Does anyone remember this story? I think it had something to do with five men going missing while on a fishing trip in 1979 and years later, someone found bones in a grave on an island. There's some indication that some of the men are still alive.

Yup, the Sara Jo. Ten years after they disappeared, theboat turned up on an uninhabited island in the Pacific, and nearby the remains of one of the five men was found, buried under some rocks, along with a pad of white papers, square in shape, with silver foil "papers", also square in shape but smaller, between each white sheet of paper.

I read on a web site somewhere a while ago that the family of one of the men had hired a private investigator to try to discover who buried the man who was found. That person evidently concluded that a Thai fisherman, I believe, had in all probability buried the remains, because that set of paper that was found with the body was evidently part of some Thai funeral ceremonies. As far as I know, this was only a best guess - there was no indication the investigator had found the specific fisherman responsible for burying the remains.

Do you still have the links to the websites? This was one of those cases I remembered when I was watching as a kid. And when I started working on the Updates List there was no update to it and not a lot of info to go off of when searching for information so I couldn't find anything. It's always been one I've wondered about. Is there some info further back on this board about it? I don't even know what to look under. I didn't even remember the name of the boat was the Sara Jo until Mozartpc27 posted it as such.

I said it was a Thai fisherman in my last post. Evidently, the speculation was that it was a Taiwanese fisherman who found the remains of the guy in the boat.

I remember that story well because it FREAKED the hell out of me as a kid.

The weird thing was that the missing boat was found abandoned on an island years after the island had previously been searched (which was already after the Sarah Jo had been missing).

So the boat showed up, there was a crude grave with one of the fisherman, and those pieces of paper with the tin foil squares. WEIRD!!!

I've always wondered how the boat could be missing, then show up on an island, then have one of the guys get buried like that. It was always one of my favorites just based on the oddities to it. The article gives a very likely scenario.

No problem Todd Mueller. It was my favorite all-time UM segment. Although, I hate to say it, but whenever one like this gets solved, it sort of robs it of its "mysteriousness" and, therefore (I'm ashamed to admit) interest for me. But this for years was always the one I thought was the best segment they ever did, just for the strangeness of it.

That is too funny... I had the same thought last night! As much as I loved this segment, I had a strange feeling of almost disappointment. I felt like, "That's it? They just drifted? The papers with the tin foil didn't have a more significant or sinister meaning?"

You go that long being freaked/interested in a case that it is bittersweet for it to be explained (or most likely). It's great to have an update, and I feel like a horse's rear when for me it was just a story, but for the families it was so much more. (No offense to family or friends intended.)
