCOOPS"...They are so gooooood:
LuLu Rogers 02-03-2008, 07:01 PM I have to admit, I have been guilty of this before. My best friend and I even eat off of each others plates at restaurants, we each get something different so we can share. Maybe we're weird, but it's never bothered me before
Ireneparalegal 02-03-2008, 07:20 PM When it comes to me and my boyfriend, we share food without any problems. Of course, if one of us is sick, then it is a "no no".
Dean Winchester 02-03-2008, 07:37 PM remind me never to eat dip again that I know I'm not the first to eat

Dean Winchester 02-03-2008, 07:41 PM ^ true, nothing says romance more than a couple bedridden with the flu at the same time

Dean Winchester 02-03-2008, 07:56 PM Jewel says it all with "Cold Song"
It's getting cold and I'm starting to sneeze,
I wipe my nose on my sleeve.
I've got the sniffles
I'd better drink my tea.
Oh do you do you wanna wanna catch a cold with me?
I'd catch a cold with you anytime,
I ain't just feverish, I ain't just lyin'
'Cause when your nose is running it's a perfect time for kissing
and hugging.
Oh do you do you wanna wanna catch a cold with me?
We'll stay inside where it's nice and warm
Tell our bosses, we're caught in a sneezing storm.
We'll sniffle and snuggle and watch some more tv.
Do you do you wanna wanna wanna wanna do you do you wanna
do me yes indeed,
Oh do you do you wanna wanna catch/have a cold with me?

I get enough of his germs. ;)
junecleaver 02-03-2008, 10:33 PM This reminds me of buffets too. I hate buffets....touching the serving spoons after everyone else leaves a grimy feeling on my hands lol. I would bring a napkin but the few times i tried to i almost got the napkin stuck in the food. I try to keep hand sanitizer on hand though.

I'm with ya babe. After I saw a kid pick up a cookie, sneeze on it and put it back, it was done. No thanks! puke:

I keep a small sanitizer bottle in my purse, in my car and a few in the house. There is one right here at the computer. I keep hearing it in my head though we shouldn't use it simply because our bodies will never develop anti-bodies for the germs we never get. However, I don't want to catch the flu from someone (from public places as you stated) and I most certainly don't want my family members to pass their illness around, should they become sick.
Just the other day at the grocery store, the cashier was coughing and using her hand. :puke: She then picked up a napkin and used it to cough in. TOO LATE. Here she was touching all my items and I was just staring at it. When my daughter and I packed it into the SUV, we immediately used the sanitizer and when we got home, we wiped down some of the items I had purchased. We then washed our hands and used the sanitizer again.
When I pick up my son from school, I use wipies on his hands. When we get home, he washes his hands.
KayCee 02-04-2008, 02:25 AM Whats the name of that episode again, I feel like watching it now LOL
 i just saw it like 3 days ago.
but yea i never do that. the only time i do is if i have my own personal bowl or something. but never if its something other ppl eat out of too.
KayCee 02-04-2008, 02:27 AM When it comes to me and my boyfriend, we share food without any problems. Of course, if one of us is sick, then it is a "no no".
lol me and my bf do the same thing, sick or not
Number 9 Dream 02-05-2008, 12:48 AM My friends and I do the same thing  Especially during half-price appetizers at Applebees! :)
I have to admit, I have been guilty of this before. My best friend and I even eat off of each others plates at restaurants, we each get something different so we can share. Maybe we're weird, but it's never bothered me before
Dean Winchester 02-05-2008, 01:37 AM I don't see anything wrong with sharing food as long as you're not taking bites of the food and putting it back on the plate and then the next person takes a bite. I think it's pretty natural to share like that at a restaurant.
junecleaver 02-05-2008, 01:47 AM One time at school, i had stopped at the soda machine to get a Mountain Dew. After that, i went to class, and sat near my friends, opened up my soda and took a sip, closed it back up. There was a new girl sitting with my friends who had obviously been a friend of my friends, and as i was talking, she took my mountain dew and took a sip without my permission. Being the soft person i am, instead of yelling at her, I was like uhhh you can have it now. i was pissed though my dollar was wasted
Then, another time after that, i figured out the best way to retaliate and teach that girl a lesson. After she took yet another swig of my soda, i proceeded to tell my friends that i performed a certain deed on my boyfriend that morning before school, if you get what i mean..... She never touched another one of my soda's again after that....LOL. Of course i was lying though ;)
