View Full Version : New article on David Hurley's murder
crystaldawn 01-25-2008, 12:12 PM A veteran lurker on this board has kindly sent me two articles concerning the David Hurley case. One is from 5 years ago but the second is from last month:
Here is the one from 2003:
Cold Case Part V David Hurley<BR>Coach shot three times on Route 22
by Zandy Dudiak, Staff Writer
December 3, 2003
David Hurley, 34, was a typical baseball coach/dad, encouraging the young players on his team, including two of his sons, David, 9, and Sean, 6, to hit the ball and run.
He had more time to spend with his sons than some dads.
Dave had worked in maintenance at Kane Hospital in Pittsburgh but became disabled because of complications from a hernia operation. So he volunteered as an assistant coach for Eastmont Baseball Association in 1992.
Joe Bowman of Monroeville, who was the team’s head coach that year, recalls how Dave worked well with kids.
“He loved kids. He was a super-big kid himself.
“He would build a kid’s ego up. He would wink at them and the kids would just glow. The kids just loved him.”
In the early morning hours of Saturday, June 13, Dave left his Jones Avenue home in Turtle Creek to pick up doughnuts for his brother’s Boy Scout troop.
Bill Hurley, whose troop met at St. John the Baptist Church in Plum Borough, had asked his brother to accompany the Scouts on a weekend outing. They were to leave about 5 a.m.
Between 3 and 3:30 a.m., Dave stopped first at the Penn Center Dunkin’ Donuts in Wilkins Township, then drove westbound on Business Route 22 to meet his brother in Penn Hills.
Along the highway, near the intersection of Hawthorne Drive, he was involved in a “real minor traffic accident” when his van was bumped in the side by another car, according to Tom Wolfson, Allegheny County homicide detective. The intersection is just beyond what is now the Wilkins Township Shop ‘n Save.
Dave got out of his green van to exchange insurance information with the driver of a champagne-colored vehicle, possibly a Honda Prelude. The driver, a black male in his mid-to-late 20s, punched him and shot him in the shoulder, then the lower chest, with a .380 automatic, according to Wolfson and Pamela Hurley, Dave’s widow.
Pam feels his killer was “just out to finish the job” when he sent a third bullet through Dave’s back as he turned to run to the van. That was the lethal bullet.
Dave made it back to his van. Despite his wounds, he was able to drive the approximately two miles to his home, making the first right off Route 22 onto Lower Rodi Road, which turns in to Larimer Avenue, then onto Jones Avenue.
Pam was asleep upstairs when Dave screamed out her name and asked her to come downstairs. She was confused because she thought he’d be gone for the weekend.
He told his wife he had been shot. They went into the kitchen.
Pam recalls there was no visible sign of the wounds — until Dave pulled up his shirt.
Not knowing what to do, she handed her husband a dishcloth to use while she called Turtle Creek police to report the shooting.
A paramedic who lived down the street was the first to arrive at the scene. She remembers the police didn’t come in the house right away, perhaps being cautious because they weren’t sure if a shooter were inside.
Dave sat at the kitchen table, giving police details about what had happened. They didn’t go too in depth with the questioning, she recalls, maybe because he didn’t appear to be gravely injured and they thought there would be time later.
And his wounds didn’t seem too severe, Pam says, until he was on the ambulance gurney.
Then he started having problems breathing.
The one blessing that night was their boys slept through all the commotion.
Dave was transported by Life Flight helicopter to Presbyterian University Hospital in Oakland. Pam still didn’t think Dave’s wounds were life threatening.
She was startled to see someone approach her dressed in a suit in the pre-dawn hours when those coming into the waiting room are usually casually dressed and medical personnel are wearing scrubs or uniforms.
“The one thing that really shocked me,” she says, was when he explained he was from the Allegheny County homicide unit.
Pam’s brother, who has a medical background, knew from the way things were going that Dave’s injuries were worse than they first thought.
Dave died in surgery a few hours later at 6:15 a.m.
In addition to his wife, Dave also left behind three sons: David, Sean and Steven, who was 4 at the time his father was murdered.
Out of respect, Eastmont Baseball Association postponed all games scheduled the day of Dave’s funeral, which was held at Jobe Funeral Home in Turtle Creek. He was buried in Church Hill Cemetery in Wilkins Township.
Both Wilkins police and the Allegheny County Police Homicide Division searched for the suspect’s car and attempted to identify Dave’s killer. Police said at the time the car door on the driver’s side may have been damaged and might have green paint on it from the van.
During the mid-1990s, the case was featured on the television show, “Unsolved Mysteries,” hosted by Robert Stack.
Pam says her brother contacted the show’s producers to see if they’d help in the search for Dave’s killer.
The accident and scene at Dave’s home were re-enacted by actors. Pam still sees the segment run once in awhile on the Lifetime cable channel.
In 1995, Wolfson says, police got a break in the investigation when a crime lab determined a gun involved in another case matched the gun used in Dave’s murder. Because the gun had changed hands since the murder, that investigation led nowhere.
Pam says she got a call from police a few years ago that a warrant had been issued through the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration for someone who was a possible suspect, but that also went nowhere.
Wolfson has confidence this case can be solved. Until then, there is no justice for David Hurley.
Police believe they know who killed Dave. Wolfson says the potential suspect is “a good one.”
“We certainly hope this guy messes up down the line.”
They also believe someone out there can help them close this case.
“We never had quite enough evidence to make an arrest,” says Wolfson.“We’ve always believed there are particular people who have much more information but are afraid to get involved.”
Pam says police told her that a woman may hold the key to convicting the killer. She appeals to her for help, asking her to imagine what it is like, especially if she has children of her own.
“If she has children, then certainly now she should understand the need to come forward,” says Pam.
Dave’s three sons have grown up without their father. Steven, who is now a teenager, doesn’t really remember him.
Pam’s thoughts drift to Dave daily, even when she tries not to think about what happened. But it has been particularly hard on the two older boys, who are now young men.
“David and Sean remember everything,” says Pam. “The older they get, the worse it gets.
“To watch their pain is my worst pain.”
Here's the article from last month:
Road rage incident in Wilkins ended as homicide
More than 15 years ago, a minor traffic accident led to the shooting death of a Turtle Creek man, and police are still working to solve the case.
David Hurley, 34, planned to take a group of Boy Scouts on a canoe trip on June 13, 1992, and he left his home at 3 a.m. to buy doughnuts for the kids before the trip, said Allegheny County police Sgt. Andrew Schurman.
Hurley stopped at a shop on Route 22 in Wilkins and got back into his car, detectives said. As he was driving west on Route 22, a man in a champagne-colored Honda Prelude sideswiped Hurley's 1977 Plymouth van, Schurman said.
Hurley pulled over to exchange information with the other driver, Schurman said. A man got out of his Honda and began arguing with Hurley. The Honda driver then punched Hurley in the chest, investigators said.
Hurley was shot more than once during the altercation, police said.
The gunman drove off and Hurley managed to drive himself home, where his wife called 911. Hurley was taken by ambulance to what is now UPMC Presbyterian, Oakland, where he was pronounced dead just after 6 a.m., Schurman said.
"He was an innocent victim," Schurman said of Hurley. "It looks like what started out as a road rage incident escalated to homicide."
Hurley could not provide a detailed description of the shooter. Investigators have not been able to identify the gunman.
scm80 01-25-2008, 03:18 PM ...'cause this is another case that bothered me.
Remember when Stack said "What you are about to see is without warning!"
Huskerz85 01-26-2008, 05:33 AM Reading this just made my blood boil........an innocent man gunned down by nothing more than common street TRASH......
Todd Mueller 01-26-2008, 10:42 PM UM featured a few senseless road rage cases over the years.
The ones that stand out besides the Hurley case:
- The heavy metal DJ who was on his motorcycle and was run down (even though he didn't cause the rager's original anger)
- The lady with the "49ER HUGS" license plates who was followed, and then her friend was shot to death confronting the suspect
- The semi truck driver that hit the guy on the motorcycle and took him for a ride
They caught the guy that did the first one, but the other two are still unsolved, I believe. They all left me feeling frustrated and disappointed in humanity.

I would add Richard Aderson who was killed after a very minor traffic accident, and the baby that was killed while trying to shield himself with his teddy bear. :(

That case was a nightmare without words. I'm glad at least they caught the guy responsible.
All these road rage cases are bad. I've always remembered this one with David Hurley and the fact that there wasn't enough information to get a sketch of the suspect.
It's UM that showed me how dangerous these things could be. I remember nearly getting into an accident on a busy road. The guy drove up beside me and went crazy. I told him I was sorry (I have no idea whose fault it was) but that just seemed to infuriate him more and he wanted me to pull over. I'd seen enough of these cases on UM to know not to do that. He kept this up for two minutes before driving away. Scary, scary stuff.
wiseguy182 01-28-2008, 01:35 AM they're still looking for Richard Aderson's killer. I thought there was a good chance that one would be solved, since they had a good composite sketch of the guy, he was pretty distinctive looking, and New Hampshire is a pretty small state, but the case is at least 10 years old I believe with no update.
there are some definite freaks on the road. I'm paranoid to have people drive immediately behind me. I'm not sure if it's because i've seen some of the UM cases or because I was rear-ended when I was only 19, but I hate people driving immediately behind me.
I don't like that either. People are just crazy sometimes.
Unsolved Mysteries taught me two things. One, never pulled over during a case of road rage. Two, never go to an ATM at night by yourself.
ThatGirlAlso 12-31-2008, 09:22 AM The one thing Unsolved Mysteries didn't mention is that David Eugene Hurley, had a daughter born on October 20, 1979.
My name is Nicole Marie Hurley and as of this day (12-31-08) I am 29 years old.
My mom, Kathleen O'Donnell, was married to my dad before Pam was ever in the picture. Regardless of the fact that they only got married at a courthouse, in the middle of the night in their pajamas because she was pregnant with me, she was still his first wife; his high school sweetheart. Only after they got divorced did he marry Pam and go on to have 3 sons, my half-brothers.
A couple of years ago, I found the middle son, my brother, Sean on MySpace. He and I have been in contact ever since. David and Steven know about me now but didn't until early 2000's when I was getting new tires on my car and the guy who helped me, Russ (David's best friend at the time) asked me if I was related to him and I said, "Yes, David and his brothers are MY half brothers but they don't know about me."
After that day, however, they did. Apparently, Russ told David he met his supposed half sister so, he confronted his mother and she didn't deny it. I had given Russ my phone number to give to him but since he never called, I'm assuming it was too difficult a situation which is understandable.
The ****ed up thing about Pam is, she and my mom never got along. Because of that, she took it out on me and that effected my relationship with my dad (what little of one we had, anyway). My dad used to get me on the weekends until one weekend my mom said I came home and said that Pam hit me. After that, I wasn't allowed over their house.
The last time I remember seeing my dad was when I was 9. His brother, Billy, lived a few houses down the street from where I lived with my mom and step-dad. I remember playing outside and seeing my mom talking to a man on the front porch. Honestly, I didn't even know that it was my dad because like I said, we didn't have much of a relationship. Apparently, he had come over to show me that he'd gotten my name tattooed on him.
Being a young child, I didn't have much say in what went on in my life. Looking back on it now, I wish I'd have been able to spend more time with him while he was on this earth.
He died when I was 12 years old. I remember like it was yesterday. Then, to see the stories on the news and see the articles in the paper mention that he is survived by his 3 SONS and NO mention of his DAUGHTER really made me feel like crap. But, my mom made sure to call up ever news station that would listen and told them that he did in fact have another child.
The main thing about him dying, that I'll never forget, is that I was not allowed to go to his funeral. In fact, my 'darling' step-mother, Pam, had me and my mother police escorted out of the funeral home. Do you know how traumatizing that was for me?
4 years later, almost to the day, in June 1996, my mom, step-dad and I moved to Florida, where I lived until I was 22. I moved back to Pittsburgh for a few years (Nov 2001 - Dec 2004) where one of the first things I did, being that I was now an adult, was find and visit my father's grave to pay my respects after all those years and tell him how much I loved, missed and wished I had been able to have a life with him. I always wanted to be daddy's little girl and unfortunately, never had the opportunity.
It wasn't until 2007 that I found my brother, Sean, on MySpace. Though we haven't met...yet...I'm thankful every day that he even took the time to talk to me and acknowledge the fact that yes, he does have a sister. I loved talking to him and hearing stories about our father. I even sent him old pictures of me, my father and my mother that he seemed to appreciate. And after one particular conversation we had, I can't listen to the song, "Tears in Heaven" by Eric Clapton with out crying my eyes out because it was our father's favorite song.
June of 2009 will mark 17 years since my father was murdered. It will also be my son's 4th birthday. My son, Vincent, will never get to know his grandfather. Yes, he has my step-dad (his pap pap) and yes, I had my step-dad as a father figure growing up but that doesn't change the fact that my biological father was murdered in cold-blood.
I hope that one day, his killer is caught and gets everything that he deserves; selfish bastard that he is.
Sorry about such a long comment but thank you for taking the time to listen to my story.
-Nicole

crystaldawn 12-31-2008, 01:13 PM Thanks so much Nicole for posting! It always nice to hear from loved ones whose cases were profiled on UM. First off very sorry about your father's death. No we had no idea he had a daughter as UM didn't mention it. Everything you've went through in regards to your father sounds horrible. I am glad you have been able to reconnect with a stepbrother though. I'm sure that would make your father happy. Once again my sympathy and thanks for posting. :)
ThatGirlAlso 12-31-2008, 03:07 PM Thank you, so much. And thank you for even caring enough to post about his death.
Once correction, though. Half-brother, not step-brother. We have the same dad, remember?
= )
crystaldawn 12-31-2008, 03:17 PM One correction, though. Half-brother, not step-brother. We have the same dad, remember?

Oh yes, sorry about that. :)
ThatGirlAlso 12-31-2008, 03:21 PM It's ok.
I added some links to pictures if you'd like to see them.
I couldn't get the actual picture to show up. I'm not familiar with this message board and the HTML yet.
GavinD80 12-31-2008, 10:24 PM I was wondering about this ace. Sad to see it hasn't been resolved yet.

Listen Nicole, I'm Pam hurley's sixteen year old daughter,Lacey, but i have a different father. I'm VERY offended of how bad you talk about my mother. Youre distorting of what really happened and forgot to mention how your mother is. Your jealous mother brainwashed you and my brother Sean told me the sickening things you said to him that made him very upset. You told Sean that if David wasnt with my mom, he would still be alive. THATS ****ED UP! My brothers David, Sean, and Steve are the most amazing brothers i could ever ask for. I also have a little sister, Breanna whos 13. My mother had been in so much pain over her husband's death. She had turn to alcohol for relief for practically my whole life and i have been fatherless also. But my mom completely changed her life around, fore should would do anything for her children. My poor mother has been through so much and i commend her for her strength. To survive what my mom been through, not just the death of David, you have to be superwoman. And i dont want you making her seem any less then a strong woman.
And for those who are interested about my 3 amazing half-brothers... Steven is now 22.. He attends California University and is majoring in business. He has always been extremely intelligent and a straight A student. Steve was always a father figure toward me and was always there for me ( hes the strict one). I looked up to him all my life. In highschool he was known for his athleticism. He was a FOOTBALL STAR! He was the best player on the team. Steve was good at anything he tried. Wrestling, track, baseball, basketball etc. He was also popular and good looking. The girls are always chasing after him. He has never had a sip of alcohol in his life or even puffed a cigarette. And he has a very strong mind set and is going to be successful. My intelligent brother can fix anything, computers, cars, anything. He is going to transfer to San Diego California soon which is the top business school in the country. Steve always spends time with my sister and I and has the biggest heart. What brother do you know buys an xbox, rockband, and designer clothes for his sisters. Hes been waiting in line since two in the morning in the pouring, freezing, windy (Its Black Friday) so he can get a laptop for my sister.Steve has been successful in so many other ways i couldn't possibly type it all. Steven had to grow up without his father but is living an amazing life that i know his father couldnt help to be proud of. He will make an amazing father one day.
Sean is 25 years old. He goes to Pittsburgh University and is majoring in English literature. He wants to be an English professor and/or a writer. Sean is the funny and creative one. He loves having fun with my sister and I. He had a lifethreatining heart problem all his life and was said to only life for a few days after he was concieved. But he is 25 still going strong. He is getting engaged, about to graduate college (hes been sick), and his heart condition is scary but has never stopped him. Of course he cant be a professional wrestler like on WWE haha :p which he loves. Sean has always been there for me and is an incredible brother. He is such a heartwarming guy that so many people admire. Finacially, he isnt doing to well but when he gets his degree it will all way off. He deserves everything for how much he helps his family. I have a lot more to say about him about him but i got to get ready :p.. LOVE YA SEAN :)
Last but not least, David who is 27. David was the best, left-handed pitcher in baseball. Actually the best pitcher in Plum have ever had. Scouts came over to check Dave out when he was only 10! he was a child prodigy.Being his father was a baseball couch, dave continued his love for baseball. With the major leagues a possibility, a tragedy occured. He injured his elbow and had multiple surgeries but could never pitch the same again. Out of my brothers and mom, dave had been the most effected of his fathers death. He has many psychological problems but is going to therapy. Everyone in my family has depression and anxiety but Dave is really struggling. he didnt graduate highschool, nor is going to college. But I still have hopes for him. He has overdosed on heroin and almost died but no longer has a drug problem. He is still a great, and very intelligent guy. When dave helped with softball i got a warm yet sickening feeling in my heart. Seeing him on the baseball mound was a terrible heartache to watch. He could be in the major leagues right now but i know there is a reason he isnt. I know his life is going to turn around.
All my brothers are completely different.. Steve has blonde hair, Sean has red, and dave has black.. And its all natural. Steve likes rap, Sean likes rock, and Dave likes metal. And i cant even explain how different they are mentally but they all connect. Eventhough we have different fathers, we all share pain in our family and love eachother dearly through all the drama and mess. Ive been living with my brothers since 94 well sean and steve moved out.. we may have different fathers but to me, they're my full blood. I love them and i know they would do anything for my sister and I and vise-versa. Im proud to be a Hurley. And to have such an incredible family.
ThatGirlAlso 11-26-2010, 02:45 PM Lacey,
I never had anything against your mother and I still don't. Her beef was with MY mother who, I never made out to be a saint. Trust me, my mother is FAR from perfect but I do know that she loved my father.
I'm 31 years old now but when everything went down, I was a young child. The last time I saw my dad, I was 9 years old. He died when I was 12. All I ever said was even though she didn't like MY mom, she shouldn't have taken it out on ME and I should've have been allowed to pay last respects to MY dad at HIS funeral. I didn't even know where he was buried until 11 years after he died.
I don't know why Sean would lie and say it but, I swear on MY son's life that I NEVER said, "If my dad wasn't with Pam, he'd still be alive."
I have no doubt that your mother is a loving, devoted mother to all of you and I'm glad that you have her in your life. And, I am truly sorry that she lost my father and was left to raise her kids alone.
I'm also glad that you have your brothers, my half-brothers in your life. I'm actually jealous of that because I grew up an only child on my mom's side and always longed for a relationship with them. That's why in my adult hood, I reached out.
Like I said, I don't know why Sean would say that unless he got something that I said my MOM said twisted and thought I said it but, I can assure you, I did not. My mom can be the biggest bitch, ever. I don't blame your mom for hating her. Me.....I'm not a hateful or spiteful person; just a grown woman who misses her daddy.
I wish nothing but the best for all of you. And, tell your mother I never believed the stories my mom told me about her, honestly. I just wish they would've known back then what they know now so, petty things could've been set aside for the sake of the kids.
nicoge21 12-03-2010, 02:25 PM Wow.

I understand where your coming from. I too have grown up without a father. I thought some other guy was my father until the sixth grade, it was tramatic. I always felt empty not having my other half. I felt lost, confused, lied to, and a fool. I didnt know who the other half of me was. But it made me grow. I found myself on my own. Its hard but you cant think of the things you could or should have but what you do have, or it spoils everything completely. I live by some of these qoutes; “Life is thickly sown with thorns, and I know no other remedy than to pass quickly through them. The longer we dwell on our misfortunes, the greater is their power to harm us.",Don't dwell on what went wrong. Instead, focus on what to do next. Spend your energies on moving forward toward finding the answer.” “It does not do to dwell on dreams and forget to live.”
When i researched this case a bit and heard many sides of the story, i have a few scenarios as to who killed David. Whats sketchy to me is the person running him off the road and murdering him with 'no motive' or was there. No one carries a gun without a motive or run people of the road.. What i concluded, is someone knew he was going to the boy scout trip that night.. It was a planned event. But why would someone plan out his murder? Well im not saying this is a fact, its just its a scenario, so dont get offended. Like you know, Your mother and mine didnt like eachother, well my mom actually didnt have a problem, your mom was just jealous. I believe your mom loved David very much but i dont think David loved her nearly as much. If you would call it love or just revenge. On davids will, he put my three brothers and my mother to have all the money. Noone else. Why is that? Your mother didnt want you to see David, not the other way around. Your mom wasnt to upset about it till she saw how much support and money my family recieved. She was extremely jealous. My mom honestly didnt kick you out of his funeral, she doesnt even have the power to do that. Your mom obviously didnt put up a fight, if that did supposidely happen. Maybe that guy who murdered him was paid to kill him over a jealousy issue? Maybe you should question your mother a little bit more or something? And the other scenario is it was about a drug deal. Ive heard rumors that he was on drugss. So it couldve been about money and drugs. But i dont think thats true. Or it couldve been some crazy guy who killed him for no reason. Who knows.. Just thinking of the possibilities. Like some people said my mom killed him... uhhh that makes sense.
Im sorry for everything that has happened, its a huge ball of mess. But your not the only one in pain who lost a father.. My family has gotten through it and so can you.Youre putting all your efforts into this. Try to let it go.. Im not telling you to forget about your dad just to let the whole case go and everything that happened like are mothers, the money, the lying, the reason fo his death etc. Just forget about the murder completely. You shouldnt be jealous either. My family let the murder go but theyre still missing him. Were not a perfect family if thats what your thinking. Its far far from it. But im just saying you can get through it if you just accept what happened. I wish you all the luck, health, and wealth. We are all gonna be dead one day, dont make the time you have to live like death already. Live!! And remember no dwelling.

Clockworkhigh 07-13-2011, 12:30 AM While it isn't unusual by any means to go out and grab some donuts, isn't it a bit strange that David left the house at 1:30am? I have times when I am so wound up I don't want to sleep either but if he was going on a camping trip the next day wouldn't he need SOME sleep?
I am speculating here and I know David's daughter has posted on here and such but is there the possibility that he was involved in some shady dealings? On the surface he could have been a good man, and maybe he was inside and out but we have seen seemingly good men do bad deeds behind closed doors. Could he have been involved in a drug deal and just didn't want to bring that to the forefront which caused him to come up with the stor?
Was there proof that David's car was damaged, even a nic? The story is a little vague. A very common car of the suspect's is described and all David says is that it's a "black man." Again, it COULD have been just a random black man but if you are making a story up would it not be pretty standard to claim a black man is behind it? Doesn't that kind of take the high road?
Also the investigator felt he was unusually calm during the interview after just being shot. And why come all the way home? You've been shot, get to a payphone/gas station and call 911. Why come home?
1990 UM fan 07-14-2011, 10:24 PM Not to upset anyone here, but here is what I think happened to David. Other than the theories of the case being a random killing or David being involved in shady business, I think he might have been going through a mid-life crisis or something. It's possible that he told his wife he was leaving to get donuts and take some kids on a camping trip but instead went to meet with a mistress. I find it odd that you'd start a camping trip so early in the morning like 1 am or 2 am. I think on his way back from meeting with a mistress, the husband, boyfriend or some family member of the mistress found David and hit his van and David thinking it was an accident stepped out and intended on exchanging insurance information like the show said. We all know what happened next. This is just a thought, it may or may not be true. Even if it were true, David certaintly did not deserve this. I do hope with all my heart that the real truth is discovered someday and the guy responsible is locked away in prison.

I don't think it's that unlikely that he went out that early to get the donuts. Maybe the trip was leaving at 3 or 4 in the morning? Maybe David couldn't sleep? Who knows? If David was shot repeatedly by someone he knew or knew of, don't you think he would have spilled the beans so that person could be caught? Seems unlikely that after being shot repeatedly he'd continue to hold on to the "lies" about his "affair"? I just don't buy it. I think this was a case of David being at the wrong place, at the wrong time. The guy was probably on some sort of drug (PCP, meth) which is why he reacted so violently. I just hope the killer is dead or in prison, and I hope there is closure to this case someday.

TheCars1986 - I hope you can now understand why I am concerned about interracial crime against people of European descent. It does not help to ignore these issues or more innocent people will be hurt. Of course I wish to live in a world where everyone could just get along regardless of background, but we live in no such world.
Sean Conner 12-10-2012, 06:25 AM This was definitely an interesting, an unexpected read. I never imagined this thread developing the way it did.
Too bad the family members are long gone now ... they made things interesting.
TheCars1986 12-10-2012, 03:44 PM I reread the 2003 article and I didn't realize police had a suspect! How is there not "enough evidence for an arrest"? Couldn't they just determine if this guy ever had access to or owned the vehicle described by Hurley? Wouldn't that and the description given by David be enough?

That and a gun with bullets similar or exact as the ones that killed David Hurley.

Did you read my post?
mikewho 03-04-2013, 12:33 PM I've never really felt that any of the family members knew anything about the murder or planned it. What I think happened was similar to how the dramatization showed on um most likely. A car accident that got out of hand seems plausible. It's easy to think David may have been in on a drug deal gone bad but from what I've seen there is no reason to think that. David seemed like a normal decent guy that was at the wrong place at the wrong time. Does the case have a few weird aspects to it? Sure, but the main thing we do know is there is a murderer still out there that needs to be caught.
Francium 06-21-2014, 07:34 AM This is the craziest thread ever lol. WOW
Anyway, I always felt bad about this case because the poor guy went to get donuts and got shot by some random guy. And this whole case strikes me as a random killing.
Concerning police not having enough evidence, who knows? They might just have rumors in the area and circumstantial evidence but nothing to establish presence. It could be anything.
EDIT: I watched the conclusion and looked at a map of Route 22. No idea why cops think he was local. If he was, he would have been found by now with a gold prelude car and that he's black. I get the impression the killer was some crackhead possibly making a run across state lines. Route 22 spans several states. It was a minor accident, and the guy chimped on David Hurley, killing him in cold blood and driving off. Drug runners tend to have such a low value for human life.
But I will add too that it is my firm belief that people who do things like that or are impulsive express it many times over the course of their lives, and he's almost certainly in prison now as UM has shown over the years.
DALLASTEXAN!! 02-04-2015, 03:50 PM I saw this segment again this morning. I didn't realize there was a known suspect. It always seems like there is more to every story behind the scene. But don't you think if there was a drug or premeditated murder angle thay UM or the detectives later would have mentioned it? It seems like it would have come out easier if he were murdered over drugs or was a contract killing. Random acts of violence especially road rage are hard to solve. Most likely it was a criminal that didn't want to go to jail and he made a stupid decision.
DALLASTEXAN!! 02-05-2015, 02:51 AM Pam knows who did it ;)
I'm surprised no one followed this up. 1 post and its this? Interesting. Wish they would have elaborated more.
RightOnDude 06-25-2015, 11:31 PM I saw this case for the first time today. It's surprising it isn't discussed more. From the articles it doesn't appear the cops put forth a herculean effort to solve the crime ...
"police got a break in the investigation when a crime lab determined a gun involved in another case matched the gun used in Dave’s murder. Because the gun had changed hands since the murder, that investigation led nowhere."
So they found someone who had the gun, they asked him where he got it, he said "some guy" and they drop it?
"Pam says police told her that a woman may hold the key to convicting the killer. She appeals to her for help, asking her to imagine what it is like, especially if she has children of her own."
Well Pam, you shouldn't need to be the one appealing to this woman. The cops need to appeal to her to tell them what she knows, under a bright light in a closed room for 24 hours.
Yes, I know this is probably not how it works in the real world, but c'mon, it sounds like they have forensics on a weapon a person of interest....but had no one making it their primary job to figure this one out.

5+morphology 06-26-2015, 01:45 PM Extremely sad story. Unfortunately these families have gone through an absolute nightmare, and psychological issues would be expected. Sadly the legacy of this young man is only tarnished by family members taking shots at each other online. Having viewed this site to see if there have been any updates, only to read other's disparaging comments about his wife, is unsettling. I can only hope the behavior of these family members has not hindered the ongoing investigation. Regardless of who was closer to the victim, and how others acted while grieving should not be an issue. The villain here is the shooter, and I would hope such a tragedy would bring the family members closer together.

Yes welcome to the boards. I have to say when I first saw this segment I thought this would be a case that would never be solved given the time that passed and the lack of details. Hopefully the person is identified/caught for all of the family's sake so they can all move on completely.
baloony 02-26-2016, 03:34 PM Listen Nicole, I'm Pam hurley's sixteen year old daughter,Lacey, but i have a different father.
Judyhymesisalive 04-30-2016, 09:55 AM I have watched this segment a few times and the more i watch it the more it makes me think there was something else to it. I have a feeling it was a drug deal gone bad because why did David go home and not straight to a hospital? Where there any other incidents of shootings before or after David?
Uconn 05-25-2016, 12:41 PM I've watched this story a bunch of times. It seem so odd the way this whole thing went down. They didn't mention the doughnuts in the UM episode. They made it seem like the guy just left to go out for a ride because he couldn't sleep. Ok that I could accept, but at 2am you stop to go get some doughnuts and that time of night a car "just comes out of no where". That's the part that gets me, it just to coincidental. I believed they said it was a country road. If it was in rush hour traffic or something that sounds more likely to happen(Like the UM with the guy in NY who was on his way home and was hit and the guy shot him on the side of the road). And since there were no other witnesses. The road must have been empty of any other traffic. I think the others on here who think it may have been a drug deal or something else that lead to the shooting, and he was trying to cover it up. It just happen that he wasn't counting on complications that would kill him. It sucks for all his kids.

Hi Wiseguy182 I must have blocked that out every time I watched this episode. That's fine. What ever reason he was out is not really important. The real mystery is how you get side swiped on a empty country road with no other traffic.

I don't think so. It's East of Pittsburgh kind of a rural borderline suburb area. I was born 30 miles south of Pittsburgh its night and day the further you get from the city. That's why I said at that time in the morning doesn't really make sense that you wouldn't notice someone driving erratically enough to side swipe you out of nowhere. I guess anything is possible, but like a lot of people have said on this thread the guy drove home instead of going to a hospital or police station. and was calm when the police questioned him.

Maybe his home was closer than a police station or hospital? The man had just been shot several times and was probably in shock, not thinking clearly. I really see this as a random act of violence- road rage or possibly even a serial killer.

That's a possibility. For someone in shock he knew color of the person who shot him what make and model and color of the car. I can't believe there are that many champagne colored Honda Preludes in the Commonwealth. It shouldn't have been that hard to track down the car since that's not a common color like (Black, White,Red,Green,Blue) if it existed at all.

I disagree with this. The fact that he went out to get donuts supports the random act of violence theory. It appears that his trip to the donut store was indeed what it was by all accounts. So unless you have more info I'm not buying into your theory but I do recognize it as possible and an angle that I hope was eliminated. I would find it difficult to believe that this case would have ever made it on uM if David were into drugs of some sort during that time of his murder. Or to put into a better context I would of expected them to make mention of it from day one.
as we have seen over the years with these cases random encounters of violent crime are the most difficult to solve. Investigators would need that critical information to see if David's story was accurate just to form a baseline of David and move out from there. IMHO if David were involved with drugs a routine investigation would have yielded that information.

This appears to be the case. He had to ride by helo to the hospital so I think that alone tells you the situation he was in. Back then he may not of had a cell phone so if he were closest to home that would have been the instinctual decision to survive. If he knew his killer I'd imagine being so gravely injured(the man was wounded 3 times) I think he would have told police. According to wiki authorities do have a suspect but not enough evidence. I wish we knew more there.
wiseguy182 05-28-2016, 05:23 AM was calm when the police questioned him.
This is exactly what you're supposed to do in an emergency situation. Remain calm.

Even if the "drug deal gone bad" scenario happened as you say, that still wouldn't give David Hurley any possible motive for describing a person and car that didn't exist. He was dying and almost certainly would have wanted his murderer to pay for it.
Considering the time of night this happened, it's really not a huge stretch to think there was some wacko out there that freaked out and shot him.
DALLASTEXAN!! 05-28-2016, 05:38 AM This is exactly what you're supposed to do in an emergency situation. Remain calm.

It had to be someone who was either on drugs/alcohol or was desperate enough not to want to be arrested so he shot him. Not that hard to believe. Strange things happen everywhere in small and big towns alike.

...especially in the middle of the night/wee hours of the morning.
NYSleuth 05-28-2016, 07:45 AM This appears to be the case.
I forgot about that. So yeah, he was probably farther away from the nearest hospital than home and figured he wouldn't be able to make it that far. And with his wife at home, giving her the details and having her call for help seemed a better choice. On a sad note, maybe he also feared he may not make it and wanted to be w/ his wife at that moment, just in case.

Yes.
wiseguy182 05-28-2016, 07:55 AM We also need to take into account the possibility that the perp was driving a stolen car (or had committed some other crime) and didn't want the police and/or insurance companies to get involved, which would have certainly blown the lid off what he did.

Very plausible. That could have been the trigger. Minor accident, David tries to get his insurance info, the perp gets paranoid...
Janel "Jaycee" Miller 05-28-2016, 08:18 AM That's a possibility.
Is it possible he got the color of the car wrong? He had been shot after all and it was the middle of the night. And for what its worth, the car could have been from out of state. At that time of day, you can be in Ohio, West Virginia and even parts of Maryland in less than two hours. I wonder if authorities would have checked motor vehicle records in surrounding states in 1992.
mozartpc27 06-16-2016, 12:22 PM Holy buckets.
Somehow I missed this thread. Interesting how the respective wives seem to be pointing the finger at each other... not unexpected at all, but interesting.
I need to find this segment and rewatch.
Exactly my reaction.
I had no idea they had gotten as far as they had gotten with the investigation. And then all the drama in this thread. Whoa.
Hambone2421 08-22-2016, 11:50 AM Wow, I had never seen this case until today. I immediately came to the boards to see if there was a resolution. Sadly, there isn't one. I read the thread and the mention of David's daughter. How terrible I feel for her not being able to even attend her father's funeral. I hope that one day, David's killer will be caught.

yeah another case where there is good description of a suspect vehicle. the way UM put out the animation of the Honda prelude still stands out in my memory albeit I have not seen the segment in a very long time. I know there is some controversy on this thread if I recall....I always felt that he was sincere in his recount of what happened. regardless of the situation he did not deserve to be shot and killed like that. It is a shame that he did not make it out of surgery because he may have been able to provide more details to solve the case.
Janel "Jaycee" Miller 06-05-2018, 08:11 PM Hi Wiseguy182 I must have blocked that out every time I watched this episode. That's fine. What ever reason he was out is not really important. The real mystery is how you get side swiped on a empty country road with no other traffic.
FWIW, Route 22 was likely not an empty road. This road is very US Route 22, a major road and the crime likely happened within a short driving distance of downtown Pittsburgh, one of the larger metropolitan areas in the northeast. Just sayin.
James T 06-30-2018, 06:36 AM Not really buying the guys story-he decided to go out somewhere between 1.30-3.00 am as there seem to be different times floating around to buy some doughnuts? Then some guy who he doesn't know just randomly decided to drive his vehicle into his & assaults & then shoots him three times when he gets out to exchange details? I suspect he was out looking to score drugs or meet another woman, either the deal went bad or the woman's husband/partner caught him with her-likely the woman the police are looking for.

David left his house at 1:30 a.m., and came back home at 3 a.m. according to UM. You'd have to figure that their was some damage to David's car, and an actual check into whether or not he arrived at a donut shop. The cops believed his story. I suspect the guy who hit him was on probation, doing something illegal in the car (drinking, drugs) when he hit David. That's why he violently reacted when David got out to exchange information.
This (https://triblive.com/x/pittsburghtrib/news/pittsburgh/s_24169.html) article says he left at around 3 and came back home at around 3:30 a.m. That seems more plausible, and fits with his story.

Yep, the 3-30 timeline seems more likely, still don't get going out to buy doughnuts that time of the morning though-how many places are even open at that time, here in the UK you wouldn't find anywhere open at that hour in 1992, although I know America there were/are some open all night petrol station places etc. Don't really see the guy doing anything other than driving off in that situation, why shoot somebody three times & risk a life sentence or even the death penalty over nothing?

I'll never forget my first night here. I was jet lagged and just looking for something to eat. everything was closed. it is so different in that regard...not bad for me though. I like the fact that people close their businesses at a decent hour. I have also not eaten a donut since I lived in Texas.

Before I got married, when I couldn't sleep I would frequently go out between 1-3am. Not only was there no traffic, but I could shop for groceries or get gas in peace. I don't think it's fair to automatically assume a night owl automatically has bad intentions.
Just in my average suburban Canadian neighbourhood there is a grocery store, coffee shop, McDonalds, 2 gas stations and a pharmacy all open 24 hours so I am clearly not the only night owl.

Same.
If you've ever had a night shift or call experience at any point in your life, a 3 AM donut run doesn't seem so astonishing. Or, especially, if you have to be up early anyway. When I was in the military I frequently woke up hours before an already early report time simply because I couldn't sleep anticipating the early wake-up.
I believe the way David Hurley reported the events is exactly what happened.
baloony 12-11-2019, 03:58 PM UM featured a few senseless road rage cases over the years.
As well as the hit and run case where the guys were run off of the road by some crazy racist redneck in North Carolina in late 1988
jOHnNyD 12-11-2019, 06:44 PM I always wondered why it was assumed the driver of the tractor trailer that hit Jay Durham must have intended on killing him. The episode even assumes the second truck driver that stopped to help to remove the bike from the front of the truck was told as a coverup that the motorcycle was probably abandoned or left parked on the highway. Why couldn’t the truck driver that hit Jay also assume that? Sure they were probably looking around for Jay too, but that doesn’t mean they were looking for the rider to finish him off.
Lulu5000 05-20-2021, 07:23 PM I just saw this UM story for the first time and had to go online because it was so fishy I wanted to see if others had the same suspicions. Firstly, when a white person says a "black guy did it" and there are no other witnesses a flag needs to be raised. Not that black men can't murder white men, but we know from history that it's a common cover for someone who is not black. I'm not saying this should even be a red flag, but a yellow flag to proceed with caution and examine other facts of the incident to see if all else correlates. In this case it doesn't. Secondly, deciding to leave your home because you can't sleep is odd. I don't recall the mention of donuts in the episode, but I do believe that UM says wherever David was he was heading back to his brother's house when the incident occurred. Why then did he go home after being shot? Was he closer to home than his brother's? Thirdly, since there were (presumably) no other witnesses, and he chose to leave the scene of the crime, David could have made up any possible story to account for his wounds. The one told was the one scenario most difficult to trace, thus adding to the suspicion.
My first thought was the mistress theory - a woman with whom he was having an affair and he broke it off or was caught and someone was angry and shot him. However, I could also see a scenario where his wife was involved, and she could be the woman who police are saying they need to come forward. The police purposely being vague so as not to tip her off to suspicion. And I think the fact they say they have a suspect all but confirms it's someone local - which then also punches another hole in the random road rage theory. Of course it's possible, but with the heavy emphasis on the car and car color, that would've been very difficult for a local to hide in the days following the incident with such heavy local media coverage.
This is all theory, of course, and not intended to hurt the family. I really hope we learn the truth sometime soon.

There is zero evidence for any of this. And the fact that there are no witnesses is not unusual considering this happened in the middle of the night.
And as for red flags being raised about him saying the black guy did it, can we please drop the politically correct BS and acknowledge people of all races commit violence?

You've never had something on your mind, or just been unable to sleep because you can't shut your brain off, and decided to take a short drive or something to try to relax/focus on something else? Because I know I have.

Lulu5000 05-21-2021, 10:30 AM I've been unable to sleep and tried to focus on other things to relax, but have never gone for a drive. For me, it would require an alertness that would be counterproductive to trying to relax enough to sleep. It would be interesting to maybe do a poll on YouTube or Facebook to see how common going for a drive is in the middle of the night if one can't sleep. It might lay this point to rest.

I’m not going to speak for everyone, but when I go for a drive after not sleeping well, it isn’t to put myself to sleep, it’s to start my day. I’ve been up and just decided to go into the office extra early for example. I think in this case, David was doing something like that (I think he was going to buy donuts for the next day IIRC?). When people leave their house after a sleepless night, they’ve usually given up on trying to sleep and have just decided to do something else
SageSlowdive 05-22-2021, 11:07 PM I used to manage a retail store - there were quite a few nights I couldn't sleep and decided to go into work early and finish projects/paperwork that needed completed. Obviously this was frowned upon by corporate because I was putting myself in a risky situation (coming into the store before dawn alone) so I could see where he might just say screw it and leave.

I can relate, I go through this all of the time with not being able to sleep before a restart of my schedule or when its something out of the ordinary. which military life is good at changing things up on people. I also struggle to sleep the night before I travel anywhere away from home and I prefer leaving early on a long day of travel. I don't find his behavior odd.

with that said I don't see any reason not to believe David's story to be true. especially if police were able to substantiate that he did get donuts and was in a vehicle accident. In America, donut shops and bad driving are a 24/7 thing.
I recall the Dorothy Donovan murder. that seemed unbelievable, in fact if you watch FF episode, the police didn't even believe it. yet it happened exactly as described. and that crime had nothing to do with race in my opinion, and all to do with a desperate violent criminal being out of his mind on drugs.

I think it's pretty simple - people kill other people...with guns. Of course bad people will always find some way of harming others, but does your average American need an AR-15? Answer to that is no. We have the highest levels of gun violence in the world.

Second of all, Its not your business to decide what guns I need and what guns I don't need. Nor is it the government's. My guns have never killed anyone nor have they bothered you. WishfulDreamer 11-18-2023, 08:03 PM Here in L.A. we recently had a guy who got out of his vehicle on multiple occasions to attack other drivers (usually by striking their vehicles with a pipe). He only got five years, sadly (and he was prone to other violent attacks). But footage of him attacking was pivotal in identifying him.
https://www.latimes.com/california/story/2023-02-01/tesla-road-rage-suspect-los-angeles-history-of-violence-threats
Just like the Brayman Hollow Road and Richard Aderson segments, random attacks like that on David Hurley are going to be very difficult to solve. Thankfully, the increase in dashcams these days will hopefully make identifying violent road ragers a lot easier now. Sadly, those weren't around when these UM cases happened. It will likely take a confession or anyone the attackers confessed to coming forward to ever solve these cases.

Wonderful how you cherry picked what I said - I used the AR-15 AS AN EXAMPLE of a gun that everyday people shouldn't have access to. I'm not going to go down your rabbit hole of 'tyranny'.

Actually that is not true. Specifically speaking of "gun violence" meaning homicides by gun, we're not even in the top 10. That goes to most of our neighbors to the south, overrun by gangs and drug cartels.
https://wisevoter.com/country-rankings/gun-deaths-by-country/
When talking about "deaths by gun" that also takes into account suicides and accidents, and even then we're still not the "highest." We come in third. And you can cross reference that link above with a few others you'll find online. Same thing.
If you do not think the average American needs an AR-15, then you also don't think they need a Ruger Mini-14, Smith & Wesson M&P, or one of the many other rifles classified as "Modern Sporting Rifles." They come in semi-automatic, bolt, lever and pump action. They are just as deadly as an AR-15 style, though some don't look very scary.
All the rifles mentioned are legal to purchase. You pull the trigger once, it fires once. They are not "weapons of war" and thankfully, it's not up to people like you to decide what an "average American" can buy or drive or eat.

Amen. These things are what the anti gun, disarm everyone crowd fails to understand. Gun control and tougher gun laws means only criminals and cartels have guns and you are pretty much at their mercy. Not to mention the government.
Even in gun control countries where gun violence is low they never consider what price they pay. I saw during COVID an interview in Australia with some pencil necked loser basically laying down the law there of what the people could and could not do during the virus. It was the most condescending tyrannical speech I ever saw. This guy epitomized why the founders wrote the second amendment. They have to feel at least some threat of getting piled on and hanged or they can do anything they want to you. That doesn't mean you want to do anything like that, or that we are violent, just means that at least some fear of the people has to exist in criminals and government.
TheCars1986 11-21-2023, 12:05 PM I'm willing to wager that David Hurley's killer probably obtained his gun illegally or was in illegal possession of.
XCalibur 11-22-2023, 01:42 AM I'm willing to wager that David Hurley's killer probably obtained his gun illegally or was in illegal possession of.
Its been awhile since I watched the segment, but wasn't the killer supposed to have been fairly well dressed and driving a relatively nice car? If that's the case, I'd say the odds might be better he got it legally. He might not be someone with a criminal record but rather has a relatively decent paying job and a prominent community member. I do remember he was African American but might not be remembering the rest accurately.
I always had the gut feeling David Hurley's shooter was probably someone in the mold of an Adam Emory. Kind of a self important a-hole who couldn't be bothered with a car wreck and just took his rage out on David for what he perceived was him causing a nuisance. Could be totally wrong but its the impression I kind of remember from the segment.
I think we can all agree that road rage is a big problem in this country, definitely has a way of turning normally nice people into borderline lunatics.
norty840 11-22-2023, 02:42 AM Hey, this is Sean Hurley, David's middle son. I was just about to turn seven when my dad died. I'm 38 now. I've followed this thread for years now. My older brother and I especially remember our dad very well; he was awesome. I have no idea what happened that night; and how this thread turned into a gun control issue I'll never know. Here's what I want to say: I'm not anti gun, I'm anti sin. We're all sinners, and therefore, we all die. Every problem in this world can be traced back to sin, beginning with Satan's sin. I didn't realize Jesus was the truth until I was 32 years old. But now that I know him and I love him, and I know he died for our sins and rose from the dead, his Spirit living in my heart has given me real peace, real reconciliation, and real, true, eternal life. I forgave the man who killed my dad. Jesus gave me the heart to do that, because once you realize what God did for you, you can't help but forgive others. I don't wish harm on anyone; I just want everybody to receive Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior because he really is the way, the truth and the life. And it's really true that no one comes to the Father except through him. If you don't know him, seek him with ALL OF YOUR HEART and you will find him. If you don't think you need a Savior; if you think you can atone for your own sins or that you have no sin at all, please go to God in prayer and allow him to show you the truth. Jesus is the truth and he will make you free!
Thanks for letting me share.

Welcome to the board Sean and thank you for posting! Most of us can't even imagine what it is like to lose a loved one to violence, especially such senseless violence as this. And losing your Dad at such a young age had to be terrible, thoughts and prayers for your family from me and many others on here I imagine.
As for the whole gun control thing, it was kind of my fault. One poster made a comment about America's gun laws and I felt compelled to call him out on it and it sort of opened a can of worms. I have a tendency to do that sometimes. Simply feel gun control distracts from the major issues that lead to a lot of this violence, mostly by the way we treat each other and it irks me when people want to blame guns.
Obviously, we don't know who killed your dad or what drove them to do such an insane thing, I read the police have a suspect and have never had enough evidence to charge him. Hopefully you and your family can still have closure on this.

Was your dad saved ? Was he a true Christian then?!

My pleasure! Thank you very much for your thoughts and prayers and for your sympathy and understanding.
Like I said, I've been following this board for a long time now; I know my sisters both commented on here at some point. But, especially after having been saved by Christ, I just wanted to finally add my two cents.
And I'm with you on the "gun control" thing. I'm completely and utterly a-political. In the sense that I don't vote and I don't care. Because, in my opinion, it's like pro wrestling (which I grew loving thanks to my dad): the two sides pretend to fight but they're really all working for the same team. It's like a big joke, the whole world system and everything we see on TV. Or like George Carlin said, it's a big club, and we ain't in it. So I don't even get involved in any way. We're all being lied to, and yeah, they don't want us to be able to defend ourselves; they're waiting for the opportunity to bring the hammer down, and they will. Even a cursory glance at the Bible will tell someone as much. This was understood long ago.
As far the suspect goes, my mom told my older brother the name of the guy who did it. She never told me the guy's name, but I'm sure if I asked she would tell me. I'm just beyond it now because I've forgiven him, so at this point I want him to have a relationship with Jesus more than anything. The police know, too. It's just one of those things that they know but they can't do anything unless he messes up. Because while they know, they can't yet prove that they know.
Anyway, I'd be happy to answer any questions or address anything about the case. I don't know much more than you guys. I was told the same story about the doughtnuts and boyscouts. I remember my dad told us he was going on a boyscout trip for the weekend with our Uncle. It's definitely within my dad's character to get doughnuts for the kids... he LOVED kids. I work with kids to this day and I love them dearly and sincerely and I recognize when I'm treating my students with the same love and excitement that my dad treated me with.
But, we also had incredibly broken home (as you could tell from previous comments) and no one is perfect (except God), and after our dad died our lives plummeted into the deepest depths of hell. So, looking back, I tend to believe the story as published, but of course I have real world doubts, being a mortal sinner myself. So I like this thread because, yeah some of theories are absurd, but it's very flattering that people are even thinking about my dad. And someone might have a great idea that adds new insight into it. My brothers and I were sleeping when he came home after being shot. We slept right through it. So, I don't have the full picture. I know Jesus said everything will be brought to the light, so I'll be curious to see if the story we got was true.
Thanks again for letting me share all this. Hope it's helpful!
norty840 11-22-2023, 07:06 PM Was your dad saved ? Was he a true Christian then?!
I do not know. I am hopeful, and I am inclined to believe so. But I also recognize that there are plenty of people who honor Jesus with their lips, but their hearts are far from him. I also recognize that Jesus said that not everyone who calls him Lord will enter the kingdom of heaven. It's not about saying we know him, it's about actually knowing him. To know him is to love him. I know my dad would say he was a believer, but I don't have a clear enough picture to know with any certainty whether or not he actually did love and trust in Jesus.
And of course there's the reality, too, that he could've sincerely known Jesus at some point in his life, but then departed from Jesus. There's also the chance that my dad received him before he went into the operating room.
I say all this to say, I have good hope and sound reason to believe he probably was a sincere believer, but I don't really know, of course.

Yes let's hope he did. My mom died 2 mo ago from her 2nd cancer. She thought when u die u die, and that's it. Lights out! Sadly. Evil sucks.
norty840 11-22-2023, 08:52 PM I'm so sorry to hear about your mom. You know what though, even though she said one thing, you never know what was going on in her heart, right? Especially in the last moments of her life. Love hopes all things, so, I think there's good reason to hope that she may have received Christ before her passing.
Yeah, evil totally sucks! But I'm glad God bears with it so that everyone who will come to him to be saved has a chance to come to him. Like if Jesus returned 10 years ago, I would've been in the Lake of Fire. So, I'm happy that God is longsuffering, not willing that any should perish. He's putting up the evil for as long as he needs to in order to make sure everyone who will ever use their free will to come to him (through Jesus) comes to him. I hope that makes sense.
DALLASTEXAN!! 11-23-2023, 11:22 PM norty840, thank you for posting and sharing about your family. This was always such a chilling segment for me. and to this day it's hard for me to watch the segment because it is one of those things that feels like it could happen to anyone. I never suspected that there was another element to the shooting other than the way it was presented. It is interesting that you say the police knew who did it. Are there any other details that you are aware of that could shed light on this? Is there still hope of this being solved or could someone be Id'd or charged?
DALLASTEXAN!! 11-23-2023, 11:59 PM Here in L.A. we recently had a guy who got out of his vehicle on multiple occasions to attack other drivers (usually by striking their vehicles with a pipe).
It will likely take a confession or anyone the attackers confessed to coming forward to ever solve these cases.
wow, that's crazy. you are right about the dash cams. and good point about David's case being difficult to solve because of the era that it happened in. for that reason I think it makes perfect sense that his instinct was to drive back home to get help. If we fast forward to something like that happening today, it makes me wonder that if David had a cell phone, he could have recorded a video or at the very least called 911 from the location and maybe the dispatch could have helped him collect some details for authorities to get a quicker investigation going.
norty840 11-24-2023, 07:10 PM Dallas,
No problem. It's my pleasure. Thank you for even thinking about my dad's case.
So what I have been told by my family is that:
a) My mom knows the name of the guy who did it.
b) My older brother knows the name of the guy who did it, because my mom told him.
c) I was told his name at some point by either my brother or my mom, but I don't remember what his name was (again... Jesus saved me 6 years ago... I've been healed from this, and when I do think of the incident, I just pray that my dad was a sincere believer, and I pray that the guy who killed him finds the Lord as well. So, I'm not super invested anymore)
d) I was told by my mom that the police also know who it is, but they don't have enough evidence to convict. So, my mom knows who did it, my older brother knows who did it, the police know who did it, but there's not enough evidence to convict. I'm sure I could call or visit the police station and get all of the information myself, which I may do someday.
As far as other details or anything I can shed light on.... A couple things I see being talked about that I want to add my two cents to...
- RT 22, where my dad was shot, is not a "country road" as someone said. It's a 4 lane highway. That being said, at 3am it's going to be pretty empty.
- I understand why my dad drove home instead of to the hospital. I was in love once, I was almost married. I know that at that time, if I would've been shot and I had the chance, the first thing I would've done is gotten to my fiancé to let her know. Our house was closer to where he got shot than the nearest hospital was. It was 1992. It's as simple as "oh man, I got to go tell my wife!"
- I do not know why my dad left at 1:30 in the morning. He and my uncle were supposed to be at St. John's in Plum Boro at 5 am. So maybe he planned on getting up at 330-4 anyway, couldn't sleep, and then just figured, "whatever I'll go get doughnuts for the kids and kill some time before we have to meet." Again, the way that UM tells the story is exactly the same story that we got from our mom.
The ONLY reason that I reserve a place for skepticism is because of our family's history of keeping secrets. So, with that in mind, if I had to guess.. I would say there's a 50/50 chance the UM story is total truth. If I ever talk to the police myself and look into the case with them, I'll let the board know.
Hope that all helps!

thank you for the reply. I appreciate you being willing to discuss this with all of us. I would have wanted to see my loved ones asap if something like that happened to me as well. and going back to 1992, I remember those days. although I was a small kid back then, it was so much different in the days before internet, phones, and cameras being everywhere. so I don't find anything that was told by UM to be unbelievable. god bless!

You're welcome. My pleasure, again!
Yeah, exactly, I agree. Like I said, the only reason I reserve skepticism is because I know my family's history of lying/keeping secrets, and also because I know the sin nature of human beings. So I do not completely rule out that the UM episode was a fabrication, but I'm willing to just find out at the end of time when all things are revealed by Christ.
Thank you, and God bless you as well!

there are people in this thread, I think maybe that knew him or knew more about him, that suggested he wasn't telling the truth. and other reg posters as well. I stuck up for him because I thought his story was believable when you factor his upcoming Scout trip. But lately I've been rethinking it more. he did give details about the Honda prelude and I still wonder why that got cut from the new segments. what is strange is in Dexter Stefonek's case people have also alleged that he was killed over an affair and that suspect Truck was cut out of the new segment as well. just a weird coincidence that my ADHD brain connects with. it's very likely the truck was the murderer's vehicle.
Rayroy 03-14-2026, 06:43 PM You're assuming that everything David told everyone was true.
Not to upset anyone here, but here is what I think happened to David.
Rayroy 03-14-2026, 06:49 PM The gun could have been stolen. The car could have been stolen. David maybe was not really going out for doughnuts. You don't know the exact details and you don't know what is fact or fiction.
I saw this case for the first time today.
1990 UM fan 03-14-2026, 07:21 PM You're assuming that everything David told everyone was true.
Yet you are doing the same thing: assuming. Why dig up something from 5 years ago?
Rayroy 03-14-2026, 07:46 PM You finally awoke. There are too many questions to the story. When that happens, the story is false. The police officer was letting everyone know he was suspicious by saying it without coming out and saying it by saying he was really calm. Most of the people who are hiding something would be calm during that point. Normally people are in shock. You don't know what he was saying was true or false and you have no idea if his widow was telling the truth. Everyone is a liar.
The real question is, how far did his brother live? Where was this place that had doughnuts?
It's doughnuts by the way. Dunkin' Donuts made everyone forget how to write the word.
