View Full Version : I Think My Smoke Detector Is Haunted
We have a smoke detector in the hallway and its been going off for no reason lately. It's wired into the ceiling and also has a battery back-up. I changed out the battery and its still randomly going off. It woke me up this morning after I'd had about 3 hours of sleep too. Anyone else ever have trouble with them?
bingbangbaby 01-30-2008, 08:42 PM We had a light fixture in the hallway in another house I lived in that NEVER burned out. It was really creepy and I started to think it was haunted or possessed or something too  The bulb literally hadn't been changed since sometime in the mid 80's. It was an old old bulb by some company that didn't even exist anymore. My former roommate still lives there and she still has never changed it.
It sounds like you have a short or something in the ceiling wiring.

Janice 01-30-2008, 09:18 PM Ann, I know this isn't a laughing matter, but your thread title has to be one of the funniest ones I've seen. Perhaps the detector is just broken. If there's a number or if you can get the number of the maker, maybe one of their reps can help you. I'm sure you want to rip it out of the ceiling, but you need protection. I wonder if it's even working at this state. Sorry your going through this. I take my sleep very seriously.
You have the best avatars. The one you have now is killing me, lol.
TripperFan 01-30-2008, 10:06 PM Is it actually going off full blast as if it detected smoke or are the beeps intermittent? If they're intermittent, then it means the battery needs replacing - mine will do that. Actually I replaced a battery not long ago and it started up again just a couple of weeks later. I replaced the battery again and it's fine so it meant that the other battery was a low one also.
If it's going off full blast and there's no steam or smoke in the area - call Ghostbusters! ;)

I think it calls for this guy.

O.k. now that IS downright creepy!

That is sooooo cute!!!! I love Kermit.
I agree that the wiring might be at fault there. It might have a short. That is not good because if you really need it, it might not go off. I prefer the smoke detectors that you just stick on the ceiling (two-sided tape) and they run on batteries. Speaking of which, I need to change the battery!

It goes off "full blast", if we had close neighbors's I'm sure they'd be able to hear it. My husband unwired it, so its not's going off anymore. When it went off that first time, I about had a heart attack thinking there was a fire.

Wow! No wonder the company doesn't exist anymore, no one ever had to buy replacement bulbs.

We unwired it & took the battery out and I'm going to Walmart or Lowes over the weekend to get one of those like you mentioned. The detector is about 4 years old. Wonder how often you're supposed to replace them?

I have had mine for 5 years and it still works. Just got to change the battery once a year. Pick a day of the year to remind yourself abt that, like a holiday or birthday, something that will make it easy to remember. Unlike me, I forgot three months ago to change it, but I finally did yesterday, thanx to your thread. Like I said, I use the one with the two-sided tape. I also have those in the apartments in the building I own. So far, so good.
*ClassicPinUp* 01-31-2008, 06:55 PM Man, this thread reminded me to buy some and put them back up  We use to have them but took them down when they all started this loud, constant beeping (even after we replaced the batteries) and we never replaced them.... that was years ago!
tanquant 01-31-2008, 06:56 PM I have one outside of my bathroom and everytime someone takes a shower and leaves the bathroom door open the steam sets it off. It's really annoying

I think Kermit needs some clothes. I mean, he doesn't even have any pants on. ohno:

Yeah, I'm surprised the Politically Correct Police haven't gone after most of the Muppets and cartoon characters for indicent exposure! Its a wonder any of us grew up knowing what anatomically correct looks like!

Yeah, they should never be mounted too close to a bathroom or where steam can hit it.
