View Full Version : Bad trader or is it me?
pielpr 02-01-2008, 06:43 PM I need the opinion of all of you in this situation: I asked a guy to set up a trade for The Munsters Today. The guy asked me 13 discs, so I thought the whole series was 13 discs. Then, I received a list from another trader who had 70 episodes of the series in 15 discs. I asked the guy of the trade how many episodes he had and he said "44-50 episodes in 9 or 10 discs", even though I had checked his website and says he has 12 episodes. I had all the discs burned so I had to keep up with our trade. Once the guy recieved the discs said I had made a mistake with 2 discs and a 3rd one was defective. I asked the guy what was my mistake, but didn't receive any reply in almost 2 weeks. Now he says he's going to send back my discs. Obviously, he had the time to make copies for him. IS HE A BAD TRADER AND i SHOULD POST HIS INFORMATION OR IS IT ME?
robyrob 02-01-2008, 08:14 PM this sort of topic should really be posted on the Trading post board.
...and I'm sorry, but I am a little confused by the details you have provided - what was the original agreement to the trade?
how many times have you contacted this individual, and what happened in those conversations exactly?
if this is a trader on this site, could you PM me this person's contact info so i can get their side of the story?

Have you received your end of the trade yet?
I agree with robyrob, it's tough to make heads or tails of this situation right now. Any more info you can give us?
But if he said upfront a few discs were defective, didn't communicate with you for 2 weeks, then sent the discs back, yeah, that is a little fishy.
Personally, I pay attention to what the running time is, as opposed to number of discs. Theoretically, a person could put a half hour show on a disc, and try to trade it for a disc with 3 hours worth of stuff on it.
pielpr 02-02-2008, 11:09 AM I haven't received anything yet and if I ever receive anything back, it will be my own discs. Yes, the guy is a trader on this site. Personally, I'd never ask anyone for a non 1-1 trade. When he asked for 13 discs my thought was we were trading 13 discs, but when I saw the other trader's list I emailed the guy and let him know that if he hadn't started burning my discs I would like to change my requests. He said he had 1/2 of them ready, so I had to keep our trade as it was originally agreed. Once he received his discs and let me know of the mistake and the defective disc, I emailed the guy several times with no response on his part. It wasn't until I told him that "I don't like to beg for a couple of DVDRs, but I don't like either when I write to somebody and I receive no response" that he replied saying he had emailed me the day before. I didn't receive anything and all of a sudden he replies to all my messages, but his position is to send back my own discs. I told him it wasn't fair because he had the chance to copy my discs and I will receive nothing. His last message says "why would I want to copy disks I can rent for free from my Libary?" I think it's a good question since it was him who chose them in the beginning.

hmmm. he should give you a chance to replace the supposed defecitive discs. Defective discs are not necessarily the fault of the sender. Sometimes discs play fine on some dvd players, but not others. Also, UPS and USPS are notorious for being careless with package handling, so it may have gotten damaged during shipping. My personal opinion is that he should give you a chance to replace the defective discs, and still be obligated to send you your discs. If he balks at that proposal, I would suggest taking the matter to the forum moderator. Perhaps others that have dealt with him have had similiar situations.
savageamusement 02-03-2008, 04:10 PM Can I ask a time frame on this- just curious- the post started a couple days ago-
when did the trade occur, because I was wondering if the lapse was holiday related perhaps-
As far as 2 things you asked, under normal circumstances, if there is something wrong, most traders, are expected to say something write away, and give the option of replacing, or repairing (like if the quality is bad, or cheap discs, or even wrong show)
it happens-
Since you already did the work-
paid for shipping, no I don't think getting your discs just sent back to you is fair- without anything in return.
If the person is that unhappy with the set they don't want it- I could see possibly reducing what they send you-
or asking for replaced discs-
but its rare to me to see someone So unhappy they send the entire lot back, and say they are sending nothing.
I had a trade go awry last year, the person mailed me 16 discs of (according to their list) 9+ quality of fantasy island- what I got was...oh maybe a 5.5
I told them it was far too vast a diffrence, and tried to talk to them about quality opinions-
I didn't feel it was worth a trade, but for their time/energy and postage, I did mail them part of what they wanted from me- and blanks back. Because they did do what I asked originally- the effort was there, and their time/postage by the fact I saw them.
That should count for something.
robyrob 02-03-2008, 09:41 PM I have talked to the other member involved, and it looks like this is a case of miscommunication, which should be able to be resolved as long as both parties follow through.
pielpr 02-04-2008, 09:47 AM Miscommunication? I didn't choose for the guy. He made his own selections. He asked 13 discs vs 9-10 (he wasn't even sure how many he had). When he received the discs he said he had 1/2 of mine ready, then said he had 0. He says I was asking for homemade stuff that takes time, but it's retail available material (Bewitched, Gilligan's Island, Get Smart) and I had to choose it when he said he was going to send back the discs. It wasn't until now that he told me the real reason in another message he sent me after reading my post:
I see that you are posting about this little mix up. I recently got more episodes of the Munsters Today and did not post them on my list yet. I had 12 from a previous trade. I did send you about 4 -5 emails in those 2 weeks you did not recieve. Try to check your Spam or blocked folder. They might be there. If you want, I can show you a screen cap from my outbox folder. I dont see why I would want to make copies of DVDs I can get for free to rent when you want home made stuff that takes time. We agreed to trade for Munsters not the other stuff you are asking for.

I've been a member since January 7, 2008. Holidays had already passed. I told the guy twice to let me know what my mistake was and what the defective disc was (just one defective disc and 2 mistaken). He never replied to these messages. All the discs sent are retail copies, so the quality was the highest possible.

he also said that you said you found the Munsters Today from someone else and so you wanted to change your picks when he had some of your disks made already.
- the bottom line is that after talking to both of you it seems obvious that there HAS been a misunderstanding here, and since he has agreed to send you the other disks that you wanted, as long as you send the one replacement disk this matter should be easily resolved.
any copied disk can be defective, it doesn't matter what the source is, what equipment you use or anything else - sometimes it just happens.
as for missing/unreceived emails, sometimes that happens too, and it looks to be a big part of the problem here, so if you want to communicate with this trader, you may want to do so THROUGH me, so I can verify all communications.
this other individual has been a member of these boards for a long time with nothing but good feedback, and he would have nothing to gain by ripping someone off over such a small trade, he has agreed to send your other picks to resolve this matter
Atlas 02-04-2008, 12:28 PM When you get the disk see if what he said was true. If you messed them up a little just bite the bullet.
