I always liked it when Stack spoke directly with the family members or investigators involved in the cases. For some reason, these interactions were rare and phased out in later seasons. In fact, there were only a handful of occasions where Stack did talk to family or investigators on camera...

-An interview with Detective Richard Garrett about the Henry/Ives case.

-An interview with Detective Arthur Durant about Barbara Jean Horn.

-Interviews with Pat Mealbach and Jennifer Pratt on the 3rd Anniversary show.

-The "Live from the Telecenter" broadcast.

The reason probably was it cost money to fly the investigators out to California to do an interview. Garrett was from Arkansas and Durant from Philadephia I believe. The other two shows you mention are basically "specials" and didn't occur on a weekly basis so I'm not surprised these "one on one interviews" were phased out as the series progressed.

Although the "one one on interviews" were not very common for UM, they were great examples of moments where it was evident that Robert Stack genuinely cared about the cases being presented on the show. :)

I also enjoyed seeing RS interact with those profiled on the show. I remember in an interview him mentioning that he had became friends with Colleen Thompson, the sister of Mickey Thompson. As I was searching to find a link concerning that I came across an interesting transcript of a show that Larry King did about solving crime with Robert Stack. He talk about UM so its a pretty interesting read.

I don't know if this has anything to with it, but one thing I always thought was kind of cool was that they always had some shots of Stack being in the places where the event had actually occurred :)
