Rob and Laura Petrie (Dick Van Dyke and Mary Tyler Moore of the Dick Van Dyke Show) - BTW I got a copy of their classic 1969 special Dick Van Dyke and the Other Woman. Very good special and they looked so natural together. They are the Fred Aistaire and Ginger Rogers of sitcoms since they both sing and dance as well as act.

Steven and Elyse Keaton (Michael Gross and Meredith Baxter Birney of Family Ties) - In an interview Meredith stated that she don't know no other actor who could she can opposite with other than her real life husband, David Birney at the time. Their love scenes looked natural and not forced. They definitely had that chemistry going.

Henry and Muriel Rush (Ted Knight and Nancy Dussault of Too Close for Comfort) - Their chemistry was there even though from rumors that Ted Knight and Nancy Dussault at times did not get along. I liked them as a couple. You can tell there was a considerable age difference between them.

Tom and Sandra Sue "Abby" Bradford (Dick Van Patten and Betty Buckley of Eight is Enough) - This is another one of those older man marrying a much younger woman scenerio. It was well done and you can look at them and tell they belonged together.

Bob and Emily Hartley (Bob Newhart and Suzanne Pleshette of the The Bob Newhart Show) - Best TV married couple of the 70s and the best out of the three TV wives that Bob Newhart had. They played off each other very well.

Van and Cheyenne Montgomery (Steve Howley and Joanna Garcia of Reba) - They were two typical high school sweethearts who fell in love and got married due to a teenage pregnancy. They were fun to watch and a scream. You had a dumb dim-witted immature jock and a self-absorb airhead. They're both trying to make their way in life but as the series progressed they did mature and grew into being responsible.

Philip and Vivian Banks (James Avery and Janet Hubert-Whitten of Fresh Prince of Bel-Air) - They were more sexy and romantic as a couple compared to when Daphne Maxwell Reid took the role. There was no chemistry between them and Vivian from that point on was merely existing and not in many episodes.

Frank and Carol Lambert (Patrick Duffy and Suzanne Somers of Step by Step) - The Mike and Carol Brady of the 90s but they looked a lot more natural than Robert Reed and Florence Henderson.

Lester and Mary Jenkins (Hal Williams and Marla Gibbs of 227) - You can tell they really loved each other and devoted to one another. It showed on screen.

i think that with this particular thread, it is not just the actors themselves but rather it is the performances of those actors and the sexual tension/chemistry they have on screen and how they convey that chemistry that makes us want to believe that they could've been together in real life.

when you watch a show- be it sitcom or whatever and you look at the male and female pairing, you can from a fan's perspective, get the gist of the mentality of those people, making you understand why they fell for each other in the first place. plus, they have to have that neccessary quality that makes them tick and makes us want to watch them again and again. obviously, there are some sitcom/tv couples of whom don't fit the mould or of whom are deemed incompatible- even though the writers have decided to pair them together

One that stands out in my mind who is not compatible was Max Wright and Anne Schedeen, Willie and Kate Tanner of ALF. I don't know what they were thinking when they paired them as husband and wife.

Another one that was way out in left field was Bob Newhart and Carlene Watkins of Bob. You can tell there was an obvious age difference between those two.

I do find it funny where the TV couples are paired when the actor is quite a few years older than the actress. Some of them are a bit obvious. There are some who can pull it off such as Dick Van Patten and Betty Buckley of Eight is Enough. He was quite a few years older than her but they were still compatible.

another example would be in ugly betty with betty suarez and the nerdy accountant, henry grubstick- in real life america ferreira is like 23 years of age and christopher gorham is 33. america's birth year was 1984, whilst christopher's is 1974. and so the age difference between the two is 10 years, amazingly

In real life, neither of these couples would have worked since both male actors here are gay men

Anywho, if youre talking "chemistry of the actors in the role" ill agree with the first but, as a "couple" "Niles & Daphne" had ZERO chemistry (Whatever chemistry they had, faded as soon as they were finally put together, in the late seasons)

I also think Bill Cosby and Phylicia Rashad were great as a couple on "The Cosby show".

But I also think Max Wright and Anne Schedeen were good as a couple on "Alf". However, I must say that I don't think uncle Jesse and aunt Becky (I'm not sure of the names of the actors) were a good couple on "Full House".

Yes, Bill and Phylicia were a great couple on The Cosby Show and Cosby as well.

I did not think that Max Wright and Anne Schedeen were a good couple on ALF. He looked more of a fatherly figure to her. He looked to nerdy for her. Anne Schedeen is a great looking actress. I remember her as Jack's girlfriend on Three Company's and on a couple of episodes of Family as Nancy's friend from school.

mikey, the fact that the actors on those shows are gay in real-life is not relevant whatsoever. i watch for the characters and at how they perform as those characters. what about in films and tv shows where straight actors play gay roles? nobody bats an eyelid or make a huge fuss about that, and yet the same cannot be said about gay actors playing straight roles because let's face it, in mainstream hollywood it still is a taboo thing for a gay actor playing a gay role in the commercial tv or movie world

These two weren't a couple as in being married but I wish Kevin Arnold and Winnie Cooper were together in real life. I think that would be cool, as their characters on the show, not as Fred & Danica I mean.

The way you look at it, the question becomes "name a tv-show couple so well played you thought it was real." But in that case, the couples on most reasonably popular tv shows qualify one way or another, and it's the exceptions that are interesting -- like Seinfeld. Or Family Guy and the Simpsons, if we stretch to allow cartoons.
